Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the common causes of disability. Long-term effects of early to moderate
KOA can be managed through non-surgical interventions. But due to overcrowding in Orthopaedic OPDs,
doctors don’t have enough time for explaining non pharmacological interventions (NPIs) in detail to KOA
patients. Hence, desired impact of NPIs is not evident among KOA patients. This study elaborates the
degree of patient centered approach adopted during doctor patient interactions in the Orthopedics OPD
of a tertiary care hospital of India. The study was conducted in 2012-2015. Eligible KOA patients (N=123)
were divided into two groups for the RCT. The patients aged 40-65 years of either gender without significant
deformity or co-morbidities needing surgery (e.g. meniscus tears etc) were enrolled. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :hospital.
Design: Retrospective secondary data analysis of patients who underwent cataract surgery from 1 January
2015 to 31 December 2017.
Method: All adult patients diagnosed with cataract and posted for cataract surgery from 1 January 2015
to 31 December 2017 and were cancelled on the day or 24 hours before the intended procedure were
included in the study. The causes for cancellation were retrieved from the patient files. Pareto analysis
was done to find out the most common causes for the cancellation.
Results: 14113 patients were posted for cataract surgery from 1st January 2015 to 31st December 2017,
of which 13265 patient underwent cataract surgery while 848 patients were cancelled within 24 hours of
scheduled start time due to different causes. The cancellation rate for on the day cancellation of cataract
surgery for a peripheral eye hospital is found to be 6%.
Conclusion: Systemic illnesses especially uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension are the most common
causes for on the day cancellation of cataract surgery in a peripheral eye hospital.

Dose Reference Levels for Pediatric Thorax CT: Can Image Quality Be Achieved While Maintaining Dose Reduction for Different Body Mass Indices? |
Author : Shahed Khan1 , Eleonora Santos2 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Organ doses were calculated for diagnostic thorax CT, using data for 573 male Bangladeshi children from
0-10 years old, accounting for age and BMI. We have computed organ doses for an average male adult
(170 cm*70 kg) undergoing a thorax CT examination using the ImPACT dose calculator and constructed
ratios of organ dose to CTDIvol as a function of location of organs in the thorax, using a tube voltage of
120 kV for Siemens 64 slice CT scanner. BMIs are modelled as specific diameter water cylinders to obtain
the factors for organ doses relative to the organ doses received by a reference adult. Results show that
age operates a reduction in absorbed dose by a factor ranging from 0.33-0.79, which are consistent with
other reference studies. Conversely, an increase of 1 BMI unit implies an increase in absorbed dose of up
to 13% to maintain the quality standards of diagnostic imaging. |

Healthcare Data Utilization for the Betterment of Mankind - An Overview of Big Data Concept in Healthcare |
Author : Radhika Kunnavil1 , Nandagudi Srinivasa Murthy2 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Health Information plays a vital role in the healthcare delivery system. When Informatics is applied to the
field of healthcare for the better management of healthcare and patient outcome is called as ‘Medical
Informatics’. The aim of modern health care system is to provide optimal health care through the meaningful
use of medical informatics which has led to a greater demand for more elaborate and widespread data.
In this context, the term big data evolved in health care setting. Big data is the data which constitutes
of three ‘V’ viz. Volume, Velocity and Variety. However, utilization of big data requires good healthcare
service management system, proper planning, and expertise in the analysis. This article is intended to
highlight the importance of big data in medical informatics for better healthcare delivery and to examine
some opportunities, applications and challenges. In this article, we discuss the applications of big data in
healthcare, an overview of the techniques and tools in big data analysis and challenges in the application
of big data in healthcare. The article is also intended to highlight on the importance of the proper use of
data for delivering better health care. |

Homelessness: An Emerging Threat |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Homelessness is a global burden. It is estimated that 100 million people are homeless worldwide according
to United Nation estimates in the year of 2005. It is a major issue in developing nation such as India. The
2011 census counts there are 449,761 houseless households/ families and 17,73,040 homeless people in
India - 52.9 % in urban areas, and 47.1% in rural areas. Homelessnesss is multifactorial in origin. Some of
common reasons are poverty, drug addiction, natural disaster and war, family problem and unemployment.
Homeless people are very fragile, physically and mentally, they prone to victim of physical and social assault.
We need to recognize homelessness as a major public health problem and attempt to target this group for
special care in order to promote equity in health system as part of Sustainable Development Goals. The
Government should undertake physical upgradation of informal settlements including different types of
slum areas; unidentified, identified, recognised, notified and unauthorised housing accompanied by the
providing access to roads and basic amenities like electricity, water supply and sanitation. |
