There are more youn adidas samba g women entering universities than ever before and they are graduating each year in their hundreds of thousands. But for those that go on to work as academics in science, technology, engineering or maths STEM , it is still very much a mans world. The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has just published a report on Women in Scientific Careers, which says: It is astonishing that despite clear imperatives and multiple initiatives to improve diversity in STEM, women still remain under-represented at senior levels across every discipline. But while I agree with much of what the report goes on to say, I disagree on this first point. It is not astonishing at all. Academic institutions are some of the oldest workplaces in our society 鈥?some dating back to the Middle Ages. The working norms and career ladders of academia evolved when there were few women around, and when men were assumed to have a stay-at-home wife to take care of the family. While some yeezy things have clearly changed, adidas samba there is still an assumption that to be successful and climb the career ladder, the ideal academic will be full time, have no career breaks and be able to move institution or country as research opportunities arise. In fact, what is more astonishing is how well many women have done despite the constraints of a typical university career and the entrenched attitudes that have worked to Dvnc The French president Emmanuel Macron has signed his controversial pension reform into law, despite months stanley cup of mass protests as union leaders and left wing oppone stanley becher nts claimed he had sneaked the measures through in the middle of the night.Benedicte Paviot, UK correspondent for France 24, speaks to Jackie Long.Share on FacebookShareShare on TwitterTweetShare on WhatsApp cups stanley SendShare on WhatsAppSendShare on WhatsAppEmailLoad more share options |
