AIMS:
The Indian Journal of Canine Practice has been started to streamline the Pet Practice in
India. Since the Dog & Cat Practice, which has become one of prime importance in veterinary
profession and also has gained momentum, as there was an emergent need to form a
technical forum, which can deal all the subjects on a single platform. The need for
practitioners to obtain relevant information and skill is one of the primary concerns of IJCP.
The aims of the Indian Journal of Canine Practice are to increase the Veterinary
community's understanding of Pet Practice needs in Indian Scenario and varied roles
to be played by Veterinarians, to provide them an opportunity to gain insight into
current issues in Veterinary medicine as well as the public health prospective and to
provide a forum for discussion on ways to increase partnerships between the Medical
and Veterinary communities, and researchers to meet the critical public health needs
and canine health perspective also.
Increasing Pet Animal - human contact over last few decades in the country for a number
of positive aspects of companion animal, demand for the awareness of health hazards to
human society. The Veterinarians have to play an important role in this regard through social
education by various means. There are about > 18 million dogs in the country and a large
number of true zoonoses affect these companion animals including Viral, Bacterial,
Rickettsial, Parasitic and Fungal origin. All type of Anthropo zoonoses viz. Directozoonoses,
Cyclozoonosis, Metazoonosis and Saprozoonosis are reported from pet animals to man.
Zooanthroponosis like canine T.B., also occur. The dog may even act as sentinel animal for
man for zoonotic diseases like R. rickcttsii and E. canis infection.
The aims of IJCP are to advance Pet Practice through enhancement of knowledge
and skill of Veterinarians so that they can remain on the “Cutting edge” of their
profession and continue to provide a quality service to their clients. The need for
practitioners to obtain relevant information and skill is one of the primary concerns of
IJCP.
SCOPE:
As you are aware that the dogs are not only the pet animal but they are a family member,
a friend and sometimes a loyal companion. Among the canines, dogs serve the humanity in
many ways. They are in fact the oldest friends of man and have provided an exemplary
companionship since time immemorial. Their help to handicapped persons is well
documented. Besides companionship, their role in providing transportation, food material,
hunting, tracking, sporting, guarding, security, crime investigation, scavengers, sniffers
defence services and as animal models greatly facilitated new therapies for human ailments.
These animals also played a significant role in the field of Medicine and in relief work during
man made calamities. Their pivotal role in the security of Public, VIPs and more ever for
National Security besides the criminal investigation is highly laudable. The Bomb disposal
dog squad, VIP security Dog Squad, Border Security Force Dog Squad, The Army Dog
Squads, The I.T.B.P. Dog Squad, The S.S.S.B. Dog Squad, The Railway Protection Force
Dog Squads and CB CID Dog Squads are the exemplary. In Indian Army the Dogs are benig
used for Patrolling and Mine detecting in border areas and also scvanging in Leh-Ladakh
area for Army men in snow calamities. A pet dog is an inseparable part of the family and as a
result, the human - dog companionship is much stronger than any other bondage. In the fast
paced life of the India, the pet dogs are a source of tension relief and amusement. The
increasing hectic activities of life are forcing more and more to resort for pet keeping
particularly canines. Scientifically also, it has been proved that the dog owners get a better
choice to relax and extending emotional attachment towards their pets as compared to those
who do not owe a pet. Medical recommendations are also emerging that if a patient, who is
suffering from hypertension and emotional stress, get relief by keeping a pet. The services
provided by the pets to the mankind world over are issues related to utility of pets for the care
of geriatrics and disabled individuals. Dogs have a special place as watchdogs and their
hypersensitive olfactory sense is used by police in crime detection. Dogs were used
sucessesfully for Narcotics haul in Chandigarh (India), arrest of dreaded terrorist “Osamabin
Laden” in Pakistan. The value of dogs in natural disaster management has also been well
recognized. In India, it is of common knowledge that Sniffer dogs were pressed into service
from countries like France to locate people buried under the rubble following the
unprecedented earthquake in Latur and Kutch; recently in Nepal also. The human can
deceive but they never do so i.e. their faithfulness and loyalty has no comparison. In one or
other way they have become part and partial of human life.
Animal Assisted Therapy is the curative or therapeutic aspect of Veterinary Public
Health and is an unconventional entity in Veterinary Public Health to explore the wonders of
animal human relationship for overcoming many physical, mental and social obstacle of man
through cathexis.
The increasing pet association with man in past few decades has drawn the veterinary
concern on its well-being and disease free status. There is need to provide direction for
improvement of companion Animal’s Health and Zoonosis vis-à-vis Human Health;
particularly Rabies menace. Health of a dog is not only a concern for itself but also for the
owner and human society world over, as a large number of diseases particularly infections
and parasitic in nature, are communicable to man, both Directo- and Metazoonoses.
Therefore, there is a growing need for expert services in canine management and
health and their zoonotic importance; the Veterinarians have to shoulder a big responsibility.
It is being taken care of by Indian Society for Advancement of Canine Practice, one of the
Apex Technical Forum has been formed to streamline the Canine Practice in India. ISACP is
disseminating the latest technology and knowledge through its Journal “Indian Journal of
Canine Practice” in Indian Scenario. |
