EFECTOS DE UN INUSUAL PERÍODO DE ALTA FRECUENCIA DE HURACANES SOBRE EL BENTOS DE ARRECIFES CORALINOS | Author : Pedro M. Alcolado, Darlenys Hernández-Muñoz, Hansel Caballero, Linnet Busutil, Susana Perera y Gema Hidalgo | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :In coral reefs of southwestern Cuba, we assessed the impacts from unprecedented frequent and intense hurricanes during the period 2001-2007, and from coral diseases, which are both factors considered to be associated with climate change.. At the reef crests, live hard coral cover reduction varied from null to 21%, while maximum average coral diameter reduction varied from 16 to 40 cm. In the fore-reefs, the reduction of coral cover varied from null to 14%, while diameter reduction varied from null to 26 cm. However, at all sites, great shifts in species dominance patterns were observed. In reef crests, numerical dominance of Acropora palmata and other hard corals shifted towards increases of Millepora complanata or, to a lesser extent, of Porites astreoides or Acropora prolifera. At the fore-reefs, the shifts occurred from the dominance of Montastraea annularis complex, Diploria strigosa and Agaricia agaricites, towards combined increases of P. astreoides or Siderastrea siderea. With those ongoing changes, reef crests are losing effectiveness as refuges and wave dissipators because of reduction of structural complexity. The population density of the sea-urchin Diadema antillarum remained negligible and unchanged in the southern Gulf of Batabanó, while it increased significantly at the Faro Cazones reef crest. Percentages of recent mortality and percentages of disease incidence in corals remained low, suggesting a dominant influence from hurricanes on assessed coral reef decline. |
| EVALUACIÓN DE LAS ASOCIACIONES DE PECES DE LOS ARRECIFES CORALINOS DEL CENTRO INTERNACIONAL DE BUCEO MARÍA LA GORDA, PARQUE NACIONAL GUANAHACABIBES, CUBA | Author : Dorka Cobián Rojas y Pedro Pablo Chevalier Monteagudo | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Recreational SCUBA diving on the coral reefs is one of the few activities allowed in the area managed by the Centro Internacional de Buceo María la Gorda at the Guanahacabibes National Park. The composition and structure of fish associations were evaluated on the reefs visited by users of the diving center. To assess possible seasonal changes in fish community densities and composition surveys were carried during the dry and rainy seasons. Visual censuses were carried out at eight diving sites comprising two characteristic reef biotopes. Indices for diversity, evenness, species richness, density, and fish biomass were estimated. Mean density values by sampling site did not show significant differences between seasons. A total of 134 species were recorded in the area. Fish abundances were greater in sites of higher structural complexity, matching areas of ridges on the reef slope. Prevalence of small-sized fish and a general poor presence of medium to high-sized fish were observed. Fish families with the higher densities were Pomacentridae and Labridae, and those with the higher biomass were Lutjanidae and Labridae. The trophic structure was dominated by phytophagous and omnivorous fish. Medium-sized carnivorous fish were observed, however, their densities were much lower than for the rest of the trophic groups, which could be a consequence of illegal fishing activities. |
| EVALUACIÓN DE LOS RIESGOS DE AFECTACIÓN POR EL ESTABLECIMIENTO DE GRANJAS ATUNERAS EN RELACIÓN CON LA DISTRIBUCIÓN ESPACIAL DE CETÁCEOS EN EL GOLFO DULCE, COSTA RICA | Author : Lenin E. Oviedo Correa, Juan Diego Pacheco y David Herra Miranda | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This contribution deals with the spatial distribution of marine top predators, particularly odontocete and migratory misticete cetaceans. The study describes the potential risk of disturbances due to the establishment of mariculture operations and corresponding infrastructure: tuna feed lots. Through a mixed theoretical and empirical approach, this research corroborates how the maximum depth, a limiting factor in the definition of cetacean trophic niches off the study area, overlaps with the values for depths from an area proposed as the focal location of a tuna feed lot facility. The latter implies two particular scenarios: the translocation of the local predator population from a potential foraging habitat-niche, and the progressive negative interaction between predators and the accompanying fish fauna around of the cages, with a high probability of incidental capture of those predators by entanglement. Additionally, the occurrence of humpback whales during the rainy season associated with a migratory route from feeding grounds off Chile-Antarctica, that would pass through the area projected to harbor the mariculture operation. The results illustrate the need of considering a precautionary approach and relocate mariculture projects to areas of lesser value in terms of marine biodiversity. |
| CARACTERÍSTICAS HIDROGRÁFICAS DEL SISTEMA LAGUNAR LOS MICOS-QUEMADA EN EL CARIBE HONDUREÑO | Author : Carlos L. Brenes Rodríguez, Rosario Benavides Morera y Daniel Ballestero | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :A hydrographic survey funded by PREPAC (Plan Regional de Pesca y Acuicultura Continental) was carried out in the Micos-Quemada lagoon system in the Caribbean coast of Honduras. From October 2005 to May 2006 27 sampling stations were occupied to measure pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and turbidity. Surface temperatures were between 24.2 and 31.8°C during the sampling period, with extreme temporal variations close to 7°C. Minimum temperatures were observed between October and February. Surface salinity showed a clear seasonal cycle, with values greater than 12 during the dry months virtually over the entire body of water, while during the rainy season (October to February) salinity values were around 6. Values for pH were between 7.8 and 8.7 during the study. The highest pH values were found in the central area of the lagoon system and the lowest in the areas close to the banks, likely due to the degradation of organic matter and to the contribution from the tributary. Maximum turbidity was observed in February and December, while the area with clearest water was located near the bar. Surface oxygen concentration varied between 5.0 and 7.6 mg/L from October to February. Maximum and minimum values of dissolved oxygen were observed in October and May, respectively. |
