Factors associated to family coping with the healthcare process of the critically-ill patient | Author : Yanelis Geylgel-Wilson, Tamara Hudson-Megret, Marely Maslen-Bonnane, Coralia Chereli-Lescaille | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Introduction: the study of family members copingwith the healthcare process of criticallyill patients is a social demand that needs to be addressed today. Objective: to validate the viability of a system of family interactive workshops in order to improve family coping of the healthcare process of the patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Hospital General Docente “Dr. Agostinho Neto” in Guantanamo. Method: an experimental study was carried out, in which the population was made out of the family members (the facilitators of the patient-family-doctor interaction) of intensive-care-unit-discharged patients, in the period from January to February, 2019 (N=95). A random sample was selected (n=25) and interviewed to find out how effective the interactive workshops were in the learning process of how to cope with the situation of having a critically ill family member, and how important the participation on this process was for the family. The contribution of a workshop system was validated using a pre-experimental study. Results: 100% of the families expressed the need for preparation in workshops aimed to improve coping skills to face the treatment and healthcare of an ill family member. 60 % of families involved in the workshops system improved their coping abilities to carry on with the difficulties of the treatment of their ill family member. Conclusion: the family interactive workshops system creates favorable changes in the preparation of the families to cope with the treatment process of one of their members dealing with a critical illness. |
| Strategy to face COVID-19 at the Universidad de Ciencias Médicas Guantánamo | Author : Sara Pura Terrado-Quevedo, Yamila Hayde Elías-Oquendo, Alis Cantalapiedra-Luque, Ileana Barbeito-Guardado | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic as well as
other spheres of social life have had great
impact in medical education. Objective: to
promote the experiences acquired during the
application of the strategy to confront the
COVID-19 pandemic within the undergraduate
training process at the Universidad de Ciencias
Médicas Guantánamo. Method: a descriptive
study collecting historical information of the
topic was carried out, making a documental
analysis of the Ministerio de Salud Pública de
Cuba decisions issued, and the ones issued by
the Universidad de Ciencias Médicas
Guantánamo to reorganize the undergraduate
training process during the pandemic. Results:
the undergraduate training process at the
Universidad de Ciencias Médicas Guantánamo
used a strategy to confront the pandemic
formed by 4 main basis: students, professors
and workers training in biosafety requirements
and confrontational protocols, curricular
adjustments in each medical science major, the
use of a distance learning program based on
the virtual platforms, and the active
epidemiologic inquiries made by students and
professors. All details were explicitly informed.
Conclusions: the strategy used to confront the
pandemic caused some modifications in the
undergraduate training process at the
Universidad de Ciencias Médicas Guantánamo,
following to the social demands in Cuba, which
ensure the continuity of the teaching-learning
process. |

| Statistical and mathematical method to monitor COVID-19 status in relation to the peak of the epidemic | Author : Javier Pérez-Capdevila, Yanelis Cobas-Ortiz, Alejandro Javier Pérez-Cobas | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Introduction: several models have tried to
predict and evaluate the current status of the
pandemic that the new coronavirus, labeled
SARVS-CoV2, has caused. This evaluation would
be the basis for decision making. Therefore, the
importance of monitoring the COVID-19 status
in a selected period of time is very important
for the process of information management,
which can be done through statistical and
mathematical methods in order to make big
decisions to control the epidemic. Objective: to
propose a mathematical and statistical method
to monitor COVID-19 status in contrast to the
peak of the epidemic in a selected period of
time. Method: several theoretical methods
were used, specially: analysis, synthesis,
abstract; and other purely mathematical
methods. Results: as a result of the practical
application of the methods used, valid and
reliable information was generated in charts,
supporting an effective process of decision
making. Conclusions: this proposal shows the
robustness of its theoretical aspects and a
practical effectiveness that, even if elaborated
to submit Cuban-generated national data, it
could be used in other countries, and even in a
provincial or municipal level. |
| System model to face COVID-19 pandemic supported on a Balanced Scorecard | Author : Leudis Orlando Vega-de la Cruz, Milagros Caridad Pérez-Pravia | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Introduction: facing COVID-19 adds important
challenges for healthcare professionals in
charge of the facilities, and the control and
prevention of infections in the community. One
of the biggest challenges faced by hospitals is
to manage their resources with more efficiency
without lowering the quality of the service.
Objective: to shape the efficacy of COVID-19
management system, based on its effectiveness
and efficiency. Method: a balanced scorecard
was made based on indicators of efficiency and
effectiveness. Results: the balanced scorecard
was designed to support the pandemic
management system, with 5 indicators of
performance: Financial, Learning and Growth,
Internal Processes, Client and Life (the last one
related to virus lethality indicator). The global
indicators of efficiency-effectiveness and
EFECOVID serve as references to determine the
usefulness of the system to face the pandemic.
Conclusions: the EFECOVID indicator was
designed to diagnose the efficacy of COVID-19
management system. It is supported by a
balanced scorecard, different from the
traditional one in order to stop the pandemic,
contrary to ¨Vida¨ program, that was focused
on dealing with the pandemic. |
| Patient round from a medical and pedagogical point of view | Author : Rogelio Creagh-Bandera, Fidel Creagh-Bandera, Irayma Cazull-Imbert, Abel Creagh-Cazull | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Introduction: during the undergraduate
medical practitioner training, the student
assuming the role of the physician undertake
actions according to the curricular
requirements and content of the profession;
and at the same time, acquires the legal and
ethical foundations to be used in his future
professional career. Objective: to evaluate the
patient round from a medical and pedagogical
point of view. Method: a pedagogically-focused
descriptive study was conducted at the Hospital
“Dr. Agostinho Neto” in Guantanamo. The
methods used were: analysis-synthesis,
documentary study, the systemic-structural
method and systematization. A bibliographic
review was carried out in the following medical
databases (SciELO, LILACS, REDALYC), using the
following descriptors: patient round, medical
education, education at work. Results: during
the patient rounding implementation in
healthcare sittings, the student-professor-basic
work team interaction enhanced the learning
process of the students, giving them a leading
role in their self-learning skills. It also promoted
a link between medical education and medical
practice through the interaction with the
patient; and group learning through
socialization with the work team. Conclusions:
essential information on the pedagogical and
didactic foundations of the patient round was
pointed out. A didactic principle is found in the
process, defining the dynamics of the patient
round: principle of synergistic interaction
between professor, student, members of the
basic work team, and the patient in his/her
family and social environment during the
patient rounding process. |
