A PERMANENT DIVIDE IN THE JUSTICE PARTY - DEPRESSED CLASSES RELATIONSHIP IN COLONIAL TAMIL NADU , 1921-1923 |
Author : A.Nidhya |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The paper aims to highlight the bitter relations that prevailed between the Justicites and Depressed Classes from 1921- to 1923 in Madras Presidency in general and Tamil Nadu in particular. The Pulianthope Troubles, as they came to be called, created growing disgust and distrust among the Depressed Classes towards Justice Party. The Pulianthope Troubles revealed that in spite of the broad –based non-Brahmin sensibility which inhered in non-Brahmin caste Hindus and the Depressed Classes alike , on occasion , the two groups could revert to traditional positions of domination and subordination respectively. It was the Justice Party that was most affected by the Pulianthpoe events. The Pulianthope Trouble severed the relations between the Justicites and Depressed Classes. Thus the Justice Party's dream of constituting a unified non-Brahmin fraternity was retarded in its realization in Madras Presidency and Tamil Nadu |

POLITICAL PARTIES AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN INDIA |
Author : ARVIND DESHMUKH |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Participation is both an activity and an attitude. As an activity it is a social activity. Someone taking a morning walk is not participating in anything. Someone taking part in a 100-meter race does. Someone staying in a neighborhood for a long time without knowing any of one's neighbors is not having a participant attitude. What then is political participation? Of course, we mean a kind of political activity and a kind of political attitude. Since the 50's however it has attracted widespread attention and there seems to be a general agreement among the Political Scientists on the value and necessity of further political participation. But this apparent agreement conceals major disputes both at the levels of political theory and practical politics. Before we explore these we should begin with the concept of political participation itself. |
