| ATTITUDES OF MEDICAL STAFF AND STUDENTS TOWARDS THE ELDERLY: SYSTEMATIC REVIEW | Author : Isil KALAYCI, Sercan ÖZBEK YAZICI, Metin ÖZKUL, Gizem HELVACI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Aim: In Turkey, the elderly population is increasing at a higher speed than that of other age groups. The treatment and care needs of the elderly are more than the other periods of life, because chronic and degenerative diseases increase in parallel with age in the elderly period. Medical staff have an important role in the determination of the quality of health care. Negative attitudes towards the elderly and aging may cause decreases in quality health service provided to the elderly. The purpose of this study is to identify and systematically review the studies investigating attitudes of medical staff and students towards the elderly in Turkey.
Method: A systematic search of database covering English and Turkish language publications focusing on attitudes of Turkish medical staff and students towards the elderly was conducted. In this research, key words ‘elderly’, ’attitude’, ‘medical staff (nurse, doctor, physiotherapist etc.)’, ‘students’, attitude scale towards elderly such as ‘YATO,KOGAN,UCLA-GA’ are used. At the end of the research, totally 21 studies were held and all of them were evaluated.
Results: %95.2 of study reviewed, attitudes of the health personnel and students towards the elderly were positively reported. Also the studies frequently evaluated effects of age, sex, level of education, experiences of living, working with the elderly on attitudes of medical staff and students towards elderly. However, when the effects of these variables on attitudes are compared, it seems that the results are inconsistent. Also, studies imply that the medical staff and students are required to improve their positive attitudes towards the elderly. During the past 50 years, therefore there has been increasing interest on identification of attitudes of medical staff and students towards the elderly. But the results from studies on attitudes are controversial.
Conclusion: According to the results, it suggests that more comprehensive studies on attitudes of medical staff towards the elderly are carried out. |

Method: Children diagnosed as ALL, between 4-18 ages, having medical treatment at hospital were included in this study. Children with any other neurologic or metabolic diseases and children whose cancer reoccurred didn’t include. For all of the children, information recorded about age (year), height (cm), body mass (kg), gender, exercise background, recurrent of the cancer and medical treatment. Assessment scales that are used in this study were; Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, sit-to-stand test, 1 minute walk test (1 MWT), Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeFIM), Impact on Family Scale (IPFAM), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) (Cancer Module) Parent Proxy Report and Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire Short Form (CSHQ). We presented descriptive analyses as minimums, maximums, means and standard deviations for continuous variables and minimums, maximums, medians and standard errors for categorical variables. We set the level of significance at p<0.05.
Results: We included 7 children (5 girls and 2 boys) and parents in this study. Mean age of the children was 6.86 ±4.48 years. In our sample mean value of GMFM-66 was 67.65±15.57, TUG was 11.69±5.10, 1 MWT was 55.81±23.81, sit-to-stand test was 23.69±6.81, IPFAM total score was 72.71±4.34, CSHQ total score was 48.71±2.87, WeeFIM total score was 100.57±7.27 and PedsQL total score was 64.29±19.17
Conclusion: According to the study ALL affects musculoskeletal status, quality of life, family impairment and sleep habits of the children. We think muscle strengthening exercises and activity
focused interventions could be effective and should be studied in new research in the rehabilitation of ALL. |
