Stages of creating the new high-yielding bread winter wheat variety ‘MIP Valensiia’ | Author : ?. ?. ???????, ?. ?. ?????????, ?. ?. ???????, ?. ?. ???????, ?. ?. ??????? | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To substantiate the main stages of creating a highly productive ‘MIP Valensiia’ variety using induced mutagenesis.
Methods. Field, laboratory, statistical ones. Seeds of first-generation hybrids were treated with mutagenic factors of chemical NEU (nitrozoethyl urea), NMU (nitrozomethyl urea), DAB (1,4-bis-diazoacetylbutane), DMS (dimethyl sulfate), HA (hydroxylamine) and physical nature – gamma rays 100 and 150 Gr.
Results. For creation of the winter wheat genotypes and increasing the incidence of plants with improved valuable properties, hybridization was carried out each year, which components of crossing differed morphologically. During the years of research in the nurseries F3M2–F5M4, the best offspring were selected. On the basis of phenological observations, biometric data and visual assessments of grain, the most number of offspring forms were obtained in 2006 (2877 pcs), 2007 (2237 pcs), 2009 (2196 pcs), 2015 (2133 pcs), the least ones – in 2011 (448 pcs). Conducting such studies during the last 10 years has contributed to the creation of a number of valuable genotypes, lines and varieties. As a result of breeding work with hybrid-mutant populations, a number of lines have been identified that are currently being investigated during competitive trial, in agronomic experiment to determine the response of genotype to sowing dates and predecessors. Thus, the lines ‘Erythrospermum 37328’, ‘Erythrospermum 37337’ exceeded the standard by 0.9 t/ha and 1.12 t/ha. Bread winter wheat variety ‘MIP Valensiia’ (‘Erythrospermum 37328’) has been created by the method of individual selection of spike in F3M4 from a hybrid-mutant population of such varieties as ‘Yermak’ / ‘Demetra’ + NMU 0,005%. The variety is recommended to be entered in the State Register of plant varieties suitable for dissemination in Ukraine in 2018. The results of the State variety testing in Ukraine in 2017 indicate that in the Forest-Steppe zone the highest yield was obtained in Cherkasy (9.11 t/ha) and Vinnytsia Oblast state centers of plant varieties examination (OSCPVE) (9.08 t/ha). In the Polissia zone, the maximum yield of the variety was in Zhytomyr (6.99 t/ha) and Ivano-Frankivsk (6.94 t/ha) OSCPVE. In the Steppe zone, the highest yield of the ‘MIP Valensiia’ variety was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk (7.39 t/ha) OSCPVE.
Conclusions. Involving modern breeding methods, experimental mutagenesis in particular, allows to obtain mutant forms and varieties that can be used in winter wheat breeding and production. |
| Indices for grain morphometric assessment of hexaploid wheat species | Author : Rozhkov, R. V. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. The article presents approaches to the effective use of the indices for grain morphometric assessment of hexaploid wheat species. The purpose of our research was to study the morphometric parameters (length, width and thickness) of grains and develop effective indices for grain parameters: roundness and size.
Methods. Four hexaploid samples of wheat were under research – two spring soft wheat varieties, one sample of the species Triticum petropavlovskyi (the most large-grained species among hexaploid) and the last one represented species T. spherococcum (has a spherical grain form). Grains’ morphometric indices were measured with the help of caliper and 10–20 plants were examined of each 2012, 2014, 2016 yield. The reliability of the obtained results was estimated in accordance with standard statistical processing.
Results. The introduced indexes had stable meanings along the years and practically did not depend on the conditions of cultivation, which makes them reliable for wheat samples evaluation, based on grain morphometric analysis. The clear tendency towards the difference between the indices of the first and the second grains in the spike was determined. Therefore, in order to optimize the number of measurements, we recommend to analyze grains of the second flower, where the grain characteristics are better expressed.
Conclusions. So, the study showed the efficiency in use of our indices to assess the shape and size of grains. The indices use will facilitate the effective selection of grain samples with the optimal parameters in the selection process and can be used in the special techniques development for the variety protection. |
| Seasonal development of the genus Heuchera L. plant varieties in the conditions of the Right-coast Forest-Steppe of Ukraine | Author : Andrukh, N. A. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To study the seasonal cycle of development for introduced genus Heuchera L. plant varieties.
