Wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) is a widely accepted non-traditional material removal process for manufacturing of components with intricate shapes. In the present work, an investigation into the wire electric discharge machining of high strength and low alloy (HSLA) steels has been carried out. HSLA steels provide better mechanical properties and greater resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Experimentation has been done using Taguchi’s L 9 orthogonal array. Each experiment was conducted under different combinations of pulse on time, pulse off time and peak current. The optimum machining parameter combination was obtained by using the analysis of signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, analysis of means and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Further, the level of importance of the machining parameters on micro-hardness was determined by using ANOVA. The study shows that the Taguchi’s method is suitable to solve the stated problem with minimum number of trails.

The resources of petroleum as fuel are dwindling day by day and increasing demand of fuels, as well as increasingly stringent emission regulations, pose a challenge to science and technology. This aspect has drawn the attention to conserve and stretch the oil reserves by conducting research on alternative fuels. Therefore, in this paper the prospects and opportunities of using methyl esters of castor oil as fuel in an engine are studied. In the present work tests were conducted on a four stroke, single cylinder, D.I. diesel engine with Diesel and various blends of castor oil biodiesel. The results of performance and emission tests are compared for various blends of castor oil biodiesel with that of neat diesel. The results indicate that at blend B60, Brake Specific Energy Consumption (BSEC) is lowest with highest exhaust gas temperature and lowest smoke opacity as compared to other blends

thermophoresis particle deposition in mixed convection on a vertical plate embedded in a fluid saturated nonDarcy porous medium is studied using similarity solution technique. The effect of thermophoresis parameter (τ), nonlinear convective parameters (σ , γ) on concentration distribution, heat and mass transfer is discussed in detail for different values of mixed convection parameter(Ra x /Pex ) and Lewis number (Le). The results indicate that there is a considerable reduction in concentration distribution for higher values of mixed convection parameter and Lewis number. Alsothere is a significant variation in heat and mass transfer with respect to different values of thermophoresis parameter, non linear convective parameters is seen.

—Precision of machining is influenced by stiffness, long term thermal stability, damping properties of structural material used for machine tool. The traditional structural material like cast iron exhibit low damping, long manufacturing lead time, high cost. Epoxy granite an alternative material which exhibit good material properties like high stiffness, damping and coefficient of thermal expansion.

Agility metrics are difficult to define, mainly due to the multidimensionality and vagueness of the concept of agility [1]. In this work, a fuzzy logic, knowledge-based framework is intended to be developed for the assessment of an enterprise’s agility; as a case study. The necessary expertise explored to quantitatively determine and evaluate overall agility degree is to be represented via fuzzy logic analyses. Apart from estimating overall agility appraisement index; the study is aimed to be extended to identify agile barriers (obstacles towards achieving agility). The proposed appraisement module would be implemented in an Indian enterprise as a case study. Data obtained thereof, would be critically analyzed to reveal the current scenario of existing agile practices of the said enterprise and to seek for ill-performing areas which need future improvement.

To measure the performance of the spiral tube heat exchanger, its model is suitably designed and fabricated so as to perform experimental tests. The paper gives analysis of spiral tube heat exchanger over the shell and tube heat exchanger.

The purpose of this research is to improve productivity for small and medium scale casting industry. This research focused on the company, which produce various mechanical components by casting processes. This research used changes in plant layout, flow of material movement for better utilization of plant area for improve the productivity. Objectives towards accomplished this study is to identify problems in the casting and fastening process and improved it in terms of reduction in production time, number of manual process and back flow of materials by proposing an efficient plant layout and design of components used for loading of material used in fastening process. This research used systematic plant layout technique, concept of semi automation in casting process, solid edge model with design, which is used for loading of fasteners. The improvement in productivity was executed by eliminating back flow of work process, which reduces production time, number of process and effectively utilization of plant area. Reduce in time of loading fasteners in rotary retort furnace by suggestion implementation of hopper with mechanism with it proper design. This article mainly deals with the dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) composite rotor shaft. The FG shaft is mounted on two flexible bearings at its ends. A theoretical study has been established for the kinetic energy and the strain energy of the shaft, and the equations of motion of FG shaft have been formulated by using finite element method based on Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). The FG shaft is assumed to have isotropic material properties.The material property distribution of the FG shaft takes through the thicknessis assumed to vary according to exponential-law distribution. The present shaft system has been verified by comparing critical speeds with the available literature. A numerical example is also given to illustrate the frequencies, mode shapes, and transient response due to unbalances mass of disks.

The landing strut is a structure that supports a helicopter on ground and allows it to take-off, and land. In fact, landing strut design tends to have several interferences with the helicopter structural design. Now a day the weight of landing strut has become an important factor. Efforts are being made to reduce the weight of the helicopter and consequently increase the payload. This paper presents an approach to optimize the design of landing strut of a Light Compact Helicopter (LCH) made of Carbon Fibre Composite Material adopted from Aerospace Specification Metals (ASM). First the structural behavior is tested using the structural analysis when subjected to behavior constraints. Optimization process is carried out iteratively to minimize thickness of landing strut which results in the minimum weight of landing strut.

