Correlation between Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness Measured with Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography and Visual Field in Patients of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma | Author : Diksha Prakash¹, MK Singh², P Bhushan³ | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Aim: To study the correlation between retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness
measured with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT)and visual field
(VF) in patients of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
Materials and Methods:A total of 60 patients of POAG and 60 controls were studied for
a period of one year from July, 2011 to June, 2012 in the Department of
Ophthalmology, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU. All the patients and controls
underwent visual field analysis by standard automated perimetry using SITA standard
30-2 program and optic disc imaging by Cirrus SD-OCT. The relationship between RNFL
thickness and VF sensitivity, expressed as mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard
deviation (PSD) were evaluated. The association between RNFL/VF was described by
Spearman’s rho correlation coefficients.
Results: The correlation of RNFL and the VF parameters MD and PSD in normal eyes was
not significant. In POAG eyes, RNFL and both MD (R=0.925) and PSD (R=-0.879)
correlated significantly.
Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the correlation between RNFL and visual field
parameters MD and PSD in normal eyes was not significant. In POAG eyes, RNFL and
both MD and PSD correlated significantly with P <0.001. |
| Evaluation ofthe Acute Phase Reactants CRP in Unstable Angina Cases | Author : Barnali Bhattacharya1 , Narveer Singh2 , DK Sharma3 , VH Talib4 , Navneet Aggarwal5 , Rajesh Ranjan6 , SC Mohapatra | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Unstable angina, a syndrome of symptoms caused by ischemia of the heart muscles, is
both frightening and disabling and may herald acute myocardial infarction. The
immediate precipitating events of the atherosclerotic plaque responsible for that
critical degree of ischemia resulting in the syndrome of unstable angina areprogression
of atherosclerosis platelet aggregation, thrombosis and vasospasm. Acute phase
reactants are proteins in the plasma whose levels increase during acute inflammatory
states or secondary to certain types of tissue damage. A cross-sectional descriptive
study was done in Safdarjung Hospital on 40 subjects and controls to establish the
acute phase reactants CRP in unstable angina cases and their relationships. In our study,
we found that CRP levels are increased in cases as compared to controls, thus showing
a direct correlation. |
| Urinary Iodine Concentration among Primary School Children in the Mewat Area of Haryana | Author : VP Gupta1 , Puja Bharat Patel2 , Navneet Aggarwal3 , Bharat Paul4 , SC Mohapatra5 | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Iodine is one of the essential micronutrients required for the normal mental and
physical well being of human beings. Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) has been
considered as major public health problem in India including Mewat. The present goiter
survey was done in Mewat district with the objective to determine the median urinary
iodine concentration in a sample of children, to assess the level of iodine in salt samples
at the household levels. A total of 210 urine samples were collected and tested for
urinary iodine excretion. A total of 150 salt samples were tested. These samples were
tested on the spot with an MIB kit. Median iodine concentration of the study
population was more than 100 µg/L in 83.33% of children. Thus, a mild deficiency was
found in 11.43% of the children, moderate in 4.29%, and severe in 0.95% of the
children.Majority (86%) of salt samples were adequately iodized, i.e., having >15 ppm,
while 14% were non-iodized. |
| Misplaced IUCD in Vesico-Vaginal Space Removed Vaginally | Author : Ammbalal Gurram | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) are safe, effective and are amongst the most
commonly used forms of contraception used worldwide. Few cases have been reported
with misplaced Copper-T. Misplaced IUCD is the condition when the tail of IUCD is not
seen through the cervical OS. IUCD migration subsequent to uterine perforation is an
uncommon but serious complication. Incidence of perforation varies from 1-3 per 1000
insertions. Here is a case report of a 24-year-old woman with misplaced Copper-T.
Ultrasound and X-ray revealed the presence of Copper-T in vesico-vaginal space. Vaginal
removal of Copper-T was done. |
