FLORAL BIOLOGY OF SYAGRUS OLERACEA CF (MART.) BECC IN BARIRI PARK, PARA MINAS CITY, MG, BRAZIL | Author : duardo José Azevedo Correa | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :S. oleracea is a species belonging to the family Arecaceae, is popularly known as guariroba and originally from Brazil. It is located in the tropics, lying naturally composing the vegetation of forests in several states, such as Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Bahia, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo and Paraná. Pollination is the process by which male reproductive cells of higher plants (pollen grains) produced in the anthers of flowers, are transferred to the female recipient (stigma) of the same plant or plant of the same species. Through this process, the pollen sowing the flower stigma, beginning the formation of the pollen tube, which will culminate with the fertilization of the egg cell. Thus the study of floral biology of this species and other justified by the importance of this process in reproductive propagation of species. Excessive use of pesticides in agriculture has led to numerous endangered pollinators become the pollen grain process for unviable egg cell, which may jeopardize the survival of many species. This work aims to study the reproductive biology of the species Syagrus oleracea cf and its floral morphology in order to provide a basis for understanding the pollination process of this species. Its main objectives Identify potential pollinators of S. oleracea; Determine schedules and frequency of pollinator species visitation; Featuring floral, external and internal morphology of S. oleracea; Determine the presence of relevant substances and structures to their relationship to pollinators. |

| CERRADO BRAZILIAN BIOME: CHARACTERIZATION AND IMPORTANCE | Author : duardo José Azevedo Corrêa, José Norberto Lobato, Adriano Guimarães Parreira,Andreia Fonseca Silva | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The increasing demand for food and energy has over years promoted an intense intervention in natural environments, mainly with incorporation of new Cerrado’s areas in this productive process. Thus, new agricultural frontiers have been opened and, often, without consistent study about the consequences changing in use of these environments. The agricultural frontier advance, especially small farmers, has not yet been accompanied efficiently by technology advancement, capable of producing greater productivity in its arable land. In this way, it is observed the need of action in Command and Control Organs, aiming to promote a micro-zoning based on skills and vulnerabilities of each location. |
| ASSESSMENT OF POST HARVEST LOSSES OF FRUITS DURING MARKETING IN OSOGBO METROPOLIS, OSUN STATE, NIGERIA | Author : Oludare S. DURODOLA, 2WAHAB Munir Jamiu, 2IBIKUNLE Damilola Rashidat | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This survey was carried out to examine the post harvest losses in fruits production in Osogbo Metropolis of Osun State. Simple random sampling was used to select sixty (60) fruit marketers, fifteen each from the four selected communities to constitute sample for the study. Primary data were collected from the fruit marketers using a structured interview schedule. Data from the study was analyzed using descriptive analysis. The constraints of high cost of transportation ranked first and this shows that it is a major constraint to fruit marketing, other major constraints are perishable nature of fruits, insufficient knowledge on fruit handling/storage, insufficient capital/poor credit availability. The minor constraints are high post-harvest losses and poor demand of fruits by consumers. The problem of insufficient knowledge and skill on handling and storage of fruits was suffered by a high percentage of fruit marketers which in turn leads to high fruit losses. This study recommends that Government and other private investors should invest in post-harvest processing technologies and establish processing industries to facilitate fruit processing. Fruit marketers should be adequately trained in the areas of fruit handling and storage by extension agents. |
| COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FRUITS’ POST HARVEST LOSSES AND THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC LEVEL OF FRUITS’ MARKETERS IN OSOGBO METROPOLIS OF OSUN STATE, NIGERIA | Author : Oludare S. DURODOLA, 2WAHAB Munir Jamiu, 2IBIKUNLE Damilola Rashidat | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This study was carried out to compare the relationship between Fruits’ post harvest losses and the socio-economic level of fruits’ marketers in Osogbo metropolis of Osun state. Simple random sampling was then used to select sixty (60) fruit marketers, fifteen each from the four selected communities to constitute sample for the study. Primary data were collected from the fruit marketers using a structured interview schedule. Data from the study was analyzed using descriptive analysis. Most of the fruit marketers are females, middle aged, married women, with no formal education. 27.0% of the respondents earn between ?300,000-?434,000 per annum from fruit marketing; the result revealed that 38.3% of the fruit marketers incur losses of between ?600- ?6,500 per annum. There is a significant relationship between the socio-economic characteristics and the level of post-harvest losses incurred in fruit marketing in the study area. This study recommended that Fruit marketers should be encouraged to join various cooperative societies for easy accessibility to credit facilities and education on better marketing strategies. |
| Effects of Goko Cleanser Herbal Mixture on the Microarchitecture of the Liver of Adult Female Wistar Rats | Author : Onyejike Darlington Nnamdi | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Medicinal plants have shown to posses some biological constituents that have significant effect in man. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of herbal mixture (Goko Cleanser) on the kidney of adult female Wistar rats. A total of twenty five animals weighing 160g - 280g were used. The rats were randomly selected into five groups of five (5) each. The groups were designed as group 1-5. Group 1 served as control group, group 2 took 1000mg/kg of the herbal mixture, group 3 took 1500mg/kg of the herbal mixture, group 4 took 2000mg/kg and group 5 took 4000mg/kg. The results show that Goko Cleanser herbal mixture possesses tannin, saponin and flavonoids as its phytochemical constituents. The food intake was measured daily. Result from food intake in week 1 showed that there was no significant (P>0.05) increase in the test groups when compared to the control group. In week 2, there was significant (P<0.05) decrease in group 4 and 5, while there was no significant (P>0.05) increase in group 2; and no significant (P>0.05) decrease in group 3 compared to the control group. In week 3, there was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in food intake in the treated groups when compared to the control group; and there was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight in groups 2, 4 and 5 while group 3 had no significant (P>0.05) decrease. Histopathological findings of the liver showed a lobular inflammation, mild necrosis and some mild haemorrhage in all the test groups when compared to the control group. Hence, the results from this study show that Goko Cleanser herbal mixture possesses dose-dependent toxic effect on the Liver. |