| PATTERNS OF PREY BIOMASS CONSUMPTION BY SMALL ODONTOCETES IN THE NORTHEASTERN COAST OF VENEZUELA | Author : Lenin E. Oviedo Correa | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Trophic relationships are conditioned by population dynamics of interacting species in the community (species present, food web connections among them, and the strength of interactions), and on the consequences of these species interactions depend various ecosystem processes such as productivity and nutrient flux. Odontocetes target a wide range of prey items and are adapted to feeding at different depths. The aim of this report is to describe the patterns of prey consumption by small odontocetes, incorporating natural predatory patterns into a potential management scheme of strategic food sources, for both human and marine predators. Using the geo-statistical analysis tool of ArcGIS 9.2, maps illustrating the intensity and location of prey consumption were made for species with a sighting index (SPUE) > 0.15. The biomass consumption emphasized the differences in habitat use by species. The trends in distribution of prey biomass removal by odontocetes particularly suggest a stratification of prey consumption primarily in shelf waters, with a prey biomass that is comprised basically by demersal fish and small pelagics (including Sardinella aurita), and into transition-oceanic depths where most of the predatory pattern would potentially rely on pelagic - mesopelagic squid and myctophids. Overall the spatial tendencies in regionalization presented in this contribution will serve as a base-line to assess ecosystem health and evaluate management scenarios. |
| ESTRATEGIA DE MANEJO DE LOS RECURSOS MARINOS Y COSTEROS EN ISLA UVITA, LIMÓN, COSTA RICA | Author : José Pereira Chaves y Luis Sierra Sierra | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is known for its marine resource diversity, and is where the Uvita Island Insular System is located. This site was declared a National Monument in 1985, and chosen as the site for the present study, which had the main objective of offering an adequate managing tool to perform several conservation and sustainable development actions on the Island, to promote the coordination and participation of all stakeholders. The study clearly identified the need for developing a management strategy to promote pertinent conservation actions at the site, to strengthen not only its particular diversity, but also to establish educational and scientific regulations to encourage the adequate conditions for the sustainable development of the Island. Currently, the Island faces conservation and management problems due to the lack of an administrator to control and regulate the use of the site. In order to learn about the perception of the local people, a survey type questionnaire was administered and a workshop held at the site. Based on the results of the survey, the majority of the local people thought that the Island activities should be regulated and vigilance controls established. It was also well recognized that government institutions, such as MINAE and JAPDEVA, should manage the site with the support of the local government, which should acquire a commitment towards conservation. ºThe study proposed a management strategy for the Island, placing emphasis on six lines of action: institutional organization, protection, zoning, education and training, monitoring, and research and recreation. |

| ESTRUCTURA POBLACIONAL DE DONAX STRIATUS (BIVALVIA, DONACIDAE) EN PLAYA LAS BALSAS, GIBARA, CUBA | Author : Frank A. Ocaña Borrego, Alejandro Fernández, Alexis Silva, Pedro A. González, Yamilet García | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Donax striatus Linné 1767 is one of the two beach clam species that inhabits in the Caribbean. Few investigations have focused on describing aspects related with the population structure of this species. A population of D. striatus was surveyed from February 2008 to January 2009 in Las Balsas beach, Gibara, Cuba. The population showed seasonal fluctuations of the density presenting the higher values on May and October 2008 and January 2009. There were peaks of recruitment: April-May, August 2008 and January 2009. A stratified distribution by size classes was observed: recruits were found in the higher strata of the beach while adults occur mainly in the lowest strata. The higher abundance was found in the middle strata. There was no correlation between monthly changes in density and temperatures, nor with the rainfall however, changes in the normal wave’s regimen and mid sea level rise seems to have some influence over the behaviour of this species abundance. A hypothesis that combines morphodynamics parameters to explain the across shore distribution of the components of the population, is proposed. |
