A teacher who facilitates education for an individual student may also be described as a personal tutor . Abstract : he novelist, Shashi Deshpande thr ough her novel, studies these issues and pr oblem of the contemporary middle class women. She pictur es modern, educated and car eer -oriented middle class women, who ar e sensitive to the changing time and situations. Her novel, 'Roots and shadows' has won the Thirumathi Rangamal prize for the best Indian novel of 1982-83. Indu, the pr otagonist is caught up in a conflict between their family and pr ofessional r oles, between individual aspiration and social demands. Indus, the journalist, is torn between self—expr ession and social stigmas—material and psychological. Majority of the characters in the novel have r estrictive notion of cultural identity with which their vision of political change is bur dened. However , the liberated pr otagonist Indus brings them out of their cocoons and for ces them to accept the values of a new modern world. |
