Author : Geetha Gopinath |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :In a world that is beset with conflict, students are burdened the whole gamut of ‘the need to succeed’. Alongwith high parental expectations goal confusion also form a matrix. With
all these issues students find it extremely difficult to maneuver and move forward through these intricate webs. The solution for facing these lies in the development of resilience in students at a programme level for which a theoretical sound approach is important. Resilience is the process of adapting well in the phase of adversity, trauma, tragedy and threats which are all significant sources of stress. This study covers the various factors from different perspectives that are involved in developing resilience and also describe the compensatory, as protective and challenge models at different levels for creating a frame work within which resilience can be developed. This frame work can be usefully incorporated into a research based module which can be used for training teachers, teaching students resilience. Developing a module from this
frame work will go a long way in ameliorating the status of our children as they face anever changing and some times very traumatic world situation. |

Author : Venkateswara Rao Koduru |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :India is one such Third World country, which is characterized by poverty and unemployment. According to 2011 census 32.7 per cent of the population is living below poverty line. Further, a huge share of developmental benefits is going in favour of a small section of the society, who has high socio-economic status. This has been resulting in the widening of income
and wealth disparities. Consequently, the intensity of poverty has been rising and as a result, high incidence of poverty has been falling on women. Rural women are mostly engaged in the
farms as agricultural labourers. They face the problems of job insecurity and exploitation on par with the male workers. In addition, they are subjected to wage discrimination and the nature of work assigned to them is usually drudgery in nature. They are also subjected to sexual exploitation at the work place. In the homes they are expected to do all the domestic chores. Therefore, the rural women in lower strata of society need urgent and special attention. |

TRENDS IN FINANCING OF SCHOOL EDUCATION IN PUNJAB: PRE AND POST REFORM PERIOD |
Author : Sukhwinder Singh |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Education is the significant instrument of empowerment of individual, society and
nation. Realizing this growth enhancing values of school education, governments led to
universalize the school education which led to the involvement of public resources in the school
education sector. This public funding policy includes direct public provision, subsidies to
private suppliers or some mixture of both the methods in the form of New PPP Pattern. The
developing world in general and Asian countries in specific education sector has been facing a
resource crunch and has been victim of low level of priority in pre reform region. The problem
got further aggravated with the adoption of the new economic policy league which paved the
way for commercialization of education, and it has turned education from being social service to
a marketable commodity. The post reform era has been evident of declining trends in public
expenditure in education and especially school education. India, being a developing country, is
not an exception to this scenario. The present scenario is one in which the demand of finance for
education is growing at geometric ratio, but the government is facing severe budgetary crunch.
Education is a concurrent subject and state funding accompanying with nationally sponsored
schemes is a significant contributor to educational expenditure. Within the school education
sector, the there are two major subsector: Primary and Secondary School education. The
expenditure on education is classified under two heads: revenue expenditure (operational
expenditure), and capital expenditure. Revenue expenditure comprises 95 per cent of total
educational expenditure in Punjab. Punjab is one of the most developed states of the country, but
it is not in the position to establish a lead in the country in terms of educational attainments. |

INEQUALITIES IN A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: A STUDY OF THE PORTUGUESE COLONIAL SOCIETY OF WESTERN COASTAL INDIA |
Author : Jaya Priyadarshini |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Inequalities are an inescapable feature of any human society. The bases of such discriminations range from religion, sex, caste, creed to economic, political status, and the like.
Such noted differences were remarkably etched in the Portuguese colonial society of western India in the seventeenth century. Since this society was mainly dominated by the ‘superior’ raced people born and brought up in Portugal, the margins of the aforementioned discrimination can be ably extended to include racism. Marked by such deep lines of divisions, this society saw its own contradictions which appropriately contributed in the slow but definite decline of the Portuguese empire in India. |

