Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The literature works of Siddha medicine in Tamil are numerous. In Siddha literature a large number of medicines are involved in the treatment of diseases. Among them, certain medicines are used in the management of infectious diseases. Agents that kill microbes are called microbicidal, while those that merely inhibit their growth are called Biostatic. Antimicrobial resistance has a serious problem due to the massive application of anti biotics,
which are used prophylactically or remedially without proper medical indications. The ingredients of the trial drug has proven pharmacological actions such as carminative [Agattuvaai agatri], stimulant[Veppam undakki], anthelmintic [Puzhukkolli] etc, so it can be given to GIT [Gastro Intestinal Tract] disorders, UTI [Urinary Tract Infection]. In this paper,
we have given basic study on Anti microbial activity of the trial drug. The drug is effective against some microbes such as gram positive bacteria [eg: Staphylococcus aureus], gram
negative bacteria [eg: Proteus vulgaris], fungi [eg: Aspergillus flavus] etc., the Antimicrobial (Anti- bacterial and anti- fungal) activity of Siddha drug is tabulated and high lightened in this paper. |

ANTI-HYPERGLYCEMIC EFFECT AND EFFECT OF ANTI -OXIDANT ENZYMES INVOLVED IN METABOLISM OF SEENDHIL SARKKARAI IN EXPERIMENTAL ANIMAL |
Author : Uthayanan S, Balamanohary U, Justus Antony S, Manoharan A |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Background: Seendhil (Tinospora cordifolia) is widely used for medicinal purpose. Seendhilsarkkaraihas been used traditionally as anti-hyperglycemic in Siddha System of medicine.
Objectives: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anti–hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects on anti – oxidant enzymes involved in metabolism of seendhilsarkkarai in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats.
Materials and method: Wistar strains of male albino rats weighing between 180-220gm are used for this study. Diabetes
mellitus is induced in wistar rats by single intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared solution of Streptozotocin (25mg/kg BW) in physiological saline after overnight fasting for 12hrs. The body weights of the rats in every group were recorded weekly. five groups of 6 animals in each received normal saline for normal control, glipizide at a dose of (10mg/Kg orally) for diabetic control, SeendhilSarkkarai at a dose of (100mg/Kg orally) and 200mg/kg for euglycemic rat for
28 days,After 28 days of treatment, body weight, blood glucose, haemoglobin, glycosylated haemoglobin, plasma insulin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and
phospholipids and glycogen content and antioxidant enzymes level were determined. Blood was collected from the eyes (venous pool) by sino-ocularpuncture. The data was analyzed
statistically using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the group means were compared by Newman-Keul’s multiple range test (NKMRT)
Results: Total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and phospholipids levels were significantly increased, whereas HDL-C level was decreased in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats as compared to normal rats. Treatment of normal and streptozotocin induced diabetic rats with SeendhilSarkkarai at a dose of 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg (SEENDHIL SARKKARAI) for 28 days resulted in marked decrease in total cholesterol, triglycerides, Low density
lipoprotein(LDL) and phospholipids levels and increase in HDL-C levels as compared to streptozotocin induced diabetic rats respectively (P<0.001) as compared to diabetic control. Conclusion: Present study revealed that the seendhilsarkkarai has anti hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemicaction and can be safely used in the treatment of mild to moderate cases
of hyperlipidemia. |

Abstract :The occurrence of gynaecology related disorder is on the raise because of many
factors which include socio-economic, environmental and cultural conditions. Young women
in their reproductive age are more prone for conditions such as Poly Cystic Ovarian
Syndrome (PCOS) which affects their quality of life. PCOS is documented as Sinaipai
neerkatti in traditional siddha literatures. At present, the modern medicine treats
gynecological disorders especially PCOS with hormone tablets etc., PCOS is the
multifaceted problem with reproductive endocrine and metabolic dysfunction. It is also called
as Stein-leventhal syndrome. The chemical based drugs induce ovulatory cycle in women,
instead of allowing it to restore to its original healthy rhythm. Here we prefer the Siddha
medicine “Madhurigai sombu chooranam” as it is wholly natural (herbal), non-invasive,
non-chemical remedies and has no side effects. It was prepared as per Standard Operative
Procedure (SOP). Preliminary Phyto-chemical analytical study was also done for this
medicine. The results serve as an eye opener for further studies in order to identify the
potential efficacy of Madhurigai Sombu Chooranam. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Siddha System of Medicine has a wide range of concepts and basic principles, based
on which the pathological, diagnostic and treatment modalities are dealt with. This includes
the aspects of Mukkutrangal (Three humors), Arusuvaigal (Six tastes), Pancha bhoothangal
(Five elements), etc. In classic Siddha literatures, Many acute and chronic diseases have been
well explained in accordance with these basic principles. Some rare disorders are also
mentioned in the age-old literatures. One among them is Vikkal noi (Hiccups) which still
remains an challenging disorder to treat in the Conventional system of Medicine. Even
though it does not cause any drastic effects at the earlier stages, persistent hiccups may lead
to serious complications such as Gastro esophageal Reflex Disorder, Sleep disturbances,
Arrhythmia, weight loss etc. Though it is a rare disorder, finding a better line of treatment is
the need of the hour in order to reduce complications. In this paper we have dealt with the
pathological and treatment modalities based upon the Siddha basic principles. |

seasonal variations, individual’s profession, faith and cultivated food stuffs. The art of Indian
intellectual customs of nutriment solely rely on Nature which is much advanced and

