Author : Amos, Nuhu Sunday, Ilemona Adofu, Innocent Okwanya |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This study examined the effect of health status on labour productivity in Adamawa state, Nigeria. The analysis is based on a sample of 440 observations generated by questionnaire across 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 55 communities. Multinomial logistic regression and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics revealed that the respondents fall within the age brackets 18-61 years and majority have tertiary education as their highest educational qualification. Monthly income of the respondents falls between 18, 000 – 100, 000 naira. Key finding of logistic regression shows positive effect of health status on worker productivity per hour (WPhour). Specifically, health status has a significantly positive coefficient (0.31) at 5% level of significance. Therefore, 1 unit increase in positive health status positively affects the log odds of those workers who work between 1-6 hours by 31% (outcome 1) compared to the base outcome. This indicates that a positive health status is associated with increased probability of productivity. Therefore, the study concludes that positive health status increases the likelihood of higher worker productivity. Based on this finding, the study therefore recommends that policy makers and stakeholders in the health sector should implement practical measures to encourage access to healthcare services to boost health status of citizens. |

Author : Kudzai Mugadza, Constantino Pedzisai |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This study delved into the nuanced perceptions of women in science students regarding online instruction at the tertiary level. The study adopted a qualitative paradigm where interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data from Chinhoyi University of Technology undergraduate women in science students. Data was collected from first year students to third year students aged between 19 and 26 years. Discussion of the findings is premised on the feminist approach to enable downscaling and understanding of the perceptions of women in science education on online learning experiences more holistically. Regardless of the benefits and advantages online learning has as opposed to traditional/physical learning, vulnerability, and resistance of women in science students at Chinhoyi University of Technology in the Institute of Materials Science Processing and Engineering Technology is worsened. The study found out that the great difference in how the women in science students perceive their experiences is hinged upon the students background, the age gap, academic level, geographical location and even technology proficiency. A gap in knowledge persists in the exploration of the nuanced challenges faced by women in science when transitioning from traditional classroom instruction to online learning at the tertiary level was identified in the study resulting from the socio-economic challenges that the students are experiencing. Insights from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how women in science navigate online education, offering valuable considerations for educators, policymakers, and institutions striving to create inclusive and effective learning environments. |

Forecasting Industrial Output in the Philippines: A Geometric Brownian Motion-Neural Network (Gbm-Nn) Model Analysis |
Author : Vicente E. Montano, Rowena C. Cinco |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This research applies the Geometric Brownian Motion-Neural Network (GBM-NN) model to predict the industrial output in the Philippines from January 1993 to December 2022. The GBM-NN model uses the stochastic properties of Geometric Brownian Motion to estimate trends and volatility better and introduces a neural network for more predictive accuracy based on nonlinearity in the data. The result suggests an industrial production series characterized by high variability. Due to the application of the GBM-NN method, it is verified that this model issues a more coherent prediction than traditional methods due to the lower RMSE and better R-square values. Results show a modest recovery in the industrial sector and further illustrate that the model is an excellent tool to help policymakers and industry participants make better decisions during uncertain economic periods. |

Graphic Novels in the School Library: Bridging the Gap Between Reluctant Readers and Literature |
Author : SIGY GEORGE |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This article examines the role of graphic novels in school libraries as an effective tool to engage reluctant readers and foster a love for literature. Reluctant readers, who often struggle with or avoid traditional texts, are drawn to the combination of visual and textual elements that graphic novels offer. These accessible narratives appeal to their interests, making graphic novels a valuable resource in promoting literacy and developing reading habits, particularly in middle and high school students. The study underscores the significance of graphic novels in enhancing reading motivation, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. By bridging the gap between visual storytelling and traditional literature, graphic novels serve as a gateway to more complex works, encouraging readers to explore a wider range of texts. School librarians play a crucial role in curating and promoting these resources, ensuring that graphic novels are effectively integrated into reading programs. Recommendations include incorporating graphic novels into school library collections and reading curricula, addressing any biases against their use, and advocating for the inclusion of diverse titles to support a broad spectrum of reader interests. This approach can create a more dynamic and inclusive reading culture, empowering reluctant readers to engage more confidently with literature. |