Methods. Phenological, biometrical and analytical.
Results. Based on the results of phenological observations, it was marked that the plants of Heuchera genus of the Right-coast Forest-Steppe of Ukraine pass through the all stages of seasonal development cycle. It was revealed that the phases of green shoots growing and blossoming are considerably prolonged. The phases of budding, blossoming and fruiting take place simultaneously. The studied plants, according to the nature of the development rhythm, are classified as a phenological “summer-winter green” type with winter dormancy, which determines the duration of their “decorativeness”.
Conclusions. It was found out that the vegetation period for Heuchera species lasts 216–232 days. The beginning (I–II decade of May), duration (26–43 days) of the blossoming phase and phenological spectra analysis of the genus Heuchera varieties show that the rhythm of their development responds to the climatic conditions of the Right-coast Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. The decorativeness of introduced Heuchera varieties is evident from the budding to the end of the vegetation. So, they are able to provide a long decorative effect from March to early November according to different types of planting. As the fruiting phase is available, including the fruit-setting and viable seeds ripening, it is an absolute argument for selection work fulfillment. |
| On streamlining the Ukrainian names of plants. Information 10. Rules of Plant Nomenclature, Taxonomy, and Cultonomy | Author : Mezhenskyj, V. M. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To develop rules for Plant Nomenclature, Taxonomy and Cultonomy.
Results. The regulations of “International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants”, “International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants”, “International Code of Phylogenetic Nomenclature”, and “International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties” are applied for plant name standardization in different spheres. The Ukrainian Orthography, which regulates the Ukrainian language including the writing of plant names, does not fully cover the whole range of issues in this area. Different approaches of botanist and philologists to ordering, according to Ukrainian plants nomenclature and spelling rules, demand coordination. The draft of the “Rules of Plant Nomenclature, Taxonomy and Cultonomy” for ordering and harmonization of Ukrainian phytonomy is offered.
Conclusions. The draft of “Rules of Plant Nomenclature, Taxonomy and Cultonomy” is the significant step in the matter of plant denomination and plant names usage in scientific and economic activities |
| A new variety of soft winter wheat ‘Horlytsia myronivska’ | Author : Kolomiiets, L. A., Humeniuk, A. V., Derhach?v, A. L., Koliadenko, S. S. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To consider the stages of creation and characteristics of a new variety ‘Horlytsia myronivska’ for biological properties and economic characters.
Methods. Field, mathematical and statistical ones.
Results. The variety was created by the method of hybridization from crossing the varieties of ‘Demeter’ and ‘Krymka odeska’. Genealogy of the variety includes the genotypes of varieties of the Western Europe ‘NS-2699’ (Yugoslavia), ‘Sadovo syper’ (Bulgaria), ‘MV-103’ (Hungary), ‘Moscowska 60’ (Russia) and bred by the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat (MIW) ‘Lutescens 10795’ (synonym of ‘Mironivska 27’). It belongs to erythrospermum subvariety. During studies in ??W and establishments of the Ukrainian Institute of Variety Examination it was established that the variety is resistant to lodging, shedding and drought. Over the years of investigation, the variety showed resistance to powdery mildew and brown rust (8.3–8.7 points), root rot (8.1–8.4 points) and fusarium spike (8.1–8.7 points). The productivity potential of the variety is high (10.6–10.9 t/ha). Wheat is valuable for indicators of grain quality. The best predecessors for the variety are corn for green fodder, green-manured fallow (mustard) and peas. During sowing on September 25 and October 5, the variety showed significant results and the highest advantages for all predecessors, with the exception of maize for silage.
Conclusions. It is established that the variety had a set of economic characters and properties, due to which it is genetically able to compensate the high production costs for its growing. |
| Symbiotic description for alfalfa (Medicago L.) genotypes and their variability | Author : Vozhehova, R. A., Tyshchenko, O. D., Tyshchenko, A. V. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To make an assessment of the alfalfa selective material according to the intensity of the nodule-forming process and find the correlation with nitrogenase activity. Identify the best genotypes for use in practical breeding.
