27 IJSSES A Contemporary Adaptation of John Dewey’s Pragmatism (Instrumentalism) For Politics in Nigeria |
Author : Ihejirika Cardinal |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The essence of education is for its recipients to employ knowledge obtained there-from to solve practical problems of their society. Yet, it has become ironical in Nigeria that both the huge expense on education and the innumerable certified persons in governance have failed to satisfactorily solve our many socio-economic and political problems, chief among which is bad governance. This sad fate has been traced to the lack of a defined philosophy in the provisions of the 2004 Nigeria National Policy on Citizenship education. This educational policy is laden with the theoretical nature of our inherited colonial authoritarian education with its oratorial and certificate overemphasis. It has failed to impart critical and pragmatic skills and values requisite for nurturing and entrenchment of democratic values among the citizenry. The result is the near war experience, loss of human lives and wanton destruction of property experienced during every political transition time in Nigeria. This, then, is where Dewey’s instrumentalism comes in to fill the ideological lacuna. Our paper therefore considers the application of the implications of Dewey’s instrumentalism to education as a portent tool for inculcating critical consciousness necessary for the cultivation of pragmatic and democratic values in the citizenry such that, they will be enabled to confront the challenges of democracy in Nigeria politics. |

Author : Kumar Laxman & Louise Sheryn |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The chief aim of this study was to investigate the different strategies that can be adopted in exploring how mobile computing devices can be used in curricular delivery. The research site of our study i.e a college in Auckland, adopted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) plan for mobile devices acquisition. Our research study focused on the mobile learning culture that has emerged in this school brought about by this BYOD policy and its impact on learning and teaching. A case study research methodology was adopted for this study. It was observed from the cases that students generally seemed more motivated in and excited about their learning when mobile devices were used during classroom curricular hours. However, the findings of this study also clearly attest to the fact that merely embedding technological tools within curricular design doesn’t necessarily transform teaching and learning to higher levels of pedagogical effectiveness. The teaching that was happening in the classrooms operated often at the elementary substitution level of SAMR model. It was obvious that technology needs to be wrapped around the critical core of effective learning design to match the affordances of the technology involved with the optimal learning pathways of students. |

Author : Abdul Kadir Ritonga |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Teachers are at the forefront of improving the quality of education. Teaching and learning process is the beginning of the quality of vocational education. That is, the overall quality of education comes from the quality of the learning process conducted in the classroom. Quality improvement of human resources as early as possible can be directed in an integrated manner through various efforts by all components of the nation so that the younger generation can develop optimally in accordance with its potential. An educator should understand students’ differences in the learning process by involving a number of interrelated components. These components include vision and goals to be achieved, used approaches, applied strategies, methods, techniques, and selected tactic. In teaching and learning activities, students have different potential talents, interests, and intelligences. If all the potentials can be processed, nourished, shaped, and developed, indeed, all of that potentials become something of value and benefit to humans. The success of a learning process can be known to what extent the process provides significant for students on cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Therefore, the program development as an alternative is very much needed in improving the quality of service in vocational education. |

Author : Mohammad AlAmro |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The field of verb studies suffers from a shortage of research studies and this paper attempts to add some weight to these kinds of studies. Unfortunately, most dictionaries as well as ESL/EFL textbooks do not provide a clear picture of the semantic usage of words. This paper investigates the semantic level of the following verbs: collect, gather, put together, and assemble. While at first glance these words appear to have very similar meanings, and indeed can appear synonymous with one another, each encompasses a different gradient of meaning. The paper describes the semantic usage and different sense of connotation that belong to these words. Additionally, the aim of this paper would be to determine which of the aforementioned verbs American speakers often use in their casual speech as well as in other genres. The framework of the semantic description is laid through the comparison of the definitions of these words from several major dictionaries. Taking into consideration that this probably is not something one can definitely determine unless a large corpus of English is used, the framework of the semantic description is refined through the use of the online corpus collection: Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Many samples of each word have been collected as well as the collocations and contexts wherein they are found. |

Author : Yusra Farooq Baqal & Shlair Abdulkhaleq |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Second hand products are gaining more prominence in the present era of the world because there is an improvement in technology on a daily basis. This means that the products produced today will be outdated tomorrow and in order to go for an advanced version, there is a need to sell used products. The selling of second hand products makes today’s buyer to become a seller tomorrow, which are both profitable for the two parties. In this respects, there are certain factors influencing the purchase of these products considering the fact that they have been used before. These factors include; price, risk, market place and brand. Sometimes, we cannot say price is the only reason for purchasing these products since both rich and poor are now going for it. But definitely, price constitutes one of the main reasons because it is reasonable to buy a second hand product in good condition to perform the same task with the new product at a cheaper rate. Other influencing factors such as risk play a pivotal role as well because these products have been used before and they might be sold due to some faults, which could eventually make them useless for new buyers. The different roles played by these influencing factors have been well explained in this project using both primary and secondary data. |
