Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : The prevalence of deafness in India is fairly significant. It is the second most common cause of disability. Approximately 63 million people (6.3%) in India suffer from significant auditory loss.1 Rehabilitation of hearing impaired children in India remains a challenging task. Early detection and intervention are the mainstay of this initiative. This article does not purport to detail the clinical aspects and surgical management of hearing handicapped children. We discuss here the resources and options available in India for the education of deaf children and the role of the Government bodies in rehabilitation. Awareness about education and rehabilitation of hearing handicapped is low among the general public and even among the medical fraternity. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : This study shares our experiences in managing patients with thyroglossal cysts. These are common midline tumors of neck. Characteristically these masses move on protrusion of tongue due to their intimate relationship with hyoid bone. Adults commonly presented with this lesion eventhough literature review suggests it to be common in children. All these patients underwent surgery because of the presence of mass rather than any symptoms. All 30 patients taken up in this study had a normal functioning thyroid in the normal position in addition to the cystic lesion. |

PARATHYROID ADENOMA: IS SESTAMIBI SCINTIGRAPHY MANDATORY? |
Author : CHANDRASEKAR MAHARAJAN, SUCHARITHA VEDACHALAM |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Localization of parathyroid adenoma using 99mTc scintigraphy is the standard of care. However, of late, ultrasound has been employed to this end with increasing frequency.1, 2, 3 The employment of intra-operative PTH estimation (IOPTH) has further augmented the cure rate of hyperparathyroidism due to parathyroid adenomas.4 While ultrasound is widely available, scintigraphy is available only in tertiary health-care centres. With this background, a prospective study was conducted in the department of endocrine surgery of a tertiary care hospital to analyse the efficacy of surgeon-performed ultrasound (SPUS) in comparison to that of 99mTc Sestamibi scintigraphy in the localization of parathyroid adenomas. |

Author : SANKARANARAYANAN GOPALAKRISHNAN, PRAVEEN KUMAR |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : OBJECTIVE: In the present study we investigate the head and Neck Malignancy cases presenting to the ENT department of our Hospital, and analyze the same to give inputs as to the incidence of head and neck malignancies, the symptoms and stage of presentation, lifestyle and habits as contributory risk factors, identify ENT primary in neck secondaries, histopathological types and selection of best treatment. METHODS: Prospective analysis of 150 patients with newly diagnosed malignancies of nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynx, hypopharynx and ear. RESULTS: Most malignancies are common in patients greater than 40 years of age. 88% of cancer occur in males. Oropharynx cancer is the most common cancer in our study, with the commonest subsite as base of tongue. Supraglottic and pyriform fossa tumours are the commonest tumour in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers respectively. The most common presentation is dysphagia. Synergistic effect of smoking and alcohol is seen in 50% of patients. Most of the cases were seen in stage III and IV except glottis cancer which is predominantly seen in stage I, almost all cases were squamous cell carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The results of our study were in conformity with other similar studies. In larynx, Supraglottic was more common as opposed to glottis in certain western studies. Analysis of various factors helps in early diagnosis and management. |
