ON THE STATE OF IBEROLATINAMERICAN JOURNALS DEDICATED TO FOOD AND NUTRITION SCIENCES | Author : Evelyn Frías-Toral, Carla Almazán Cárdenas, Sergio Santana Porbén | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Rationale: Publishing of the results of a concluded research is the final step of the scientific activity. Choice of the literary container is determinant for the visibility and the impact of the scientific communication.
Objective: To describe the state of the ibero-latin-american (ILA) journals devoted to publishing contents of the Food and Nutrition sciences.
Study design: Descriptive.
Methods: ILA journals specialized in publishing of contents of the Food and Nutrition sciences that where identified in selected literary repositories were described regarding the host country, the Publisher, the number of items comprising each volume, the adherence to the “Open Access” declaration, and the “Article Processing Charges” (APC) canon. Performance of the ILA journals was described by means of several metrics.
Results: Twenty-seven journals were identified among 8 different countries. Journals differed regarding the publisher, number of items per volume, and adherence to the “Open Access” declaration. All (but one of) the examined journals accept original contributions without charging the APC canon. Visibility of ILA journals dedicated to Food and Nutrition sciences is poor when examined by means of different performance metrics.
Conclusions: Visibility of ILA journals specialized in publishing contents of the Food and Nutrition sciences is poor, and that might explain (at least in part) their insufficient impact. A change of mentality and attitude towards the scientific publication is needed in order to increase the visibility, and consequently the impact of the journals dedicated in the ILA area to Food and Nutrition sciences. |
| USE OF BLOOD SMEARS FOR BACTEREMIA IDENTIFICATION IN TURTLES OF THE TRACHEMYS GENUS | Author : Julián Vaillard, Carlos Vásquez Peláez, Liliana Aurora Ramos Garduño | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Aims: Bacteremia is a common finding in chelonian. The aim of this study is to identify this bacteremia using blood smears stained with Gram.
Methods and Material: We did Squash blood smears from Trachemys patients over 100 grams and without previous treatment. The blood smears were stained with the Gram technique and examined under the immersion objective 100x.
Results: We gathered a total of 28 samples. Only 14% of the samples were positive to Gram + cocci. The absence of clinical signs and hematologic alterations in the samples, classifies the presences of these bacteria as sample contamination.
Conclusions: The blood smear is a useful technique for bacteremia identification. However, the specificity and sensibility of the test its unknown, therefore it is necessary to perform new studies which can provide insight of its efficacy. |
| INFORMATION IS NOT KNOWLEDGE: ABOUT FUNCTIONAL FOODS | Author : Ignacio Jáuregui-Lobera, María Jesús Oliveras López | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Introduction: Functional foods (FF) are those that, in addition to what they provide nutritionally, are beneficial for health, improve the welfare state and reduce the risk of getting sick. Probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, functional nutrients and non-nutrient functional compounds are considered functional. The aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge about FF in a university population.
Materials and Methods: A total of 120 university students were interviewed (26 of Dietetics and Human Nutrition Degree, 45 of Degrees on Letters, 32 students of Health Sciences and 17 students of several Degrees on Sciences). There were 95 women (79.17%) and 25 men (20.83%), with a mean age of 22,57 ± 1,90. All they fulfilled a Questionnaire to assess their knowledge about FF, which was responded voluntarily.
Results: It was evident that the knowledge about FF is very scarce in university populations and, although something better, quite poor among the students of human nutrition and dietetics. The consideration that FF benefits are not always clear, some dangers derived from excesses, ignorance of regulations in a large part of the interviewees, etc. lead to that conclusion.
Discussion: The success in the binomial information-behavior change is based on a series of factors related to the content and design of information, but most campaigns and communications related to health end up appealing to the fear. The fact that FF are largely linked to commercial interests or to the simple fact of being something fashionable might be elements that discourage to deep into the knowledge about FF. |
| FACTORS THAT TRIGGER CHILDHOOD OBESITY, A PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM | Author : Jesús Carlos Ruvalcaba Ledezma, Juan Hernández Barrera, Jesús Roberto García Díaz, Antonio Lozano Jaén, Lorena Ivonne Morales García, Miriam Selene Hernández Medina, Iracema Islas Vega, Maricarmen Rivera Gómez, Josefina Reynoso Vázquez | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Obesity is a global pandemic and children are a vulnerable group. Obesity in childhood and adolescence has a negative impact on the health and burden of diseases at that stage of life and later on in adulthood. Therefore, it is crucial to seek strategies and interventions that prevent overweight and obesity in children and adolescents to improve the health conditions of a country.
Aim. To determine the triggers of childhood obesity in Hidalgo as a public health problem in children aged 6 to 12 years.
Material and methods. For the study the population relative to the parents will be taken as reference point, being a secondary source, of students of the six grades of primary education that comprise ages of 6 to 12 years.

| OBESITY AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER NON-TRANSMITTED CHRONIC DISEASES | Author : Josefina Reynoso Vázquez, John Carrillo Ramírez, Luis Algarín Rojas, Oscar Camacho Romero, Jesús Carlos Ruvalcaba Ledezma | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that around 312 million people in the world suffer from obesity, which is defined as "an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health".
Aim. Evidence association between obesity and Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases ECNT in adults.
Method. A systematic review was carried out based on information published in databases such as Medline, ScienceDirect, INEGI and OMS.
Results. The information detected in the network indicates that there is sufficient evidence of the association between obesity and chronic noncommunicable diseases, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension and cancer, and it was found that work between government and society is necessary. , that is, with co-responsibility.
Conclusions. There is sufficient evidence of association between obesity and NCD, sedentary lifestyle, the socioeconomic conditions in which the vast majority of the Mexican population lives, the level of schooling and measures to mitigate incomplete obesity, such as labeling of food products without standard to compare and make the decision to consume them or not, among others. Disjointed programs of social reality, designed in the desktop or inherited, do not provide positive results. |
| OBESITY, A REAL PERSISTENT PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM IN MEXICO | Author : Lorena Ivonne Morales García, Jesús Carlos Ruvalcaba Ledezma | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Obesity is a real persistent public health problem in our country that increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. Epidemiological evidences make clear the substantial increase that it has had over time, resulting in an economic impact on health expenditures. The fundamental cause of the presence of this epidemic is due to the modification of lifestyles, which involve bad dietary habits, as well as little or no physical activity; so to focus attention on these styles can be the key not only to solve the problem, but to prevent it. The present review focuses on exposing the most relevant aspects of obesity as a public health problem in our country and the world, based on its conceptualization and classification, the epidemiological figures over the years, the economic implications, as well as the as the causes and strategies for its prevention and control. |