A BRIEF LOOK INTO INDO-KENYA TRADE RELATIONS |
Author : Nathan Gitonga |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The economic performance of Kenya has recorded significant improvement within
the last two decades, as it keeps on recovering from past external and internal shocks. The
country’s economy is greatly dependent on Agriculture. Until 2013, India was the largest source
of imports for Kenya. Imports from India accounted for approximately 14.1 percent of Kenya’s
total imports. The trade relations between Kenya and India started before Kenya’s
independence. Recently, investment and trade partnerships between the two countries have
culminated in a wave of new investments. Bilateral trade between India and East African
countries was worth US$3,900.67 million during 2009-10 as compared to US$ 4,863.22 million
during 2008-09. Kenya exports are mainly dominated by agricultural commodities, namely tea,
coffee and horticultural products. Kenya also exports significant amounts of clothing and
apparel to foreign nations. Even though Kenya exports low-value main commodity exports to
India, the country imports high-value products. Kenya’s exports to India and other countries are
vulnerable to both weather conditions and international prices, making it a deficit country with
regards to trade balance. Kenya being a major trading partner, India has come out to be the
second largest investor in Kenya’s economy. Kenya’s trade policy has evolved through three
distinct policy orientations namely Import Substitution Policies; Trade Liberalization by the
Structural Adjustment Policies; and Export Oriented Policies. There is a great possibility that
trade ties between the two countries will continuously grow, given the nature and number of
investments recorded currently. |

A PICTURE OF DISTURBED FAMILIES PORTRAYED IN RAMANATHAN’S PLAY ‘COLLABORATORS’ |
Author : Shaikh Shakil Jilani and R. P. Lokhande |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The present paper deals with the changing scenario of typical Indian families. Since India has accepted the global economic policy, the families in high class and middle class are segregating like an explosion of nuclear bomb. Moreover, neither man nor woman is happy with his/her present partner. They always prefer to live in illusion and embrace the past. Shivani, Kranti, Himanshu and Arundhati are the characters portrayed in the play Collaborators. They see the ideal dreams of life removing their present partner. None of them is happy with their current partners, so everybody wants to take divorce and start a new life with their bygone partners. Nobody wants to lead the barren and monotonous life. They want change; either that be a productive or destructive. They deny the stable life and, the major thing I put up in this paper is, every modern character wants to break the convention of marriage and establish new relationship which would not be based on any social or cultural values. They would be free and everybody would have freedom to live according to his/her whim. If we look at them by wearing a spectacle of social and cultural values, we seem these characters as the disordered personalities or caricatures. On the contrary, if we look at them without any social or cultural prejudice, it seems that what they perform is nothing but their search for inner voice and outer freedom that neither damages anyone nor overpowers anybody. |

FINDING THE FAST NEAREST NEIGHBORS WITH KEYWORDS USING SPATIAL QUERIES |
Author : Soumyashree A N , Neetha Natesh And Shagoufta Taskeen |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Conventional spatial queries, such as range search and nearest neighbour retrieval,
involve only conditions on objects’ geometric properties. Today, many modern applications call
for novel forms of queries that aim to find objects satisfying both a spatial predicate, and a
predicate on their associated texts. For example, instead of considering all the restaurants, a
nearest neighbour query would instead ask for the restaurant that is the closest among those
whose menus contain “steak, spaghetti, brandy” all at the same time. Currently the best solution
to such queries is based on the IR2-tree, which, as shown in this paper, has a few deficiencies that
seriously impact its efficiency. Motivated by this, we develop a new access method called the
spatial inverted index that extends the conventional inverted index to cope with
multidimensional data, and comes with algorithms that can answer nearest neighbour queries
with keywords in real time. As verified by experiments, the proposed techniques outperform the
IR2-tree in query response time significantly, often by a factor of orders of magnitude. |

Author : V. M. Dikshit |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Geological studies are requiring standard methods and procedures to acquire
precisely information. However, traditional methods might be difficult to use due to complex
topography, thick vegetation and soil cover and mountainous region in the area under study. In
this paper, we consider the application of Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery and Shuttle Radar
Topographic Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) for laterite mapping of the study
area. The accuracy assessment was based on ground control points acquired by GPS and
reference points digitized from Landsat imagery along segments of selected rivers. The area of
investigation is Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB) characterized by the common geological features
as basaltic flows and laterite cappings. The laterites were discriminated using feature extraction
workflow in ENVI EX platform. Different threshold values were used to find the most probable
areas of lateritic zones in the image. Field investigation was carried out and GPS points are
mapped to use as Ground Control Points (GCPs). The threshold values were determined from a
published geological map and known GCPs of lateritic areas with good exposure in the image.
SRTM DEM (30m resolution) was used to understand the levels of laterites and their tectonic
significance. |
