Author : Dr. M. Vaijo Prema |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Since the days of the Indus Valley Civilization, Indian
culture has been the product of a synthesis of diverse cultures and religions that came into contact with the enormous Indian sub continent over a very long stretch of
time. The Indian concept perceives the individual, the
society and the universe as an organic whole. Everyone is a
child of God and all fellow beings are related to one another
and belong to a universal family. The expanded assertion
and recognition of rights, and the dimensions to rights that
are emerging, have given rise to situations of conflicts
among rights, and consequently, among rights activists.
Choices are being made, and a prioritization of rights
occurring in a range of areas. The neglect of women’s rights
in the human rights arena for decades after the Universal
Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR), and the Constitution
of India, has had the women’s movement demanding, and
acquiring even if partially, recognition of women’s rights as
human rights. There were some among our respondents
who held that human rights are those which are asserted
against state action and inaction. |

ROHINTON MISTRYS A FINE BALANCE: THE EMERGENCY AS MISFORTUNE |
Author : Ravi C. M |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This paper attempts to analyze critically the 1975 emergency period as a misfortune with a special reference to Rohinton Mistry’s novel A Fine Balance (1995). This analysis assumes its importance as most of the political and historical narratives on the emergency period view it as a political problem and technically analyze its implications on the Indian democratic system. The historians interpret their data either by excluding certain facts from their account as irrelevant to their narrative
purpose or in order to reconstruct, and they include in their
narratives an account of some events for which the facts
regarding the explanation of its occurrence are lacking. In
either case as Nila Shash says, “the historian interprets his
material by filling in the gaps in his information on
inferential or speculative grounds” (Shash, 1998; 97). |

THE STUDY OF THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF SOUNDS IN ENGLISH: ATOOL BASED APPROACH |
Author : M.Somathasan and V.Thiruvalluvan |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The purpose of this paper is to test the knowledge in distinctive or phonetic features or properties of English phonemes found in the first year students of Higher National Diploma in English (two and half year course)at Advanced Technological Institute at Trincomalee, Sri Lanka; and further make them become familiar in the distinctive features of the sounds in Englishas Introduction to Phonology is one of the subjects in their course. Phonetic features are very helpful to identify and compare the sounds of English. Further, these features are essential for phonological analysis. It is not sure to expect all the students in the class to excel the ability to find out the phonetic features of the sounds correctly, because they are not familiar with phonology as it is not introduced in school curriculum; and the students who follow the course of HND in English, meet the subject first time in the class. Thus, most of them are struggling in identifying these features except one or two naturally intelligent ones. Having considered this concept in mind, we have developed a simple student-friendly learning supporting tool named as Distinctive Feature Finder(DFF) based on feature matrix in order to help these students be successful in their subject and the course, as well. |
