| OUR EXPERIENCES ON URGENT ABDOMINAL RELAPAROTOMIES | Author : BULENT CALIK, OMER ENGIN, AYVAZ ULAS URGANCI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Objectives of this study were to evaluate the reasons and outcomes of urgent abdominal relaparotomies.Data on patient demographics, details of the initial operation, indications for relaparotomy, complication and mortality rates were collected in 5806 patients who underwent surgery between January 2005 and October 2010.45 patients underwent relaparotomy (26 female, 19 male). The mean age was 51.1 (range 19-77) years. The initial operations in these cases were: 23 cholecystectomies (18 laparoscopic, 5 open), 7 appendectomies, 4 incisional hernias, and 3 gastrectomies. The most common reasons for relaparotomy included: peritonitis, intraabdominal abscess, and intraabdominal bleeding. The mean time interval between initial operation and relaparotomy was 8 days. The highest rate of relaparotomy rate was observed in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We suggest that the most efficient way of reducing urgent abdominal relaparotomy rate is actually "avoiding the possible complications during the first surgery". Number of education programs for using new surgical equipments and participation of these programs should be encouraged by general surgery ascociations. |