Methods. Vegetative, statistical.
Results. Conventional varieties of alfalfa according to the number and size of root nodules were analyzed. The variations in the number of nodules were described. In selections, the amount of medium and large nodules (1 mm and bigger in size) increases and the bacterial mass increases too in comparison with the initial forms. Inoculated plants formed 7.6–44.5% more nodules, in comparison to the reference group. Varieties differ in the number of formed nodules of 1 mm and bigger in size with a variation from 19.3 to 82.9%. The nodules on the root system have specific locations. Interest for further selection related to populations: ‘Unitro’, ‘Dobir ? 3 – Spr. 2’, ‘Dobir ? 5 – ?s.-2007’, which formed 81.2–99.4% of medium and large nodules and 22.7–27.3% of them were located on the main root. The intensity of the nodule-forming process is determined by the degree of root system development. With the increasing of the root system power, the more nodules are formed on it. The level of nitragenase activity depends on the developmental capacity of the alfalfa root system, total number of nodules in sizes of 1–2 mm and > 2 mm.
Conclusions. It is established that the size of the symbiotic apparatus depends not only on the number of nodules, but on its mass too. The intensity of the nodule-forming process is determined by the capacity of the root system. With the increase in the volume of the root system, as a result, more nodules are formed. High correlation coefficients were found between the level of nitrogenase activity, the root system thickness and the total number of nodules on alfalfa plants, including fractions 1–2 mm, > 2 mm. |
| Evaluation of genetic components and combining ability for spike length in winter six-rowed barley under conditions of Forest-Steppe of Ukraine | Author : Hudzenko, V. M., Polischuk, T. P. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To reveal plant breeding and genetic characteristics of winter six-row barley varieties by spike length and to identify effective sources of high combining ability under conditions of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine.
Methods. The research was carried out at the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat of NAAS in 2012/13–2014/15 on winter six-rowed barley varieties ‘Paladin Myronivskyi’, ‘Zherar’, ‘Selena Star’, ‘Strimkyi’, ‘Cartel’, ‘Existens’, ‘Cinderella’ as well as on F1 derived from crossing them at complete diallel scheme (7´7). Analysis of variance, combining ability and genetic parameters were calculated in accordance to conventional methods (B. A. Dospekhov, 1985; M. A. Fedin et al., 1980).
Results. The significant differences in spike length were revealed, which allowed to estimate combining ability and to calculate parameters of genetic variation. The high effects of general combining ability (GCA) were peculiar to the ‘Strimkyi’ (gi = 0.64–0.76) and ‘Paladin Myronivskyi’ (gi = 0.34–0.53) varieties along the years. Positive GCA effects of middle and of high levels were marked for the variety ‘Existens’ (gi = 0.07–0.23). Graphical analysis and parameters of genetic variation showed the presence of intra-locus overdominance in 2012/13 ( = 1.16) and partial dominance in 2013/14 ( = 0.69) and in 2014/15 ( = 0.82). Significant expression of epistasis was not detected. During the years, dominance was directed on external traits increasing and was under control of dominant alleles (effects).
Conclusions. Breeding and genetic traits of spike length of winter barley varieties in scheme of complete diallel crosses were revealed for the first time under the conditions of the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. The variations in genetic control of the trait from overdominance in dry 2012/13 to the partial dominance in wet 2013/14 and 2014/15 were revealed. ‘Strimkyi’, ‘Paladin Myronivskyi’, ‘Existens’ varieties were identified with increased GCA for spike length. These varieties have high value in breeding. |
| Models of corn hybrids of different maturity groups FAO 150–490 for irrigated conditions | Author : Lavrynenko, Yu. O.; Marchenko, T. Yu.; Nuzhna, M. V.; Bodenko, N. A. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To substantiate morphophysiological and heterozosis models of high yield hybrids of maize FAO 150–490 for irrigation conditions and to create appropriate genotypes with specific adaptability to agroecological factors.
