WHAT IS THE THESIS OF “THEORY OF LITERATURE” |
Author : IBRAHIM BIRICIK |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :The book "Theory of Literature" by Teryy Eagleton, which was first published in 1983, seems to be a book, in which the theoretical bases of its theoretical reflections are laid by regarding literature as science, for those who have not read apparently. However, this book does not only talk about the theories of literature. This is one of the reasons, by the author’s own expression, why his book has been read too much and attracted a mass of readers beyond academia.
Rather than theory-based didacticity, this book deals with the fact that literature is not a "literary", but an approach based on human sciences, and tells that the definition of literature theory can be reached by questioning what literature is. In this way, the theory of literature is liberated from the hegemony of the elitist coterie and proves that literature is also shaped by groups seen as "the other". This shaping should not be found odd because 20th century is a time period when both sociological and ideological transformations and changes are experienced by societies. This article aims to point out what and how Terry Eagleton has told about literary theories by a critical eye. |
