Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :A retrospective study to assess the indications of cesarean section (C-section) using Modified Cesarean
Indication Classification System (CICS) among health facilities in selected areas of New Delhi was conducted.
C-section is one of the commonly performed surgical procedures in obstetric and is certainly one of the
oldest operations in surgery. Recently, there has been a dramatic rise in the C-section rate (CSR) worldwide
as primary cesarean deliveries contributed most to the overall CSR. The main aim of the study was to find
out the number of C-sections and the indications based on absolute and non-absolute indications by using
modified cesarean indication classification system. As the nursing perspective about the hospital birth, nurses
are the major and central part for the management of labor and delivery units. Even nurses are the ones
who are largely responsible for the mothers in their antenatal, intranatal and postnatal period. Nurses are
the administrators and decision makers and can assess the outcome of second stage of labor, and they can
assess for indications of C-section |

Author : Celine Panmei1 , Bindu Shaiju2 , Sheny Daniel3 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Violence toward mental health staff has been receiving national attention in the face of diminishing
resources to treat what appears to be an increasingly violent patient population. Assaults by psychiatric
patients against mental healthcare providers are both a reality and a concern as the effects of violence
can be devastating to the victim. These victims suffer from many of the same physical and psychological
sequels as victims of a natural disaster or street crime. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence
of patient-inflicted violence and knowledge of staff nurses regarding management of violent behavior in
psychiatric wards. A quantitative approach with a descriptive survey and cross-sectional design was used
in the study. 60 staff nurses working in psychiatric wards of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and
Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Manipur, was the sample selected. A structured tool and
a structured knowledge questionnaire were used to assess the occurrence of patient-inflicted violence
and the knowledge of the staff nurses regarding management of violent behavior in psychiatric wards.
The data gathered was analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result of the
study was that majority of the staff nurses had experienced more of verbal abuse than physical abuse from
the psychiatric patients and also had an average knowledge about the management of violent behaviors
in psychiatric wards. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most devastating medical, social and economic
problems for patients and their families in our country. Patients undergoing hemodialysis are repeatedly
exposed to pain from approximately 300 punctures per year. Therefore, pain assessment and management
are considered as the nursing priority and one of the important aspects of clinical nursing and one of
the therapies to reduce pain is cryotherapy. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to evaluate the
effectiveness of cryotherapy on pain during arteriovenous fistula puncturing among hemodialysis patients
in the dialysis unit of Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.
Methods: The research approach adopted was experimental research approach using quasi-experimental
research design. The independent variable of the study was cryotherapy and the dependent variable was
pain during AV fistula puncture. The present study was conducted in the dialysis unit of Safdarjung Hospital,
New Delhi. The sample consisted of patients with CKD receiving hemodialysis through AV fistula on their
arm. The selection of the sample was done by non-probability purposive sampling technique followed by
random assignment of 60 subjects to experimental and control groups. Three tools were utilized to collect
the data.
Results: Results revealed that the mean pain score in experimental and control groups were 7.7 and 7.8
respectively, but in experimental group the mean pain score continued to decrease, which shows reduction
of pain in experimental group as evident from mean pain scores of 7.7 and 2.5 on 1st and 7th day respectively.
The mean pain score in control group does not show any major changes in score, indicating no significant
decrease in pain score.
Conclusion: It was concluded that cryotherapy was able to reduce the intensity of pain due to AV fistula
puncture in hemodialysis patients. It can be used as a non-pharmacological intervention and is a simple
and inexpensive therapy. |

A Study to Assess the Awareness regarding Legislation of Abortion among Doctors, Staff Nurses, Pharmacists and Women in Selected Areas of New Delhi |
Author : Rana Kamar1 , Manju Chhugani2 , Merlin Mary James3 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Unsafe abortions have devastating effects on women’s health. Despite the liberalization of abortion services
since the enactment of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, the rate of unsafe abortion is
high in developing countries. This has contributed to high maternal mortality rates throughout India,
where rates of maternal deaths attributed to complications from unsafe abortions are as high as 8%. A
descriptive survey design using purposive sampling technique was used. The sample size for the study was
400 (100 doctors, 100 staff nurses, 100 pharmacists and 100 women). The study findings revealed that out
of 100 women, 27 had used self-medication, of whom 18 had complications like excessive bleeding and
pain after self-medication. Most (41%) of the women were highly aware regarding legislation of abortion.
There was a significant relationship between awareness regarding legislation of abortion and education of
women. Majority (81%) of the doctors were highly aware regarding legislation of abortion and 19 doctors
were moderately aware regarding the legislation of abortion and there was not a significant relationship
between awareness and age of doctors. Majority (57%) of staff nurses was highly aware and 38% staff
nurses were moderately aware, and 5% were least aware regarding the legislation of abortion. Majority
(42%) of pharmacists was highly aware and 42% pharmacists were moderately aware, and 16% were least
aware regarding the legislation. |

A Comparative Study to Assess the Competency among Nurses in Giving Neonatal Skin Care in Selected Government and Private Hospitals in Delhi and to Disseminate TNAI Guidelines 2017 on Neonatal Skin Care |
Author : Shweta1 , Bindu Shaiju2 , Anjali Kaushik3 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Neonatal skin care is an important clinical concern for nurses who care for newborns, including well, fullterm,
healthy premature and extremely premature neonates. Skin performs a vital role in the newborn
period. It provides a protective barrier that assists in the prevention of infection, facilitates thermoregulation
and helps control insensible water loss and electrolyte balance. Other functions include tactile sensation
and protection against toxins. Routine care practices including bathing, application of monitoring devices,
intravenous (IV) catheter insertion and removal, tape application, and exposure to potentially toxic substances
disrupt the normal barrier function and predispose both premature and term newborn to skin injury. The
skin of the full-term newborn is coated with vernix caseosa, a cheese-like substance that contains sebum
from sebaceous glands, broken-off lanugo and desquamated cells from amnion, as well as water. Skin care
practices play an important role in the health of well newborns and hospitalized neonates. Fortunately, for
many aspects of neonatal skin care, there exit evidence or consensus-based recommendations to guide
best practices. |
