Abstract :Background and aims: Hypothyroid patients are usually follow-up in internal diseases with endocrinology and metabolism clinics in Turkey. The aim in this study is to determine the differences between these two clinics in terms of reaching the target.
Methods: 310 patients with hypothyroid that are under levothyroxine sodium treatment are involved this study. These 268 women and 42 men are applied to Atatürk University Medical School in 2015. Their TSH level are recorded during the application and used a sensitive immunometric assay for TSH measurement. TSH<4 mIU/L is considered as achievement of treatment goals and TSH=4 is not. Data analysis are made by SPSS-20 and they evaluated regarding “man whitney u” and “chi-square” test. |

Study of Resting Energy Expenditure and Weight Changes during Pregnancy |

Abstract :In the present study, we have followed 4 pregnant women during pregnancy. The participants measured their resting energy expenditure (REE), weight, and activity, and recorded caloric intake. REE was measured with a mobile indirect calorimeter, BreezingTM on a weekly basis, and used to determine total energy expenditure (TEE) and daily caloric intake needs. The measured REE profiles indicated individual patterns in metabolic rate changes across pregnancy that could not be predicted by any known REE equation. The study outcomes suggest that the use of a mobile indirect calorimeter in conjunction with weight and physical activity measures allowed for the accurate estimate of caloric needs for pregnant women. The actual caloric intake (BreezingTM) was compared with the self-reported caloric intake and demonstrated to have non-significant differences in three of the four cases, and a significant difference in one of the four cases. In addition, the participants reported that knowledge gained from tracking health parameters positively affected weight gain during pregnancy and helped to gain within a healthy weight range. Furthermore, all the participants were able to fully recover their pre-pregnancy weight within the year following birth. |

Abstract :Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has become a world problem that seriously affected quality of life in concerned population; however, studies concerning its etiology and therapeutics are not so satisfactory. Hyperglycemia and oxidative stress damage are two hallmarks that aggravate the progression of each other. During this process, there will generate amounts of by-products, among which advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been demonstrated to play a pivotal role in promoting the beginning and progression of DM. AGEs may interact with its receptor named RAGE and induce a series of pathological effects, such as oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation etc., and form the so-called “hyperglycemia memory”. Comparison of Anti-Glycation Capacity of Two New Purple-Colored- Leaf Tea Cultivars with an Ordinary Green-Colored-Leaf Tea Cultivar in Taiwan |

Abstract :The special tea varieties with purple- or red-colored leaves have been successfully bred in Taiwan and their health benefits are needed to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical content, the antioxidant properties, and the anti-glycation capacities of two new purple-colored-leaf tea cultivars (TTES No.113 & 117) and one of the most cultivated teas in Taiwan (TTES No.18). Green tea made from the two purple-colored-leaf tea cultivars, especially the TTES No.117 had significantly higher phenolic, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and catechin content than the TTES No.18. The purple-colored-leaf tea also had higher antioxidant activities including ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). The formation of fluorescent advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and non-fluorescent AGEs (N?-carboxymethyllysine; CML) in a glucose/ BSA system were significantly inhibited by teas. The inhibitory capacities of teas on fluorescent AGEs and CML were correlated with phenolics or flavonoids, rather than catechins or anthocyanins. These results implied that the potent antiglycation capacity of purple-colored-leaf tea was primarily attributed to the total phenolics. These findings highlight that the potential use of purple-colored-leaf tea bred in Taiwan as a functional beverage for preventing diabetic complications. |

Abstract :Diabetes is a multifactorial of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels which occur as a result in the body’s inability to produce and/or use insulin. Both type 1 and 2 diabetes are thought to be complex disease which developed by the influence of many susceptibility and protective genes, in relation with negative and positive environmental factors. Though type 1 diabetes is distinguished by common beta-cell loss which is mediated by an autoimmune process to extent that all patients with overt type 1 diabetes will essentially need insulin. Multiple genetic factors have been connected to type 1 diabetes which can define individualized plan for type 1 prevention. This review has focused on type 2 diabetes (T2D) which has become more and more a challenging health burden as a result of its degree of morbidity, mortality and heightened prevalence worldwide. |
