The Comparison between Contextual Guessing Strategies vs. Memorizing a List of Isolated Words in Vocabulary Learning Regarding Long Term Memory |
Author : Leyla Vakili SAMIYAN, Sara Raouf KHORASANI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Guessing the meaning of unknown vocabularies within a text is a way of learning new words which is named textual vocabulary acquisition. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a textual guessing strategy on vocabulary learning at the intermediate level. Textual guessing strategy is to guess the meaning of vocabularies with the help of surrounding words or sentences in the co-text without any translation. This paper reports the findings of two quantitative studies conducted on English language learners with the Intermediate 2 level of proficiency in Kavosh foreign language institute, Mashhad, Iran. Twenty male and female attendants were selected and assigned to ’context’ and ‘non-context’ groups. The context group received an instruction to infer the meaning of new words while the non-context participants were treated as learning new vocabularies individually (autonomously). The result of the independent sample t-test at the post-test stage revealed that the probability value of t-test with an equality of variances assumption is lower than 0.05 (0.04700). So this result represented that there is a meaningful difference between the experimental group and the control group considering their amount of learning. The results indicated that textual guessing strategy had more effect on their long term memory. It was also revealed that the words learned through context are used more frequently than those learned in isolation in the speaking repertoire of the participants. |

Author : Ender ŞENEL, Kemal GÖRAL |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : The aim of this study was to compare Turkish folk dancers with sedentary people in terms of some physical fitness parameters. 12 women and 14 men from Turkish folk dances team, which took part in a contest in 2013 and 12 sedentary women and 14 sedentary men from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, totally 52 volunteers, participated in this study. Height, weight, strength, flexibility, vertical jump and anaerobic power of subjects were measured with measuring tools. Descriptive and Mann-Whitney U tests in SPSS 16.0 were used to analyze data. When physical fitness parameters of men Turkish folk dances athletes and sedentary men were compared, while statistically significant difference was found between the right-hand grip strength, the left-hand grip strength and vertical jump (p<0.05), there was no statistical difference found between other variables (p>0.05). When physical fitness parameters of women Turkish folk dances athletes and sedentary women were compared, while statistically significant difference was found between the right-hand grip strength, the left-hand grip strength, vertical jump and anaerobic power (p<0.05), there was no statistical difference found between other variables (p>0.05). Consequently, it was found that the right and left handgrip strength and vertical jump values of women and men Turkish folk dances athletes were higher than sedentary. It can be said that these differences result from that they usually do exercises for development of these parameters because of the nature of this sport branch. |

Author : Mohammad Taghi AGHDASI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the relationship between multidimensional perfectionism and athlete burnout. The target population of research consisted of 168 elite handball players who participate in National Junior Championships. 123 athletes were selected randomly as the sample. We used a multi-section inventory to collect data, contained measures of multidimensional perfectionism, dispositional achievement goals, athlete burnout, perceived satisfaction with goal attainment and perceived coach satisfaction with goal attainment. In this study was used Pierson correlation and Hierarchical regression for the analysis of collected data. Regression analyses revealed that socially prescribed perfectionism demonstrated a significant positive association, and self-oriented perfectionism a significant negative association with burnout dimensions. In conclusion, in this study were not supported the hypotheses of the moderating influence of Perceived satisfaction with goal attainment and achievement goal orientations on the relationship between multidimensional perfectionism and athlete burnout. |

Author : Yomi AWOSIKA, Babatunde Samson OLUSOLA |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This study focuses on personal attributes of undergraduates as determinants of sport participation in selected Nigerian universities which include age, gender and marital status. The instrument for the study is a self-developed, validated questionnaire. The subjects of the study are undergraduates in selected Nigerian universities. Analysis is the use of percentages and inferential statistics of chi square X2 at 0.05 level of significance. The results derived from the study reveal that students’ personal attributes significantly determine their sport participation. Among other recommendations made is that it is highly imperative for university authorities to make frantic efforts to develop modalities capable of encouraging students’ sport participation since most of them have sport potentials as evident in their post-primary school sport records. This will enable our universities groom healthy and academically sound graduates. |

Author : Serkan HACICAFEROĞLU |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The purpose of this study is to determine level of communication skills perceived by college students of School of Physical Education and Sports (PES) from teaching staff. The sample of the study, conducted by using screening model, consisted of 633 PES college students. Research data were collected by “Assessment Scale for Communication Skills”. Arithmetic mean, t-test, one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used in the study. Consequently, it is determined that students in the sample perceived positive communication skills from teaching staff at moderate-level. It is observed that, except variable of respect dimension in the department where they receive education, there wasn’t any statistically significant difference in the students' gender variable with respect to the dimension of the democratic attitude, whereas there were significant differences in all lower dimensions according to the class variable. It is also concluded that college students of coaching and management department perceived more communication skills from the teaching staff compared to the students of teaching department in respect dimension, and freshmen and the sophomores perceived more communication skills positively with more points compared to the other college students with respect to the dimensions of respect, expression, values, motivation and democratic attitude. |

Relations between Some Anthropometric Characteristics and the Variable for Assess Situation-Motoric Knowledge Smash from the Zone 4 for the Women Volleyball Players in the Age of 14-18 in Republic of Macedonia in the Season 2009/10 |
Author : Andrijana MISOVSKI |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The research was made on a sample of 151 female volleyball players in the age of 14-18 in Macedonia, which represents the population of players competing in state championships for the young categories in season 2009/10. The study applied 1 variable to assessment situation-motor knowledge and 18 variables for the assessment of the anthropometric characteristics. In order to determine the relationship between anthropometrical characteristics and variables for assessment of the situation-motor knowledge linear regression analysis is applied, were the criteria for assessment situation-motor knowledge is the variable smash from the zone 4 and predictors are the anthropometrical variables. Based on the obtained results it can be determined that the predictor system of anthropometrical variables has statistically significant relationships on variable for assessment of the situation-motor knowledge. |