| CARACTERIZACIÓN DE LA PESCA DEL TIBURÓN MARTILLO, SPHYRNA LEWINI, EN LA PARTE EXTERNA DEL GOLFO DE NICOYA, COSTA RICA | Author : Ilena Zanella, Andrés López y Rándall Arauz | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) is one of the shark species most impacted by overfishing, and is currently listed by the IUCN Red List as an Endangered. This research sought to characterize the distribution of S. lewini in the external area of Gulf of Nicoya, central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, based on observations from a coastal artisanal fishery. From March 2006 to May 2007, we analyzed scalloped hammerhead shark landings by members of the Tarcoles Artisanal Fishermen's Cooperative (CoopeTárcoles R. L.), who operate in the outer part of the Gulf of Nicoya. We measured the total length of each shark, recorded the reported location of capture, and the gear used. In total, we recorded data for 273 sharks landed. We determined that total length holds a positive linear relationship with the depth of the fishing area (R2 = 0.4296, *** p <.0001) as well as with the distance from the mouth of the Tárcoles River (R2 = 0.4052, *** p <.0001). The smaller sharks (pups) were caught in a fishing site known as Peñon, slightly north of the mouth of the Tarcoles River, where the waters are shallow, turbid and highly productive, providing food and shelter for the pups. As pups mature and attain larger sizes, they move towards deeper waters away from the Tarcoles River, out of the Gulf of Nicoya. We identify Peñon as a primary nursery for scalloped hammerhead sharks, and recommend management actions that seek to reduce fishing effort between March and May, when pups are born. |

| SENDEROS SUBMARINOS DEL PARQUE NACIONAL CAHUITA: DESCRIPCIÓN BIOLÓGICA | Author : Gerardo E. Palacios Martínez | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This survey provides biological information regarding the underwater trails of Cahuita National Park, and identifies the most common species present. The biological description of the flora and fauna are based on line transects and direct observation. The Perezoso underwater trail had 40% live coral cover, of which the Lobe coral (Siderastrea siderea) was the most common; the most common species of fish belonged to the family Pomacentridae. The long spined sea urchin (Diadema antillarum) was the most common among the invertebrates, and the algae recorded belonged to the genera Dictyota and Halimeda. The coral species Siderastrea siderea and Agaricia agaricites were the most common corals of the Perezoso and Eduardo underwater trails. |

We observed 415 fishing operations (bottom line, gillnet and ray line): 340 dock landing observations and 75 (18.1%) on board observations. During the landing observations, we analyzed 3299 sharks and rays: the brown smooth hound (Mustelus henlei) was the most common species (63.7%), followed by the common smooth hound (Mustelus lunulatus) (16.7%), the Pacific sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon longurio) (6.9%) and the scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) (6.1%). The longtail stingray (Dasyatis longa) and the whitenose shark (Nasolamia velox) represented the 3.5% and 2.6% of the total catch, respectively. During 75 fishing trips, we analyzed 6.458 fish individuals, of them only 4.4% (240 individuals) were sharks and longtail stingrays. Among these, M. henlei was also the most abundant species (50.4%), followed by R. longurio (21.7%), D. longa (13.8%), N. velox (5.8%), S. lewini (5.8%), and M. lunulatus (2.5%). Considering the seasonality and abundance of smooth hound sharks in Herradura, we recommend a technical closure during the higher catch months (January-February and September-October). Also, we recommend protecting the Peñón, which is inhabited by adults of longtail stingray and juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks. |

| VARIACIÓN ESPACIAL EN COMUNIDADES DE ESPONJAS DE LA COSTA ORIENTAL DE BAHÍA DE COCHINOS, CUBA | Author : Hansel Caballero, Linnet Busutil, Yanel García y Pedro M. Alcolado | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The sponge communities at four locations on the east coast of Bahía de Cochinos were surveyed in October 2002. At each location, sampling sites were established in the ecological zones of patch reef (3 m), shallow terrace (6-10 m), and deep terrace (15 m). The line-transect method with a 10 m line as sampling unit was used to measure sponge bottom coverage, and a 1 m square grid was used to quantify sponge community density. Species heterogeneity and species richness indices showed variability among sites and tended to increase with depth. Thirty species belonging to 19 families and 21 genera were found. The most common species were Mycale laevis, Aplysina cauliformis, Cliona aprica, Aplysina fistularis, and Ectyoplasia ferox, which comprised 48% of the total individuals identified. Sponge density was moderate (2-8 specimens/m2) and showed variation among sites. The nearest station to open sea showed a lower density value, possibly due to disturbance from the passage of a hurricane in 2001. The general condition of the community was good, based on the diversity values reached and the predominant species, although evidence of impacts from recent hurricane were observed. |
| ACUICULTURA DE PARGO LA MANCHA LUTJANUS GUTTATUS (STEINDACHNER, 1869) EN COSTA RICA DENTRO DE UN ENFOQUE ECOSISTÉMICO | Author : Ángel Herrera-Ulloa, Jonathan Chacón-Guzmán, Gerando Zúñiga-Calero, Óscar Fajardo y Ricardo Jiménez-Montealegre | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Overfishing and the search for alternatives to it, led us to the explore mariculture as an option using an ecosystem-based approach through two parallel processes: an in-laboratory research strategy for larval rearing of tropical marine fish, and a strategy of co-management to develop tropical marine fish aquaculture. The spotted rose snapper shows great potential for larvae production and cage culture. This species showed no responses to hormone induction; however, the set up of a suitable environment allowed frequent, high-quality spontaneous spawnings. The larval rearing phase presented problems due to the small size of the larvae; although, management in appropriate tanks and the use of enrichments improved the processes, increasing the production of juveniles. This ecosystem approach allowed the operation of a profitable farm pilot project with a productive approach, but with rural tourism in mind as well. |
