Migration and Sense of Home and Homelessness in the Novels of Rohinton Mistry |
Author : KULDIP AWASTHI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Rohinton Mistry is an Indo Canadian novelist who was born
in Mumbai but at present he resides in Canada. As he belongs to the Parsi community, his ancestors originally belonged to Iran who migrated from Iran to India at that time. The same is the reason as to why Rohinton Mistry feels a double sense of migration, as his ancestors migrated to India and he migrated from India to Canada. This took the form of diasporic concept or in other words identity crisis in his novels like A Fine Balance and Family Matters. In A Fine Balance, the story of Ishvar and Omprakash deals with their identity crisis as they are considered to be untouchable because of belonging to ‘chamaar’
aste. In order to break away from the shackles of ntouchability, they both learn the art of a Muslim tailor. Other than this, in Family Matters the story of a family of Parsi origin has been portrayed by Mistry who faces a great deal of crisis at the domestic level. The story revolves around a character named Nariman, a widower, who faces the rudeness of his step son Coomy after being sick. Soon Roxana, his real daughter takes him to her house though she faces a lot of economic
crisis because of this. This paper aims at analyzing the struggles of migration and family conflicts in Mistry’s novels.

Author : DIPAK BARUAH |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Water which is one of the basic resources on the earth acts as
the means of sustenance and factor of development of all living
organisms in the biosphere. Such a kind of elixir of life occurs in the surface, underground and atmosphere. The drainage basin being a source of water resource base provides availability and scope for easy supply of water for various uses. The yield of surface water in terms of water discharge caused by rainfall within a drainage basin plays an important role in the sustainable planning and management. A proper assessment and evaluation of these two surface water bases shall lead one to better understand the yield, frequency variation, seasonality and dependence as well amount of rainfall as the causal factors of these resources on one hand and budget of the water discharge on the other.
The present paper attempts to evaluate the status of seasonal yield, dependence and variability of water discharge as well as rainfall in and around Barnadi River basin located in the middle part of the northern bank of Brahmaputra River in Assam. The analysis of this paper reveals that the seasonal yield of peak discharges of Barnadi river for the period of 1991-2010 are that 352.14 cumecs in autumn, 1157.92 in pre-monsoon, 2811.95 in monsoon and 870.84 cumecs in post- monsoon seasons. The frequency variation of rainfall particularly during monsoon season in the duration of 1978 – 2003 indicates a negative trend amounting 1439.42 mm and 1258.38 mm in 1978 and 2003. |

Outpost Communication Signal Reduction due to Ionospheric Plasma Turbulence |
Author : Khusro Mian, S. Zeeshan Abbas, Fayyaz Ur Rasheed, Alay Raza, Sheikh M. Zeeshan Iqbal, Fizza Abbas |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Attenuation of satellite communication signal by upper atmospheric plasma turbulence is of concern at higher signal
frequencies. The molecular species such as are molecular oxygen, O2 and water vapor (H2O) are responsible for attenuation each of these molecules has its own set of frequencies where certain intermolecular resonances are excited. For satellite communication, the most important frequencies for resonance absorption are at 22 GHz in water
vapor and 60 GHz in molecular Oxygen. The diversion of HF and some intermediate wave radio signals to Earth via the ionosphere gives increase to global HF radio transportations. This phenomenon becomes vital throughout sunshine hours, and for a little bit after sundown when the upper atmosphere is ionized. |

Author : MOHAMED H. A. ELKANZI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Over the last several decades there has been increasing concern about the global environment and the effect of human perturbations on it. This whole area has become known as global change, involving a wide range of scientific disciplines.
Given the increase in concentrations of greenhouse gases that
has occurred and is predicted to continue, the change in radioactive heating of the troposphere can be calculated.
Models generally predict an increase in tropospheric
temperatures. Doubling of CO2 and CH4 concentrations in the
mesosphere (50km-80km above sea level) and at the lower boundary of the thermosphere, which extends from approximately 90km upward. Using sophisticated atmospheric general circulation models, they predict that the stratosphere (extending from -15 to 50KM) mesosphere, and thermosphere will show significant cooling.

