Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This study aimed at exploring the psychological support provided for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in a community-based organization (CBO) in Soweto, South Africa. A total of 14 participants took part in the study. Out of which, 12 were OVC (5 males and 7 females, aged 10 to 18 years) and 2 female social workers were selected to take part in the study. This study utilized open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured individual interviews and focus group discussions s as methods of data collection. The thematically analyzed data revealed that the OVC received psychological support through occasional counseling, mentorship, and peer-group support within the CBO. The study realized that counseling was offered occasionally by some psychological counselors who are hired by the CBO and this was seen as cost-effective. The study found that the CBO utilizes mentorship and peer-group support in addressing psychological challenges facing OVC. The study recommends that the CBO together with donors should have permanent psychological counselors who can provide regular counseling services to OVC as the need arises. |

Author : Shanika L. Wilson |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :This project is a study of the use of mindfulness in a psychosocial rehabilitation setting (PSR). This paper explores ten published articles, a book, and a personal interview as it relates to mindfulness and the treatment of severe mental illness (SMI). In an interview done with the head of a (PSR) program, Evelyn Sanders (2018) who defined PSR as a place to assist persons diagnosed with a severe mental illness (SMI) with decreasing psychiatric hospitalizations, gaining social support and insight into their illnesses. Walsan et al (2018) defined severe mental illness (SMI) as any person in an impaired psychological state where the brain is functioning improperly lasting long in duration. All the articles describe the effects mindfulness meditation and mindfulness-based interventions have on persons diagnosed with a (SMI). The researchers will utilize a mindfulness community intervention created by Norwood & Merritt (2017) which includes three practices from the published book, “A Journey to Spiritual Health”. The three practices include the practice of meditation and utilizing mantras and gratitude journaling in which the researcher defined in this paper. |

Object and Face Naming Tasks In Relation To Same and Different Category Conditions |
Author : George Varvatsoulias |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :An experiment of two factors (2X2) within participants ANOVA design was conducted. 20 UEL students in total have taken part. The experiment -partial replication of the Damian et al. (2001) and Vitkovitch et al. (2006) experiments- had two stimuli/factor 1 (object and faces) and a context/factor 2 of four conditions (homogene-ous/heterogeneous for objects and homogeneous/heterogeneous for faces). It was predicted that participants will need longer time to respond to homogeneous objects than to heterogeneous, whereas shorter time for homogeneous faces and longer for heterogeneous ones. The experiment has shown no significant semantic effect for homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions in the context factor, whereas an overall slow significance in relation to the stimulus factor, i.e. faces were named more difficult than the objects. The interaction that was found between objects and faces has shown marginal significance towards the predicted direction on behalf of the faces over the objects. There was concluded that object naming refers to minor latencies compared to high ones of face naming. |