Methods. The general scientific, special selection genetic, computational and comparative research methods were used.
Results. The results of long-term study of maize hybrid models of different maturity groups within the conditions of irrigation are presented. The basic parameters of maize hybrid models of different FAO groups were determined. The parameters of heterozosis models are determined and the lines with high combining ability were created, which are involved in the pedigree of early-ripening, early ripe medium, mid-ripening, middle-late and late groups of maturity of newly created hybrids. The results of the new hybrids response to irrigation methods and regimes are presented. It was found that FAO 190 hybrids have stable yields independently of different irrigation modes. The use of these hybrids is appropriate for the water-saving irrigation modes on irrigated lands with a low groundwater line. Among the middle-hybrids (FAO 300–390) the strong reaction in hybrids growing environmental gradient has appeared. The yield of this hybrids type falls dramatically under water-saving irrigation modes. There were defined corn hybrids of intensive type ‘Arabat’, ‘DN Getera’, ‘DN Anchlag’, ‘DN Rava’ in medium-late hybrid group which provide corn yield of 15–17 t/ha during the drip irrigation and sprinkling irrigation within Ingulets and Kahovsky irrigated lands. There is no practical need to grow this type of hybrids on irrigated lands with a low groundwater line and water-saving condition as far as this type of technology leads to the strong yield loss therefore they become non-competitive with modern FAO 190–290 hybrids.
Conclusions. There new innovative FAO maize hybrids 150–490 were created for irrigated cultivation on the south of Ukraine, which are possessing a complex of economic and valuable features and are able to form high yields during the irrigation (11–17 t/ha). The differentiating ability of the environment within high soil fertility is more than in close-extreme conditions where environmental factors cause a leveling effect on the phenotype’s signs implementation of FAO 400–490 hybrids. The morpho-biological features that determine corn yield are steadily implemented only at high soil fertility. For this reason the phenotype selection is reliable only in favorable conditions. The flexible hybrids adapted to a wide range of external conditions within irrigation’s intensive technologies give way to genotypes productivity with a narrow adaptability. |
| The soft winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeding for extra-strong baking quality identification and development | Author : Lytvynenko, M. A.; Golyb, E. A.; Khomenko, T. M. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To work out the theoretical principles of soft winter wheat breeding for grain baking quality improvement up to the extra-strong level and initial varieties breeding for germoplasm development.
Methods. Interspecies hybridization, field tests, laboratory baking quality test, analysis.
Results. Rising yields and better baking quality of the soft winter wheat varieties were achieved as a result of varieties replacement on the South Ukraine. Winter wheat specific response to the different dose of nitrogen fertilizer application has been a characteristic feature of the different variety types (tall extensive, mild intensive, semi half intensive, dwarf high intensive). It demonstrated increased productivity and also changes in gluten characteristics – tenacity, extensibility and elasticity. On the base of these data a new approach to the bread winter wheat varieties development with extra-strong baking quality characteristics was offered. Criteria for the extra-strong varieties group and official introduction of this group are proposed for consideration. Effectiveness and ways of extra-strong genotypes selection among hybrid population of high baking quality were under research.
Conclusions. The main criteria for determining selection of extra-strong bread winter wheat varieties are the following: grain protein content (no less than 14%); alveograph value – 500 units and higher; optimal ratio of gluten characteristics – tenacity/extensibility ~1; certain biochemical markers of genetic quality level and resistance to sprouting. The breeding methodology of extra-strong genotypes has certain specific nature: reserve proteins electrophoreses for identification of alleles with positive effect on quality indices; involving to hybridization winter and spring types as genetic sources of high baking quality; change specific environment conditions to select extra-strong genotypes on different breeding stages. |
| Collection of the Ustymivka Experimental Station as a source of original material for maize breeding with improved biochemical indices of corn | Author : Kharchenko, Yu. V.; Kharchenko, L. Ya. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose of this work is to identify promising samples of corn from the collection of Ustymivka Experimental Station of Plant Production with important biochemical indicators of quality – high protein and starch content.
Methods. Field, laboratory, summarizing.