The Dynamics of Female Friendship: A Reading of Divakaruni’s Sister of My Heart |
Author : APARUPA MOOKHERJEE |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Sisterhood, which is defined as an intimate and nurturing
asexual relationship between women, is an emerging motif in the fiction of contemporary Asian American women writers. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, a Post colonial diasporic writer of Indian origin also forms a part of this literary tradition as she herself confirms in an essay, “. . . I find myself focusing my writing on friendships with women, and trying to balance them with the conflicting passions and demands that come to us as daughters and wives, lovers and mothers.” Literary portrayals of female friendship show that friendship that extends to solidarity goes a long way in providing healing, security and
empowerment to women. In fact sisterhood as a feminist strategy of going beyond patriarchy has already been widely explored in AfroAmerican women’s writing. |

Author : Ikram Hussain, Syed Anayat Hussain, Fuzail Ahmad |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Improving the serve speed is most important for competitive
tennis players. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of body kinematics on ball velocity, thereby to propose possible suggestions to improve serving skill. Body kinematics of four Indian international players, who participated in Davis cup held at Indore, India having mean age (years), height (cm) and weight (kg) of 27.00±4.97, 186.50±6.03 and 81.25±7.41, respectively were investigated. The tennis serve was divided into three phases: (I) preparatory phase, (II) force-generation phase, and (III) follow-through phase. The recorded data of service motion was analyzed using appropriate motion analysis software and statistical analysis was done
by using SPSSv 17. The mean, standard deviation (SD) and
correlation coefficient (r) were determined to find out any relationship between the selected kinematic variables and ball velocity. It was shown that, during phase I, wrist angular velocity (r= 0.50), during phase II, wrist velocity (r= 0.52), shoulder velocity (r= 0.45), elbow angular velocity (r= 0.43), elbow angular acceleration (r= 0.45) and during phase III, racket velocity at impact (r= 0.53), elbow angular acceleration (r= 0.44) were significantly correlated with ball velocity. Players therefore should concentrate on increasing the extension
velocities of these identified joints during training. |

this system terminology is disentangled. It is an indisputable
fact that the spiritual world of the Albanians as well as the
material world during the 20 last years is enriched immensely. |

Modeling leadership effectiveness among higher educational institutions using PLS-SEM |
Author : SHIRLEY D. GALICIA-DECHAVEZ |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The aim of this research is two-fold: (a) to identify the causal
relationship of the leader’s CSEs on the followers’ OC, and (b) to develop a theory that will predict the followers’ OC endogenous latent construct by maximizing the constructs of the leader’s CSEs, transformational leadership [TFL], and ethical leadership [EL] using partial least squares approach to structural equation modeling [PLSSEM]. Data were collected from 11 higher educational institutions [HEIs]. With 883 and 88 valid responses, thus, achieving a response rate of 57.05% from the followers and the leaders, respectively, a model
of leadership effectiveness among HEIs through OC was established grounded on PLS-SEM. This model emanated from the leader specific traits in the context of CSEs and the trickle-down effect of leadership effectiveness through the followers’ response in the context of OC. |

Autonomy in Higher Education: Shifting Paradigm |
Author : Ramesh Chandra Singh, Siddharth Lohani, Pankaj Pant |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This article is related with paradigm shift of Indian higher
education system last few years. Autonomy was an important issue in higher education since independence in India but now it is shifting to another level. In the present time autonomy significantly relates with the matter of accountability. The present article is just an effort to understand autonomy in the relation of accountability and the importance of autonomy in higher education in present scenario. The issues of academic freedom and university autonomy have re-emerged on the agenda in the last few years First of all, there is the spiraling
increase in the number of students since the end of the Second World War with, as its corollary, the explosion in most countries whatever their political or social system of the number of higher education institutions, a phenomenon that has gained momentum over the years. Although the state retains control of higher education a wide range of accountability mechanisms (such as performance contracts and the
introduction of a system for assessments of research production), it is evident that universities have gained more institutional autonomy. The apparent shift from individual to institutional autonomy provides more flexibility for universities to set strategic objectives. At the same time, universities ecome more open to societal demands. |

