Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : The study was conducted on selected Physiological Variables and physical variables with a purpose to find out the relationship of selected Physiological Variables and physical variables to the performance of high jump. The female high jumpers of Gujarat State were selected as subject for the study. The Physiological Variables selected for the study were Resting heart rate, Resting respiratory rate, Body composition ,Breath Holding Capacity and Physical Variables selected for the study were, Speed (50 yard dash), Agility (10 x 4 yards Shuttle run), Explosive Leg Strength (Standing Broad Jump) and flexibility (Sit and reach). Relationship of selected physiological and physical variables to performance in high jump was calculated by using Product Moment Method of Co-relation. Result of the study showed that the calculated value of “r” for Explosive Leg Strength (standing broad jump), Leg Length, Arm Length, Agility (shuttle run 4x10yard), flexibility (Sit and reach and Speed (50 Yard dash) was found to be significant at 0.05 level of confidence. Further it was evident from the table that variables resting heart rate and resting respiratory rate were found to be statistically insignificant to the performance in high jump. |

Author : Marzieh Mosleminejad,Maryam Hashemi |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Purpose: There is widespread recognition of the effect of Active lifestyle on mental health. The authors examined the relationships between physical activity and mental health. Methods: Participating in the study were 677 voluntary subjects (49% men, 51% women) with a mean age of 39 years. The short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to estimate the level of physical activity. Mental health was assessed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, the Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Logistic regression analysis was used to compare the prevalence of CES-D and GHQ cases and psychiatric disorders among the following physical activity categories: inactive, minimally active, and health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) active. Results: Association was observed between physical activity and general mental health. The optimal threshold volume for mental health benefits was of 2.5 to 7.5 h of weekly physical activity. The associations varied by gender, age, and physical health status. Individuals who engaged in the optimal amount of physical activity were more likely to have reported better mental health. Light to moderate physical activity that is performed regularly seems to be associated with more favorable mental health pattern compared with physical inactivity. No support was found for the mediating effect of AF of the physical activity mental health relationship. Conclusions: The results indicate a negative association between physical activity and depressive and anxiety disorders. |

Author : Mojtaba Dehestani Ardakani ,Davood Homanian |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Background: We investigated the effect of selective aerobic program on well-being and quality of life (QoL) in older men and women. Materials and Methods: Participating in the study were sixty elderly men and women aged 70 and older. The selective aerobic program was administrated to the individuals for 16 weeks (3 times a week) at the rehabilitation unit. Outcome measures included a short form-36 (SF-36) and well-being questionnaires. The mean ages of patients were 66.8± 5.8 years. Results and Discussions: The scores of the SF-36 scores for the participants after completion of the selective aerobic program were observed statistically significant improvement. After completion of the selective aerobic program, no statistically significant changes were determined with the well-being domains evaluation (p<0.05). Conclusion: Using selective aerobic program resulted improvement in the scores of QOL and wellbeing domains. We have shown that this selective aerobic program is effective and suitable for older people. |

Author : M. Udhaya Kumar,R. Kalidasan |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : The purpose of the study was to find out the effect of selected yoga asanas practices on fasting blood sugar, post prandial blood sugar, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. To achieve the purpose of the study thirty male type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in the agegroup of 35-60 years with diabetes of 1-10 years duration were selected from Vishwa Aysush Kendram, Therapeutic yoga centre, Salem. Patients of nephropathy, retinopathy (proliferative) and coronary artery disease or any other complications of diabetes were excluded. A series of blood glucose, lipid profile, and blood pressure tests was carried out on each participant. Fasting blood sugar and post prandial blood sugar was assessed by Glucose oxidase method – peroxidase. The high density lipoprotein assessed by phosphotungstate method, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein assessed by Friedewald-Levy-Fredrickson formula & blood pressure was assessed by blood pressure monitor .The subjects were randomly assigned into two groups of fifteen each, such as experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in the yoga asanas training for period of three month, six days per week, one session per day and each session lasted 50 minutes in the morning session. The control group maintained their daily routine activities and no special training was given. The subjects of the two groups were tested on selected variables prior and immediately after the training period. The collected data were analyzed statistically through dependent 't' test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to find out the significance difference, if any between the groups. The 0.05 level of confidence was fixed to test the level of significance difference, if any between groups. The results of the study showed that there was significant level differences exist between yoga asanas training group and control group. And also yoga asanas training group showed significant decrease on level of fasting blood sugar, post prandial blood sugar, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), systolic blood pressure & diastolic blood pressure and barring high density lipoprotein (HDL), where significant increase was observed when compared to control group |

Author : A. Sathish Kumar |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : he aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Swiss ball and crunches on balance. For the purpose of the study 30 sedentary male students from Pondicherry University were randomly selected and their age ranged between 19-22 years. Subjects were asked to assemble in the multipurpose hall in the morning hours and were given training. The subjects were hostel students and their food patterns were similar. Their life style and living condition were not taken into consideration. They were divided into three groups A, B and C with 10 subjects in each group. Group A was kept under control group (CG), group B was treated with Swiss ball training group (SBTG) and group C were given crunches exercise group (CEG). The subjects of group B and C underwent training for twelve weeks with the duration of 45 minutes. The training was started at 6.30 am and it was given for 6 days per week. The pre test and post test on balance was measured using stroke stand. The data was statistically analysed by using ANCOVA to find out the significant difference among the three groups. The finding of the study revealed that there was a beneficial effect on balance for both the experimental groups when compared to the control group. The training was more effective for SBTG than the CEG. |

NUTRITION AND AGING |
Author : Manjit,Parveen Dhayal |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract : Nutrition and bodily action are major determinants of physical condition and excellence of life; however, there exists little research focusing on determinants of these behaviours in older adults. Diseases are linked with threat of early death, weight gain, hypertension, colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and coronary heart disease. Promoting bodily action and a healthy diet thus has the possible to significantly decrease the load of disease and get better excellence of life. Currently older adults get through too few fruits and vegetables, and have lower than suggested intakes of a assortment of nutrients significant for obstacle of chronic disease. This is significant, since just as these behaviours vary according to subpopulation, it is expected that the determinants also fluctuate. An understanding of the adjustable determinants of nutrition and bodily action behaviours among older adults to take into explanation the exact life-stage context is mandatory in order to extend successful interventions to encourage health, well-being and prevent chronic disease and improve excellence of life. |