Results. The grading of the collection samples of corn according to biochemical indicators was carried out. Only one line with a very high protein content of 15.8% was allocated – ‘UHK 464’ (Ukraine). 57 lines and 35 varieties of different eco-geographical origin had the high level of protein content. This makes it possible to select valuable forms. Among self-polluting lines, the sources of very high protein content (14.0–15.0%) include: ‘UH 220’, (Ukraine) and ‘A 27-51’, ‘R 168’ (USA). 10 varieties of maize had the corn protein content within 12.0–12.9%, the best of them are conventional variety ‘UB0104037’ (Russia) and UB0100419 ‘Cuzco’ (Mexico). Among the maize lines created with the wx, se, o2, ae, su1, su2, sh2 genes, some corn samples were identified as a combination of high productivity with increased protein content. Very high content of starch in corn (70.0–75.5%) was found in 147 samples, including 39 lines and 108 varieties. Only 3 lines had a starch content of more than 76.0% – ‘HLG 4’ and ‘A 169’ (Ukraine), ‘7023’ (Germany). This indicator varies within the limits of 73–75% in 23 maize lines. The best of them are ‘LK 14795’, ‘UHK 383’, ‘UHR 74-2’ (Ukraine), ‘MA 23 S’ (France), ‘B 312’ (Russia), ‘LH 59’ (USA), ‘?? 70511’ (Croatia), ‘N 4-1-6’ (Serbia and Montenegro), ‘Martonvasar 1’, ‘Martonvasar 2’ (Hungary). It is recommended to use self-pollinated lines ‘G 6’, ‘CO 72-75-13 PR’, ‘D-BE-14’, ‘W 117’, ‘407’, ‘P 502 ZM’, ‘UHK 565’, ‘Oh 45’ in the maize selection process for hybrids and lines with the high content of protein and starch. This provides a valuable source material, which will serve as the basis for the priority directions of maize breeding.
Conclusions. Based on the results of the study, a valuable original material for maize lines and hybrids breeding with improved biochemical composition of corn was formed. The studied corn samples are in the collections of the Ustymivka Experimental Station and the National Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine and can be used by breeders and other consumers in theoretical and practical developments.

| Analysis of electrophoretic spectra of zeins for the evaluation of the genetic diversity of maize lines (Zea mays (L.) Merr.) | Author : Prysiazhniuk, L. M.; Satarova, T. M.; Tkachyk, S. O.; Shytikova, Yu. V.; Dzyubetskyi, B. V.; Cherchel, V. Yu. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To evaluate zein electrophoretic spectra of maize lines in order to create the panel for certification.
Methods. Electrophoresis of reserve proteins, cluster analysis.
Results. Findings of investigations of maize line 31 on reserve proteins in seeds using electrophoretic separation of zein components are presented. Based on the determination of the relative electrophoretic mobility of zeins, it was found that the studied maize lines are homogeneous and have differences in zeins component composition, which allows to identify them. It was defined that the most similar lines were ‘??744’ and ‘??298’, ‘??3070’ and ‘??633/325’, ‘PLS61’ and ‘Chi31’ in which more spectra with the same relative electrophoretic mobility were revealed. The unique components of zein 96, 32 and 41 are determined in the studied lines ‘??267’, ‘??129-4’ and ‘??236’. Cluster analysis allowed to define that the lines ‘??315’, ‘??267’ and ‘??276’ were at the greatest distance from all the studied lines. According to genetic distances, a sufficient level of similarity (300–400) for zein spectra is noted between lines of Iodent and Lancaster germplasms.
Conclusions. For evaluation of maize gene pool, it is advisable to use the method of electrophoresis of reserve proteins, because it allows to evaluate their homogeneity and define the level of genetic kinship. It is defined that the most distant lines among the studied ones are ‘??315’, ‘??267’ and ‘??276’. It has been established that the well-known reference lines ‘PLS61’ and ‘Chi31’ formed a separate cluster. Thus, the use of the method of electrophoresis of reserve proteins allowed to define the most distant lines with common type of germplasm and identify similar components of zein in lines of different genoplasm. |
| Pigments, efficiency of photosynthesis and winter wheat productivity | Author : Priadkina, H. A | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To analyze characteristics of pigment apparatus and photosynthetic efficiency of wheat in connection with the perspectives to increase yielding capacity.