Author : *T.Jenefa Rose Priya, B.Manikandan |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Ancient India gave much important in cleaning and protection of our environment, as
it is linked with the people’s behaviour and thoughts. Due to the drastic changes made by
industrial development, there is a degradation of natural wealth. Our lives are too polluted
just like the environmental pollution and goes on increasing day by day. Enhancement in
human health and environmental decline has become a dare today. This can be restrained
through the indigenous Siddha medicine which has the basic concept as; man is viewed as a
microcosm (Pindam) and the universe as a macrocosm (Andam). So, any peril to the Mother
Nature definitely affects the Human. It taught various deeds in maintaining the homeostasis
of the man with the environment for a healthy living in which plants play a prestigious role.
This paper deliberately summarizes both air (Kaatru) and water (Neer) pollutants, and
simpler natural methods by plants for prevention as described in literatures, along with the
recent scientific evidences proving that Siddha’s own plants are boon to human race |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :In every country traditional medicines find foundation in religious beliefs,
experiences and the World Health Organization engaged to establish definite guidelines for
methodology of clinical research and the appraisal of effectiveness of traditional medicine.
Siddha treatment aims in providing ultimate cure to both mind and body systems. Siddhas
developed a discipline called kaya kalpa, leads to longevity and fountain of youth with
complete freedom from illnesses. Free radicals cause many diseases. They attack on
membranes causing oxidation of lipids, loss of different enzyme activities and may cause
cancer. Plants are important source of antioxidants. Antioxidants completely stop or delay the
process of oxidation. Pancha kalpa, medicated head bath found in inscriptions (ARE
248/1923) of Vira Rajendra Chola dated on 5th regnal year (1067 Anno Domini) was found
by epigraphist K V Subramanya Iyer and mentioned in Pathaarththa guna Sinthamani?.
Ingredients are seed of Piper nigrum, rhizomes of Curcuma aromatica, and fruits of
Terminalia chebula, Seed of Emblica offinalis, seeds of Azadirachta indica and milk of black
cow (Karaampasu) used for both preventive and curative treatments. These counter
degenerative changes, which leads to aging by means of the natural antioxidant activity .Here
the study focused to explore the efficacy of the drug ensures longevity and freedom from
illnesses in inscription and siddha literatures and scientific studies. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Herbs of Family Zingiberaceae are being widely used as a raw drug in Siddha
medicine formulations. It has vast variety of medicinal uses based on their aromatic
properties. The Siddha system of medicine is a traditional system generated from Dravidian
culture and being served to mankind for more than 2000 years in combating diseases and the
maintaining physical, mental and spiritual health. Initially we have collected the medicines to
treat Raththapitham from our Siddha literatures. Raththam in Siddha refers to blood.
Raththapitham in Siddha refers to elevation of Pitham in blood. Elevation of Pitham in blood
results in Hypertension. Raththapitham may be co related with Hypertension. Eventually we
can found that most herbs used to treat Raththapitham were from Zingiberaceae. The herbs of
Zingiberaceae are used in treating various ailments like diarrhoea, sinusitis, fever, cancer and
so on. In this work we have specified the role of those herbs in treating Raththapitham.
Hypertension affects about one billion people worldwide. Hypertension is the major cause for
cardiovascular diseases worldwide. Globally Cardiovascular disease accounts for
approximately 17 million deaths a year. Nearly one third of these Hypertension accounts for
about 9.4 million deaths worldwide every year. Hypertension is responsible for at least 45%
of deaths due to Heart disease. In 2008, worldwide, approximately 40% of adults aged 25 and
above had been diagnosed with Hypertension; the number of people with the condition rose

