EVALUATION OF AWARENESS OF STERILIZATION AND DISINFECTION AMONG THE CANDIDATES OF HEALTH TECHNICIAN | Author : Lale TÜRKMEN, Elif Burcu BALI, Duygu ÜSTÜN, Bahtiyar BAKIR | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Objective: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in healthcare-related infections. In health facilities,
inadequate sterilization and disinfection is extremely important for the health of the community. Therefore, it is aimed
to evaluate the awareness of sterilization and disinfection of healthcare professionals in this study.
Methods: In this study, the 100 health technician candidates from Gazi University, Vocational School of Health Services
were randomly sampled and the study was performed by using face-to-face questionnaire. The data were analyzed
using SPSS 20.0 package program.
Results: 71% of the candidates explained they knew the concept of sterilization. The option of "heat sterilization" as the
sterilization method was prefered at the highest rate with 75%. The concept of disinfection was known by 81% of the
candidates. All of the candidates believed disinfection is important. The knowledge about the disinfection methods was
evaluated and the option of disinfectant was mostly prefered in the ratio of 44%. 73% of the candidates said
sterilization and disinfection practices prevented infections in the health facilities. Only 54% of the candidates thought
hand hygiene had a role in the prevention of diseases.
Conclusion: It was determined the health technician candidates do not have an adequate knowledge about the
methods, despite the sterilization and disinfection awareness of them. The knowledge levels of the candidates on
relationship between hand hygiene and diseases was also very low. The results of our research show more attention
should be paid to increasing the training of infectious diseases and awareness-raising activities in our country. |
| EFFECTS OF HIGH-PROTEIN DIETS ON METABOLISM | Author : Aslihan SOYAL, Hülya DEMIR | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :High protein diets (25% - 35% of energy) that are more satisfying than protein, carbohydrate or fat are often used for
weight loss. High protein diets are often replaced by carbohydrate protein and may be low or high in saturated fat.
The effects on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol are strongly dependent on
carbohydrate restriction and saturated fat intake, even though serum triglyceride is lower as carbohydrate intake
decreases, and in some cases, density lipoprotein cholesterol may rise despite weight loss.
From these findings, experts argue that to increase the percentage of overweight dietary protein in studies that have
begun to investigate the effects of high protein diets on weight loss. This argument has not been sufficiently
comprehensive and long-term studies on the reality of macro-nutritional status, its impact on body weight. In this
study, the findings in the literature will be investigated and in the future it is aimed to reach a more comprehensive
study.

| COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS USED IN THE TREATMENT OF DIABETES: LITERATURE REVIEW | Author : Afra ÇALIK, Sevgisun KAPUCU | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that causes acute and chronic complications without complete remission.
For this reason, individuals with diabetes often choose to resort to complementary treatment methods as well as
medical treatment methods that will support them in the course of the disease. The purpose of this literature review is
to evaluate the studies conducted to determine complementary and alternative treatment methods used by diabetic
patients. A literature review was conducted using the keywords “complementary and alternative medicine” and
"diabetes" in the PubMed and EBSCO database searching for articles published between 2007 and 2017. Studies on
pediatric patients and rats were not included in the literature review. The detailed literature search result yielded 211
scholarly articles. 13 of these articles were included in the review as their designs were quasi-experimental, crosssectional or descriptive. The general objective of the scholarly articles included in the literature review is to determine
the frequency and methods of complementary and alternative therapies used by diabetic patients. The total number of
patients included in the review is 7.948 between the ages of 18 and 80. The percentage of patients using
complementary and alternative methods (CAM) is between 34% and 92%. The most commonly used CAMs are herbal
treatments, multi-vitamin support and acupuncture. The literature review indicates that herbal products are used by
diabetic patients to slow down the disease progression. Despite the large sample sizes, they are all descriptive studies.
It is, therefore, suggested that further studies perform randomized controlled trials to reveal the effect of CAMs on
patients. |
| EFFECTS OF BODY MASS INDEX ON FOOTBALL PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION | Author : Neslihan Altuntas YILMAZ, Fatma ERDEO, Ayse Merve TAT, Hayriye ALP | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Aim: The increase in the Body Mass Index changes the normal pressure distribution on the soles of the feet and causes various
deformities, such as those that do not load, pes planus, falls in the ankle. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the distribution
of the foot pressure according to the body mass index of the persons with normal foot structure applied to the pedobarography
laboratory for various reasons.
Methods: In our study, 9 males and 12 females were completed and a total of 21 patients were evaluated retrospectively. The
average age of the subjects included in the study was 40.16 (min; 19, max; 63). Body mass index (BMI) (kg / m2) was calculated
in all cases. In our study, four groups were formed according to body mass indexes: weak (8 people), normal (6 people),
overweight (4 people) and obese (3 people).
Results: In our study, there was no difference between the base sounds and the sex. However, an increase in the percentage of the
plantar pressure of the posterior leg was detected, with no significant difference between the right and left sides of the foot parallel
to the increase in the mass index.
Conclusion: We think our work will be a guide for future work. |