Methods. Field, small-plot, morphometric, spectrophotometric, high-performance liquid chromatography, statistical ones.
Results. The results of comparative studies of the photosynthetic apparatus characteristics of two winter wheat varieties at different levels of its organization (chloroplast, leaf, and crop), with more than 40 years difference of breeding time, are presented. It was shown that under different growing conditions the modern variety ‘Favorytka’ differed both by higher content of chlorophyll as the main photosynthetic pigment and its gross amount in the leaves, as well as specific leaves weight and longer functioning of crop photosynthetic apparatus at the late stages of vegetation than old variety ‘Myronivska 808’. Based on the changes of the de-epoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle pigments, caused by variation of light conditions, the better photosynthetic apparatus efficiency of variety ‘Favorytka’ was established. All these changes ultimately contributed to more efficient use of absorbed light energy for biomass formation of this variety. Found on the analysis of the own data and literature, it is shown that increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis is a promising strategy for raising plant productivity.
Conclutions. It was found that the increase of yield of modern winter wheat variety ‘Favorytka’, as compared with variety ‘Myronivska 808’ to be bred in the 60s, was accompanied with a rise of content and gross amount of chlorophyll and a prolongation of functioning of crop photosynthetic apparatus during the reproductive period. In addition, the modern variety was characterized by an increase in photosynthetic productivity due to more efficient use of absorbed light energy. |
| Sowing quality of the white lupine seeds in dependence on the phytotoxic impact of herbicides | Author : Veresenko, ?. ?.; Levchenko, ?. ?.; Hurenko, ?. V. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To study the phytotoxic impact of herbicides and their effect on the formation of plant productivity and sowing quality of white lupine seeds.
Methods. Field, laboratory and statistical methods were applied. Seed sowing quality parameters were determined in laboratory conditions in accordance with DSTU 2240-93.
Results. The most effective phytotoxic impact was found for herbicides and tank mixture: Harnes, Harnes + Jupiter, Prometrex + Jupiter, Prometrex and Stomp: the average levels of weeds death were: 79,0; 80,1; 77,4, 75,3 and 69,2% correspondingly. The best seed yield was obtained in the reference variant with manual weeding and in variants with the applying of Harnes herbicide and tank mixture Harnes + Jupiter, Prometrex + Jupiter, where the plant productivity was within 91.9–96.7% (of the reference variant). Lower seed mass (from the plant) was obtained on the areas with the herbicides applying on the visible sprouts (‘Serpnevyi’ variety – 6.8 g, ‘Chabanskyi’ variety – 7.4 g). Plant productivity in the variant without manual weeding and without any herbicide applying was the lowest – 5,9 g and 6,7 g correspondingly. The herbicides applying on the visible sprouts of lupine has led to crop seed germination energy decreasing in comparison with the reference variant by 2.0%. In the variant with herbicides spraying before the visible sprouts appearance, significant reduction was not observed. The lowest results were obtained in the variant without the herbicides use and without manual weeding (on average 85.7%). Laboratory test for seed sprouts in all variants corresponds to the requirements of State Standard of Ukraine (87.0%). A slight decreasing of seed sprouts was peculiar for the seeds obtained after herbicides spraying on the visible lupine sprouts (on average 92.0%). The weight of 1000 seeds in the variants with the herbicides use before the visible sprouts appearance was within 96.8–102.1% (in comparison with reference variant). A more significant decreasing observed in the variants with the herbicides spraying on the visible sprouts, where indices were on average 93.6% of the variant with manual weeding. The weight of 1000 seeds was the smallest in the variant without the herbicides use and without manual weeding.
