The Queensland Government today launched the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, which will get global coverage from CNN, giving filmmakers from 70 countries an opportunity to showcase their work. The first awards presentation ceremony will be held Nov 13, the first night of the annual conference of Screen Producers Association of Australia. The awards will eventually travel from city to city in a huge footprint including Iran, Afghanistan, Tokyo and Fiji. Queensland Events Corporation have been planning the awards for three years. It principally stages big sporting events. As someone with a love of film, I have long felt that film-makers in the part of the world I share are disadvantaged without the promotional might of Hollywood through its stanley cup two biggest events, the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes, said Queensland Events chair Des Power, a former Brisbane International Film Festival chair who written and produced feature films. Power discussed forming partnerships with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the Golden Globes, and the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union, but eventually decided that they would create the organisational infrastructure themselves, providing they could get a broadcaster to give the event scale. The site, formerly the Hamsworth Print Works in Didcot, 20 minutes drive from Oxford, was a printing press used by the Daily Mail newspaper until November 2016.Rebellion says the site, which it claims amounts to a value of $100m when the land, pre-existing building and improvement works are taken into consideration, is virtually ready-made for film production, already featuring a significantly large sound-proofed space that will take minimal work to upgrade. The largest existing spot will be converted into stanley cup a 25,000 sq ft sound stage which will be able to accommodate shoots from TV drama to large-scale Hollywood productions. The site will also feature full production and post-production office space. The first productions into the new space will be Rebellions own Judge Dredd TV sci-fi drama Mega-City One and the future-war feature Rogue Trooper, set to be directed by Duncan Jones Moon .Rebellion already own a three-stage studio space in Oxford, which is home to Europes largest performance capture stage and Rebellions subsidiary motion-capture company Audio |
