Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : The 30 years of local armed conflict in Sri Lanka that broke out between the state security forces and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) in early 1980s came to an end after Sri Lankan government demolished the LTTE in 2009. A end of such civil war was highly hoped by the people displaced by the same armed conflict to be an opportunity to return to their homes ending their protracted displaced live. The end of the war was also widely interpreted as an opportunity to renew their onetime ethnic relations, which remained vulnerably damaged after this armed conflict. Sri Lanka entered an uncertain phase of post-civil war political reconstruction. The announcement to hold early presidential elections in January 2010 added to uncertainties to Sri Lanka's post civil war political process. |

Author : C.Ramanjaneyulu , B.Jitendra |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The disc brake is a device for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel. Friction causes the disc and attached wheel to slow or stop. Brakes convert friction to heat, but if the brakes get too hot, they will cease to work because they cannot dissipate enough heat. This condition of failure is known as brake fade. Disc brakes are exposed to large thermal stresses during routine braking and extraordinary thermal stresses during hard braking. This paper studies about the model of a disc brake used in Honda Civic. Coupled field analysis (Structural + Thermal) is done on the disc brake. The materials used are Cast Iron. Analysis is also done by changing the design of disc brake. Actual disc brake has no holes, design is changed by giving holes in the disc brake for more heat dissipation.Modeling is done in Catia and Analysis is done in ANSYS. |

BEHAVIOURAL AND HISTOLOGICAL CHANGES INDUCED BY CADMIUM CHLORIDE ON ALIMENTARY TRACT OF FRESHWATER FISH, TILAPIA MOSSAMBICA (PETERS) |
Author : Meenakshi Sundaresan |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The present work deals with Cadmium induced behavioral and histological changes in the alimentary tract of Tilapia mossambica (Peters). The fish were exposed to sub lethal concentration of 8 ppm Cadmium chloride for 6 and 22 days. Sections of buccal epithelium, stomach, intestine and rectum of control and treated fish were stained with H/E and Giemsa and studied for histological purposes. Treatment induced changes observed include overall thinning of the wall of alimentary canal leading to loss of tubular nature, separation of the mucosa layer from the underlying tissue, desquamatisation of the epithelial lining and the isolation of epithelial cells etc. Occurrence of cytoplasmic vacuoles and tearing of the epithelial layer is quite frequent. Loss of villar tips in the intestine and increase in the number of lymph glands in the rectum are the other noticeable changes. Occurrence and the extent of such changes are proportional to the dosages of treatment and also to the period of exposure. |

ECONOMIC LESSONS FROM THE IBM AND THE MICROSOFT CASES |
Author : Nidhi Gupta |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : This paper presents an interesting economic analysis of two classic antitrust cases in the US history – The US v. IBM and The US. v. Microsoft. The cases illustrate two particular facts – one, that innovation (with or without monopoly) can lead to socially beneficial actions that competitors dislike (IBM Case); and second, leveraging, packaged in form of innovation, can be used to preclude the possibility of new innovations that could otherwise destroy the existing monopoly (Microsoft Case). Here it goes without saying that the question of monopoly leveraging (misuse of monopoly) cannot arise until presence of monopoly is justified. These cases nicely fit into a similar realm of analysis as they both revolve around the charges of monopoly leveraging and issues of bundling. Still, both considerably differ in terms of the facts involved and hence have particularly diverse results to offer. The economic investigation of these cases reveals that IBM's act reflected 'superior skill and foresight' while what Microsoft did was abuse of monopoly in one market to shut-out competition in new areas that could affect the original monopoly. Section I of the paper discusses the basic backdrop and understanding of both the cases. This is followed by Sections II and III that analyze both the cases respectively. Section IV summarizes the differences between the two cases and the last section concludes by giving some final words on what we can learn from these cases. |

RADICALISM IN BHATTACHARYA'S HE WHO RIDES A TIGER |
Author : Pooja Rani Jain |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :In view of the very element of rebellion and resistance the present paper is an attempt to undertake a study of the rebellious actions taken in one of the novels of Bhabani Bhattacharya He Who Rides A Tiger published in 1954. The novel is written with the background of Second World War and the famine of 1943. The novel definitely reflects a fiercest and sterner mood of the novelist by exemplifying a note of angry protest and revenge by his characters. Through this novel Bhattacharya brings out the hollowness of the society by telling us in a very amusing way how its central character Kalo, a low-caste blacksmith establishes himself as Mangal Adhikari, a respected and flourishing Brahmin. He takes the help of deception to wreak vengeance on the high-caste people. Through the stratagem of changing his caste and name he gets quit with his tormentors and persecutors. Kalo's riding the tiger of deceit and falsehood is not only a question of revenge but also a hard hitting attack on the futility of society. |