Conclusions. The most effective action for the weeds control is established with the use of the herbicides such as: Harnes, Prometrex, Stomp; and the use of tank mixture such as: Harnes + Jupiter, Prometrex + Jupiter. The best indicators of productivity and seed sowing quality parameters were obtained in the reference variant with manual weeding, and the worst – without the herbicides use and without manual weeding. It was not defined negative effect on the sowing qualities of seeds with the use of herbicides before sprouts appearance. In the variants when herbicides were sprayed on the visible sprouts – it led to a slight negative effect. |
| Yield and quality of pea grain as affected by agronomic practices under the conditions of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine | Author : Prysiazhniuk, O. I.; Korol, L. V.; Polovynchuk, O. Yu. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To identify the features of pea productivity as affected by application of organic and mineral fertilizers and plant growth regulators under the conditions of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine.
Methods. The objects of the study were two leafless pea varieties ‘Uliublenets’ and ‘Yulii’. At the stage of budding, the plants were fed with organic and mineral fertilizers “Biovit” and “Freia-Akva Bobovi” and treated with growth regulators “Rehoplant” and “Ahrostymulin”, both separately and in one pass, with the fertilization rates recommended by manufacturers.
Results. A relation of the yield components formation (number of plants survived through vegetation period per unit area, number of beans per plant, number of seeds in beans and seeds per plant, as well as the 1000 kernel weight and seed weight per the plant) and the varietal peculiarities, treatments and weather conditions of the year was found. The most significant effect on the crop productivity had plant density, seed number per plant and seed weight per plant. A clear pattern was observed regarding the efficiency of organic and mineral fertilizers and plant growth regulators combination on the formation of yield components, and consequently, on the yield and quality of pea grain. Moreover, this pattern was not affected by adverse environmental conditions in both varieties under study and was observed in all years of the experiment. The highest yield and quality of grain (content of crude protein, fat, etc.) were recorded in complex treatments.
Conclusions. Application of fertilizers and plant growth regulators in pea sowings is an important and effective factor in the realization of crop yield potential. The characteristics of individual plant productivity, grain yield, and quality determined in the experiment can be used to improve the model of cultivation technology for pea under the conditions of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine |
| Frost-resistance of the blackberry (Rubus subg. Eubatus Focke) cultivars in the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine | Author : Telepenko, Yu. Yu. | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Purpose. To improve the blackberry assortment based on studying the economic and biological peculiarities of new cultivars and their adaptabivity under the soil and climatic conditions of the Western Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine for the further variety research and use in breeding programs.
Methods. Laboratory, field, analytical and statistical ones.
Results. Investigations were carried out to determine the influence of variable temperatures on 25 blackberry cultivars and their frostresistance to artificially created low temperatures (25and -30 °C). The degree of shoot tissue damage of blackberry plants with low temperatures in the field was also analyzed.
Conclusions. The analysis of the degree of damage of blackberry plant shoots showed that a shoot apex appeared to be the most susceptible to the influence of low temperatures and the middle part of the shoot was most resistant. On the basis of the results of the laboratory freezing of the blackberry plant shoots, cultivars were defined to be the most resistant to the both -25 and -30 °C low temperatures (‘Sadove chudo’ and ‘Orkan’). ‘Ouachita’ and ‘Cacanska Bestrna’ cultivars were also resistant to the temperature -25 °C (their total damage score did not exceed 9.0%). It is risky to cultivate ‘Nasoloda’, ‘Black Diamond’, ‘Tornfree’, ‘Loch Tay’, ‘Triple Crown’ and ‘Black Butte Blackberry’ in the areas where the temperature can be lowering to -25 °C without taking additional agrotechnical measures to protect against damage with low temperatures. The most sensitive to the temperature of -30 °C was the ‘Black Butte Blackberry’, ‘Nasoloda’, ‘Black Diamond’, ‘Black Pearl’ and ‘Jumbo’ cultivars (damage of more than 50% shoots was noted). This temperature conditions were critical for ‘Chief Joseph’, ‘Reuben’, ‘Tornfree’, ‘Karaka Black’, ‘Black Magic’, ‘Loch Tay’ and ‘Triple Crown’. The ‘Kiowa’ cultivar was quite resistant to both temperatures. The dependence of the shoots damage degree on the scrub architectonics was determined. The cultivars with creeping shoots are more susceptible to the effect of low temperatures than those that are more upright. |