guinea pigs using histamine-induced bronchospasm, where pre convulsive dyspnea was used
as an end point following exposure to histamine aerosol. It was evaluated for antihistamine
and bronchodilator activities and it administrated at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body
weight. A dose response curve for histamine is lower, when compared with histamine
induced contraction (p<0.05) at moderate dose level. The LC at moderate dose level
significantly prolonged the latent period of convulsions as compared to control following the
exposure of histamine aerosol. The result of study showed that Lavankathi Chooranam (LC)
significantly protected the Guinea pigs against histamine-induced bronchospasm. Significant
increase in between pre and post treatment period (**P<0.01). End of the study reveals that
the Lavankathi Chooranam (LC) is more effective in the treatment of Bronchial asthma. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Siddha system of medicine is a well defined science in the medical world. It is one of
the most ancient systems of medicine for curing diseases. The symptoms of cervical
carcinoma are blood tinged vaginal discharge, painless menorrhagia, malignancy enlarges.
This symptom may be correlated with karuppaikazhunthuputtru in our siddha system.
Siddhars told a wonderful medicine for karuppaikazhunthuputtru namely Chithira Pallathi
Mezhugu. This traditional preparation is being used for ages without scientific validation. In
this current study, the attempt is made to establish the fact of anticancer activity of the drug
above. In modern scientific approach, this anticancer study can see through In-vitro HeLa cell
line method. This cell line method is used for cervical carcinoma. The name HeLa cell line
was derived from the name of the lady Henrietta Lacks who had affected by the cervical
carcinoma at first. This study results found that the % growth inhibition increasing with
increasing concentration steadily up to 30.127µg/ml on HeLa cell line and IC50 value of this
assay. Now overall study evaluate that Siddha Formulation ChithiraPallathiMezhugu has
potential activity on HeLa cell line. So this drug has considerable anticancer activity on
cervical carcinoma. |

Author : P. Kamali1 , B.R.Deepika1 , R.Pavala1 , Thomas M.Walter2 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Treatment of diseases in Siddha system is different and has its own unique feature.
Through Siddhars vision, they divided the medicines into 32 Aga (Internal) and 32
Pura(External) medicines. These medicines both prophylactic and therapeutic in nature and
also provide immunity. In Siddha system, diseases are classified into 4448.Our body function
mainly depends on three states of humor (tridosha). Any changes in the level of tridosha
cause disease. IraippuNoi is classified under the division of swasakasam which is one of the
divisions of Irumal. IyaIraippu is one of its type which is due to increased Iyam (one of the
states of humors). Asthma is very common chronic disease having worldwide prevalence.
Asthma is not a contagious disease. It may be due to hereditary, stress and some other
reasons. A severe attack of cardiac asthma associated with rapidly developing a pulmonary
oedema constitutes one of the commonest and gravest of all emergencies. According to a
survey between 100 and 150 million people around the globe suffer from asthma. Worldwide
deaths from this condition have reached over 1,80,000 annually. In this review, the signs and
symptoms of iyairaippu as found in both Siddha and Modern medicines have been
documented.

Diseases (Including Hypertension). This study is evaluated the efficacy and safety of the
Siddha drug Senkaluneer Chooranam (SKC) in Albino rats. The Siddha drug SKC its a
diuretic effect is found out method in Lipschitz method using frusemide drug as standard.
The group – I (Controle Group) was given a normal saline, Group - II (Standard
group) serves as standard received the Frusemide (20mg/kg) and the three test groups – III,
IV, V were treated by Senkaluneer Chooranam (SKC) doses level of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg,
300mg/kg respectively. Albino rats were kept in metabolic cages and 24 hours urine was
collected. Total urine volume and urinary excretion of measured using a standard measuring
cylinder. SKC has secreted dose dependant increase volume in total urine volume, when
compare to control group. The test drug Senkaluneer Chooranam at the dose levels of
100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 300 mg/kg, which its showed a statistically significant increase in
the volume of urine with a dose dependent increase in the diuretic Urine volume to 10.28,
13.58 and 14.37 respectively. The drug also confirmed a significant increase in sodium
excretion in comparison to control group. An increase (p ? 0.05) in urinary excretion of
potassium is also observed. The Senkaluneer Chooranam (SKC) treated rats showed high
diuretic effect as compared to control but this effect is less than the frusemide (Group II). So,
Senkaluneer Chooranam (SKC) is good diuretic activity. |

Abstract :“Do your duty and leave the rest to God” is the essence of the Bhagavat Gita.
Selfless service for a right cause and completely focusing towards it without any expectation
should be the ultimate aim. The outcome of any work will be positive only when the work is
done selflessly without any expectation. Disinterested work will not pave way to the
achievement the goal. One should deeply get involved in any action which he/she is doing.
We should overcome the obstacles in order to reach the destination. The destination is
nothing but the eternity. Siddhars have mentioned about Gnyaana and Kanma Yogam in their
Literatures and also they have followed it to attain the eternity. In the literatures, it is
mentioned as Gnyaana maarkkam and kanma maarkkam. Each and every man should follow
Kanma Yogam and should not deviate from that so as to maintain peace and health. In this
paper, we have mentioned about the Kanma Yogam, their outcomes and benefits, Kanma
diseases based on Siddha texts, and their corrective measures (Kanma nivarthi) and the