A CRITICAL READING OF TENNYSON'S IN MEMORIAM |
Author : Showkat Hussain Dar |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Like John Milton's “Lycidas,” and Shelley's “Adonias,” Tennyson's most celebrated and perhaps his finest poem, In Memoriam, is essentially an elegy. It was written to mourn the death of Arthur Hallam who was a young man of brilliant promise, and of unusual charm. The death of Hallam was an appalling loss for Tennyson, and Tennyson's grief was immediate, genuine and overwhelming. Written for the death of his close friend Hallam, In Memoriam is a collection of one hundred and thirty-one poems recording the different stages of Tennyson's grief. Deeply personal as well as embracing universal concerns, this was the work that established Tennyson as the foremost poet of his generation. Each of the lyrics constituting the poem expresses some overpowering mood – grief, desolation, despair, doubt, the dawning of hope, the sense of an ultimate assurance, the certainty of faith. Tennyson was far from being a dogmatic Christian. Religious doubt was very much part of the intellectual climate of the time, and Tennyson was as sensitive to it as any man. His poetry is a mirror which reflects the social, political, moral, and religious trends and tendencies of the Victorian era. His magnum opus work, In Memoriam, expresses the spiritual unrest and uncertainty of the people who lost their religious faith as a result of the advancement of scientific ideas. This poem reveals beautifully the torment of the modern soul oscillating between the hopes offered by Christianity and the negations of science. In spite of its pessimistic beginning, the poem ends as a poem of universal faith, a faith which rest ultimately on soul's instinct for immortality. In this poem, Tennyson achieves a firm belief in the reality of the self, in the immortality of the soul, in the freedom of the human will, and in a personal God guiding Nature to some infinitely remote but noble end. |

A STUDY ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE OF WOMEN WORKERS IN AGAR BATHI (PERFUMED STICKS) INDUSTRY IN BANGALORE CITY |
Author : B. Gururaj |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The burning of Incense stick (Agarbatti) in religious and social functions has been practised in India and many other countries in the world. Incense ( Latin : in cendere, "to burn") is composed of aromatic biotic materials, which release fragrant smoke when burnt. The term incense refers to the substance itself, rather than to the odor it produces. Many religious ceremonies and spiritual purificatory rites employ incense, a practice that persists to this day. The use of incense dates back to biblical times. The Babylonians used incense extensively while offering prayers to divining oracles . In India , some 2000 BC, various writings mention ' perfumers ' and 'incense sellers'. Evidence suggests that such oils were used mainly for their aroma. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Over the last decade we come across more frequently with the term Globalisation. Globalisation is a process of increasing interdependence, interconnectedness and integration of economies and societies to such an extent that an event in one part of the world affects people in other parts of world. Advances in transportation and telecommunications infrastructure, including the rise of the Internet, play vital role in globalization. It is generating interdependence of economic and cultural activities of one corner of the world to other corner. More and more nations are becoming integrated into the global economy through trade and capital flows. Globalisation entered India around 1991. It automatically has its effect upon the women . It affects different groups of women in different places in different ways. Under globalisation networking of women in different corners of the world take place. Consequently, they may raise joint campaign on common concern. With the advent of global communication networks and cross-cultural exchange there seems to be a change in the status of women . However, globalisation has indeed promoted ideas and norms of equality for women that have brought about awareness and acted as a catalyst in their struggle for equitable rights and opportunities. The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The Constitution not only grants equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. |

The temperature projections by CSIRO show that by 2050, the temperature increase under a high emission scenario is to be in the range of 1.0-2.2 for the Gilbert Islands, 1.1-2.1 for the Phoenix Islands, and 1.0-2.0 for the Line Islands. The result of this paper shows that temperature variability influences the transmissions of dengue disease through creating favorable condition of vector population growth. Vectors become infectious in warm temperatures. |

LANGUAGE INFLUENCE OVER CULTURE |
Author : S. K. Sheela |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Do the languages we speak shape the way we think? Do they merely express thoughts, or do the structures in languages (without our knowledge or consent) shape the very thoughts we wish to express? The question of whether languages shape the way we think goes back centuries; Charlemagne proclaimed that "to have a second language is to have a second soul." But the idea went out of favour with scientists when Noam Chomsky's theories of language gained popularity in the 1960s and '70s. Dr. Chomsky proposed that there is a universal grammar for all human languages—essentially, that languages don't really differ from one another in significant ways. And because languages didn't differ from one another, the theory went, it made no sense to ask whether linguistic differences led to differences in thinking. |