Art Scenario in Europe at the End of the Second World War |
Author : Parveen Sultana |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The situation that existed in Europe at the end of the Second
World War can be estimated by contrasting the achievements of the later two decades. The first of these decades is the one—the years 1939- 48. The other is chosen more arbitrarily, but it too includes world warI, the years 1914-18. In the earlier decade art was everywhere in a ferment. In France the post-impressionist movement was developing the more explicit phases known as Fauvism and Cubism. In Italy there
was the Futurism of Marinetti and Severini, and the Metaphysical school of Chirico and Carra. Dadaism was born in Zurich and was evolved into Surrealism in France and Germany. In Germany and Scan- dinavia the Expressionist school came into existence; in Russia Malevich, Gabo, Pevsner and Tatlin launched the suprematist movement, to develop after the Revolution into Constructivism; in Holland Moridrian and Van Doesburg were establishing the inovement known as Neo-plasticism; even England had a new movement—the Vorticism of Wyndham Lewis. Let us ask rather what survives from the couple of agitated decades. |

Abstract :Morbidity and mortality rate is high in ICU patients. Various
scoring system is used like APACHE-II, SAPS-II, SOFA score to
predict outcome of ICU patients and helps physicians for patient
admission and management. APACHE-II score are used in our
country. APACHE-II, SAPS-II, SOFA score contain multiple variable, which are expensive, time consuming, where as RDW is cheaper, rapidly and easily test. The study was cross sectional conducted to assess the RDW as a marker for severity of disease among critically ill patients in ICU. Study population was 60 patients selected from intensive care according to inclusion criteria. Suspected case of ICU and adult age group were included in the study. After taking informed written consent from patient’s attendant blood sample were obtained with all aseptic precaution from all patients and processed in
hematology auto analyzer (cell counter). Among the more severely ill patients half were >60 years age group (50.0%). On the other hand among the less severely ill patients majority were 31 to 60 years age group (65.6%). RDW ranged from 14.70 to 23.00 and the mean APACHE-II score was ranged from 15.0 to 32.0. The higher tertile of RDW were observed in older critical ill patients in ICU. The primary finding of this study showed that increasing RDW levels can serve as a
marker to assess the severity of ICU patients. This association
remained significant even after adjustment for APACHE-II score. RDW is less expensive and common measurement found on the complete blood count. The RDW fared better than APACHE II for morbidity or mortality prediction of ICU patients. RDW is widely available test, no additional cost and found in routinely performed with complete blood cell count and is highly reproducible, RDW has the potentially clinical utility to predict outcome for ICU patients. |

A novel feather degrading Acinetobacter sp. PD 12 isolated from feather waste dumping site in Mumbai |
Author : Malay Shah, R. B. Vaidya |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Current methods of feather waste disposal include land filling,
incineration or conversion to feather meal by steam pressure cooking. These methods require high-energy input and/or cause problems in storage, handling, emissions control and ash disposal. Discarded feather also causes various human ailments including chlorosis, mycoplasmosis and fowl cholera. Biodegradation of feathers using keratinolytic microorganisms represents an efficient alternative way to manage feather waste that could be coupled with production of valuable products such as protein hydrolysates and proteolytic enzymes. A new feather degrading bacterium was isolated from a local feather waste dumping site and identified as Acinetobacter sp. PD 12
based on 16S rDNA phylogenetic analysis. Aerobic cultivation of the isolate in minimal medium containing feathers at 320C for 6 days resulted in 70 % degradation of intact feathers. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed degradation of feathers by keratinase. |

Author : Hamid Majeed, Hafiz Rizwan Sharif, Junaid Haider, Barkat Ali, Zhong Fang |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Food grade nanoemulsions encapsulating lipophilic components such as essential oils have potential for utilization in beverage and food industries to improve the health benefits of food
products. Eugenol (EU) nanoemulsions were prepared with variable proportion of EU to canola oil (CA), emulsified and stabilized with purity gum ultra (PGU), a newly developed succinylated waxy starch. The nanoemulsion showed decrease in droplet size with increasing EU concentration in the EU:CA mixture. However, prepared nanoemulsions (1:9 –5:5 % EU-CA) showed negligible change after one month storage. The nanoemulsion droplets showed round shape as visualized by using Scanning electron microscope (SEM). On the other
hand, all prepared nanoemulsion showed shear thinning behaviour after one month storage. These results suggest the formation of stable and small droplet size EU loaded nanoemulsions using modified starch as emulsifier. The current study favours the small sized food grade nanoemulsion in different food systems because of their shear thinning ehaviour. |