Automobile is one of the fast growing fields; many modification as well as inventions is made on this area as it is an endless journey. Most of the interests are made on parameters like mileage, fuel economy, aesthetic factors, etc. As the developments are made for sophistication apart from its advancements, demerits should be considered. Automobile exhaust causes air pollution. At the present situation, prevention of air pollution is made only at the point of exhaust from the outlet of manifold. The devices for this purpose absorb CO, HC up to certain level. But instead of concentrating on the conventional method for prevention of CO, HC, in this paper the inlet air was taken into consideration for prevention of pollution. The combustion of CO 2 in air is least, but its effect on environment is more. CO2 is one of the major sources for yielding CO. So it becomes necessary to eradicate CO2 from air prior to suction. Pure air supplied to the combustion chamber will reduce HC level in emission. In this literature the set up and other considerations to bring down CO and Hydrocarbon emissions in automobile exhaust is discussed.

REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) and RULA (Rapid Upper Body Assessment) are techniques to quantize the fatigue experienced by the worker while manually lifting loads. These assessments were carried out by a procedural analysis of body postures involved. The fatigue involved in a particular operation was quantified and accordingly changes in work method for system improvement were suggested. These techniques helped in process refinement by identifying actions causing high fatigue.

Friction stir welding (FSW), a solid state joining technique is widely used for joining Aluminum alloys in marine, aerospace, automotive and many other applications of commercial importance. In thepresent study, dissimilar Aluminum alloy (AA 6262-T6 and AA 7075-T6) plates were FS welded by varying the weld parameters such as Tool rotational speed, weld speed and axial force with cylindrical tool pin profile. The mechanical properties (hardness and tensile strength) of the Dissimilar Friction Stir welded (DFSW) specimens were tested and compared with the base materials. The observations have been elaborated in detail along with microstructures of parent and welded specimens through Optical Microscopy and it is observed that the weld parameters have a significant effect on mechanical and micro structural properties of the welds.

This paper studies the effect of cryogenic treatment on tool steels, many researchers shows their findings and optimized parameters affecting the properties of various tools steels under different machining process. Cryoprocessing is a supplementary process to conventional heat treatment, since it converts the retained austenite into martensite which is remain after heat treatment and due to martensite formation there is an increase in wear resistance, hardness, dimensional stability, and reduces tool consumption and hence extending intervals between replacements of tools which reduces the down time for the machine tool set up thus leading to cost reductions, which is an important consideration in industry. The effectiveness of these properties is improving by use of modern technology such as microprocessor, microcontroller to control temperature profile which avoids thermal shocks created. Some researcher developed their own system to control the drawback of cryogenic treatment such as developments of cutting forces are reduce by use of secondary liquid nitrogen supply. Various methods are incorporated to maintain low temperature such as use of liquid nitrogen, dry ice, adding nano particles to conventional cutting fluid.

— Clutch bleeding refers to the removal of air from the clutch hydraulic system. We have seen traditional methods to bleed air from the hydraulic clutch system. The normal process consumes a lot of cycle time and human labor in a plant that manufactures medium duty vehicles. A modification using a remote controlled unit can save time and labor and increase the efficiency of the entire process.

In this study, WC-Co and Cr3C2-NiCr coatings were deposited on H-13 hot forging steels by Detonation Gunspray process and analysed with regard to their performance under abrasive wear conditions. Dry Sand Abrasive Wear Testing Machine was used for wear tests, and the effects of three parameters namely: speed (rpm), load and composition, on abrasive wear of the material was investigated. The Detonation gun-sprayed WC-Co and Cr3C2-NiCr coated H-13 steel showed better abrasive wear resistance in comparison with their uncoated counter parts. It may be due to the higher hardness and toughness as a result of – D-gun sprayed WC-Co and Cr3C2-NiCr coating in comparison with the uncoated H-13 steel.

Automotive chassis can be considered as the backbone of any vehicle. Chassis is tasked at holding all the essential components of the vehicle like engine, suspension, gearbox, braking system, propeller shaft, differential etc. To sustain various loads under different working conditions it should be robust in design. Moreover chassis should be stiff and strong enough to resist severe twisting and bending moments to which it is subjected to. This paper presents the static load analysis (excluding damping and inertia effects ) of the chassis of TATA super ace using ansys workbench and stress optimization using standard techniques of vehicle modification.

The cable harness manufacturing industry has been growing in a fast pace during the recent years in India. Cable harnesses are used to link together all the electrical components scattered throughout any electrical equipment. Cable harness manufacturing involves a series of operations which are to be carried out in a proper sequence to make a good quality harness. In real time scenario, high volume production of cable harness with consistent good quality is a difficult target to achieve. This paper is directed at the efforts intended to improve the quality of cable harness manufacturing using six sigma methodologies. It includes collection of defects data, analysis of the defects data using FMEA methodology, determining the causes and taking corrective actions to eliminate the defects. Process flow chart and manufacturing lead time are also determined and lean tools such as one-piece flow and job instruction are also used.