“Fear of Floating” in Albania and Economic Growth |
Author : BESART KADIA |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This study endeavours to understand the volatility of the
exchange rate in Albania and to see if there are sign of “fear of
floating” present. De jure Albania currently applies a flexible exchange rate regime. Traditionally the main argument in favour of this policy is that monetary policy is not constrained by the predetermined level of the exchange rate. Thus, onetary policy sets interest rates in order to achieve domestic equilibrium (ie. price stability) while the nominal exchange rate adjusts to balance the external accounts. Theoretical evidence concerning the impact of exchange rate stability on growth is
mixed. The theoretical arguments in favour of flexible exchange rates are mainly of macroeconomic nature, as flexible exchange rates allow for an easier adjustment in response to asymmetric country specific real shocks. From a icroeconomic perspective low exchange rate volatility can be associated with lower transaction costs for international trade and capital flows thereby contributing to higher growth.

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :In rural areas where land, water and financial resources are
scarce, livelihood diversification is the key strategy through which farmers try to sustain and improve their well being and gradually farming becomes less important. In this context this study is designed to explore the livelihood diversification and different livelihood strategies perused by small farmers in Kaghan Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used for the purpose of data collection. Results show that in past years people were dependent on the farming to sustain their
livelihood but with the change of time and significantly by climatic variability their livelihood pattern were shifted from farming to labor. Unskilled wage labor is the major cash riented livelihood activity of the households, while remittances and farming is the secondary and tertiary source of income. It is recommended that state machinery have to make investment in the area, strengthen the local institutions to enhance their efficiency in their work to create more livelihood options. |

Neoliberalism and the future of market economy after the world financial crisis in Eastern Europe |
Author : Besart Kadia |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The main hypothesis is whether the recession that followed the
financial crisis of 2008 has led to a paradigm shift, by which we mean a substantial shift to the way people think about the economy and the role of the state in Eastern Europe and Albania in particular. This paper uses orderlogit regression to measure 27000 respondents likelihood to accept a greater role for the government intervention in reducing inequality. We find that in line with social mobility theory people are less likely to accept greater government intervention if they believe that they will be able to climb the social ladder in the future. We find that the neoliberalism was under threat prior to the crisis and
the latter has not led to a paradigm shift and to an alternative view of the economy. |

Author : Muhammad Naveed Arshad, Muhammad Afzal |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Gender is one of the most important topics of sociolinguistics
and being studied since last two decades. It has been analyzed in terms of comparison and contrast between two genders and sometimes, on one gender to realize its specific traits. Present research sets out to investigate how female characters are specified by their authors and how different qualities are attached to them by using a number of features. For this purpose, feministic model given by Mills (1995) is
used to locate those qualities in the novels of two Pakistani female writers, Omaira Ahmad and Bushra Rehman belonging to two different regions, Lahore and Multan respectively. Their two main female characters have been analyzed in the light of feministic model. Results reflect that both writers use almost same linguistic elements to represent their characters’ traits e.g. fragile, weak, simple and being influenced by others easily.

Problematizing ‘Continuity’ in the Green Revolution discourse: A case of Turmeric cultivators |
Author : Prasanth Kumar Munnangi, Chandri Raghava Reddy |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Green revolution is credited to have brought large scale socioeconomic changes with implications on political and cultural aspects of rural India. Reflecting on the impact of green revolution in the past five decades, social science discourse highlights the agricultural knowledge dissonance, capitalistic transformation of agriculture and social relations. However, shadowed in the overwhelming agrarian discourse is the continuity of community knowledge in the cultivation
of certain crops. The present paper, problematizing continuity observes that conventional knowledge that evolved indigenously is preferred by farmers in certain practices of agriculture than adopting scientific knowledge. The paper, presenting the case of turmeric crop cultivation in a particular geographical and socio-economic context, argues that agency tries to retain the knowledge that withstood the test of times. Based on the empirical findings the paper observes that the wider socio-cultural and historical context provides a cognitive frame which

Author : PARESH JOSHI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Shakespeare’s Hamlet is undoubtedly the most popular and the
most discussed works of art in the world literature. It is undoubtedly one of the most influential tragedies in English literature for the reason that it offers something fresh and new to the reader in every reading of the text. The play has been challenging scholars across the world for the sheer number of problems that the play brings forth. The beauty of the play lies in the craftsmanship with which Shakespeare has imbued problems in character of Hamlet: his proverbial procrastination and perplexing dynamics of Hamlet-Ophelia relationship. The present paper critically examines the love between Hamlet and Ophelia. The paper primarily focuses on love between Hamlet and Ophelia with reference to Ophelia’s situation and Hamlet’s state of mind. Finally, the paper tries to pass a value judgment by substantiating it with critical opinion of the removed critics on Shakespeare like A.C. Bradley, Wilson Knight, Edward

Author : Amin A. Alamin, Maria M.H.Satti |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Background: von Willebrand disease is a bleeding disorder
that is caused by deficiency or dysfunction of von Willebrand factor. People with blood group O have plasma von Willebrand factor antigen level 25 to 30 lower than do non-O individuals. von Willebrand disease comprises a heterogeneous group of patients in whom the clinical diagnosis is often difficult because of a considerable intraindividual phenotypic variation and limited laboratory data, bleeding and family history. We are going to determine the blood group, bleeding history, the family history and the laboratory parameters supporting the diagnosis, to determine the criteria used to register a patient as affected with von Willebrand disease and to evaluate which particular diagnostic criteria are most relevant to clinical practice in Sudan. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel (Diptera: Terphritidae) is a voracious pest and a reason of economic loss to different fruits and vegetables (Clausen, Clancy, and Chock 1965). It is a major threat to fruit and vegetable industry of the Pakistan. This experiment was performed to evaluate the preferable food source and host for oviposition. Different fruits e.g Banana (Musa sapientum), citrus(Citrus reticulata), apple (Pyrus malus), guava (Psidium guajava), ber (Zizyphus Jujuba) musk mellon (Cucumis melo) and vegetables including Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), Brinjal (Solanum melongena), round gourd (Praecitrullus fistulosus) and chilies (Capsicum annuum) were evaluated. Resulted showed that banana was most favorite food having average adult recovery (15.3)
under free choice, while in other experiment guava was most preferred host for egg laying with average pupal recovery of 103.25± 2.56 in free choice of fruits. In the case of vegetables, round gourd got maximum attraction for oviposition among other vegetables with 49.75± 3.79 pupal recovery.

The Effects of Combining NPK-20-10-10 with Urea on Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Attacks on Maize, and on Maize Growth and Yield Parameters in Njinikom (North West Cameroon) |
Author : NEBA NGWA AKONGNWI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :An experiment was carried out in Njinikom (North West of
Cameroon), during the second maize planting season of 2005 and the first planting season of 2006; to investigate the effects of combining NPK 20:10:10 with urea in a maize cycle, on Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) attacks on maize and on maize growth and yield parameters. The experimental design used was randomized complete block with four replications. There were four treatments i.e. 1without fertilizer (control); 2 that received NPK 20:10:10 only at a
rate of 200 kg/ha; 3 that received urea only at a rate of 40 kg/ha; and 4 that received a combination of NPK 20:10:10 at 200 kg/ha and urea at 40 kg/ha. There were significant difference between treatments for B fusca numbers and stem bored; treatment that received a combination of NPK and urea had the highest number of B fusca and highest level of stem bored. In both maize planting seasons, basal stem diameter,
total plant height and cob width were significantly more for plots that received both NPK and urea. These plots with both NPK and urea applied had the tallest plant and the widest cobs, followed by the plots that received urea only. It is concluded that combining NPK 20:10:10 and urea increases B fusca incidence on maize. However since there was an increased in plant vigor (increased stem diameter and total plant height) the end effect was increased in yield parameters. |
