Using image schemas, in nowadays technology, even AI (artificial intelligence) can concept things in response to their
creator negativity or positivity. This is reflected in one of the most selling games around the world in 2012 called Dragon Age ‘Origins’. The AI in form of NPC (Non-Playable Character) inside the game reflects on the creator of the game on negativity or positivity toward the lexical concept of the mage. Through image schemas, shaping the lexical concept of mage deemed possible and proved the negativity or positivity creator of the game toward mage. This research analyzes the cognitive -semantic process of image schema and shaping the concept of ‘image’ by describing kinds of image schemas exist in the Dragon Age ‘Origins’ Game. This research
is also aimed at analyzing kinds of image schemas and describing the image schemas which
shape the concept of ‘mage’ itself. The methodology used in this research is qualitative where
participative observation is employed in five stages and documentation. The results show that
there are four image schemas existing in the game and those image schemas shape the lexical
concept of ‘mage’. |
| Foreigner Talk in Conversation from YouTube Channel “Abroad in Japan” | Author : IDA ZURAIDA; NURUL FITRI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This paper entitled “Foreigner Talk in conversation from YouTube Channel “Abroad in Japan” explains language adjustment used by the native speaker to address the non-native speaker
known as Foreigner Talk. The purpose of this research is to identify types of modified input and types of modified interaction of Foreigner Talk. The main theories are from Ellis (1986) and Long (1981). Source of data taken from speeches in 2 videos from YouTube channel “Abroad in Japan”.
The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method, which describes the collected data and drawing a conclusion in general. Steps taken are watching videos, choosing videos, finding the Foreigner Talk, transcribing, categorizing the data, identifying Foreigner Talk that
consists of 3 types of modified input and 9 types of modified interaction, and then drawing a conclusion. The results of this research show that there are two types of modified input that are often used by the native speaker in video 1, namely Grammatical and ungrammatical Foreigner Talk (36%) and No Input Foreigner talk (36%). Type of modified input which is often used in video 2 is Grammatical Foreigner Talk (57%). Type of modified interaction, which is often used in both
videos, is confirmation check, in video 1 there are 11 data (47%) and in video 2 there are 9 data (34%). |
| A Multi-Level Collaborative and Cooperative Writing Class in Inducing Character Building (A Model of An Integration Between Teaching Writing and Character Education) | Author : TEDI ROHADI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Character education should not plainly implicate socially-authorize pattern for such character as honesty and perseverance, but also and perhaps more importantly it should provide the ways in which the students believe of their own conception selves, and their essential qualities that will back the actualization of those selves. This conceit may require a more personalized or less formulaic appropriate to inscribe instruction, but the compensation of such transformations
of instructive goals and methods might well be the revitalization of democratic society in Indonesia. Taking that into account, a multi-level collaborative and cooperative writing class,
in a more specific context and scope, classroom practices, provides one of breakthroughs toward this direction. This model of writing class is either implicitly or explicitly integrated
with character education. The paper is a report of a research and development. Theories and concepts supporting the study will initiate the paper. The next part of the paper will explore
the so called “a multi-level collaborative and cooperative writing class” itself as the product of the study and its implementation. The paper will not only address some problems that were
experienced during the implementation but also will furnish some suggestions to resolve those efficacious problems in the conclusion part of the article. |
| Politeness Strategies and Social Dimensions in Once Upon A Time Season 1 Movie Series: Sociopragmatics Study | Author : HENDAR; BUNGA GALUH ANDRETTA TRISNANDI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The purposes of this research are to find out the types of politeness strategies used to save the face of the characters in Once Upon A Time season 1 and to identify the dominant scale of social dimensions when using politeness strategies in Once Upon A Time season 1. This research uses qualitative-descriptive analysis method and to get the data needed in this research the writer did the following steps: watching the movies, transcribing the speech, searching the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data and drawing a conclusion related to the types of politeness strategies and the dominant scale of social dimensions. The source of the data used is taken from the serial film Once Upon A Time season 1 by Edward Kitsis dan Adam Horowitz. The results of this research show that there are four types of politeness strategies found in the serial film Once Upon A Time season 1. They are 10 data of bald on-record (28,6%), 8 data of positive politeness strategies (22,9%), 13 data of negative politeness strategies (37,1%) and 4 data of off-record consists (11,4%) and the most dominant scale of four social dimension scales is social distance scale 14 data (40%). |

It may be true if they have already had students with sufficient English knowledge. If they don’t have that situation, and they have to deal with the students with insufficient English knowledge, the first and the most important thing they have to do is creating a program with certain lesson topic. The lesson topics must be integrated and placed in a correct order. This research reveals a program that is tested to help some students with low English knowledge background to be able to create simple sentences. This research which were held in a private university with thirty
participants have been able to prove that if some lesson topics are correctly arranged, they can support a learning language program with certain goals to be achieved. |

The topic studied in this research is about implicature that is as a
tool of meaning submission implicitly in an utterance. This research aims to identify and analyze types of implicature and levels of intended meaning that appear in the dialog of 500 Days of Summer movie. The method of this research is descriptive analysis method. The descriptive analysis method is a method that explains or describes an object research through analyzed data. The source of data used is taken from the dialog of 500 Days of Summer movie, derived from the website.
The results of this research show that there are four types of implicature appear in the dialog of 500 Days of Summer and there are 30 data have been analyzed as implicatures. There are data as generalized conversational implicature, 2 data as scalar implicature, 19 data as particularized conversational implicature, and 8 data as conventional implicature. Besides that, the results show that the implicatures contain intended meanings that have been classified according to the levels of intended meaning. There are 6 data as speaker’s literal meaning, 2 data as speaker’s occasion meaning, 13 data as the hint level, 6 data as the manipulation level, 2 data as the secret deception level, and one utterance as the subconscious or self-deception level. Therefore, it can be concluded that particularized conversational implicature is a dominant
implicature and the hint level as a dominant level of intended meaning that appear in the dialog of 500 Days of Summer movie. |
| Interpersonal Metafunction in Leonardo DiCaprio’s Speech | Author : ASIH PRIHANDINI; ILYAS PERMANA PUTRA | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This study is aimed to analyze mood, modality and personal pronouns as the elements of interpersonal metafunction found in Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech. Metafunction is divided into
three functions of language; interpersonal, ideational, and textual. Interpersonal metafunction is used to be the perspective of this analysis. Method of qualitative by Khasana states that qualitative research studies are designed to obtain information concerning to the current status of phenomena. The aim is to describe what exists with respect to variables or conditions or situations (Khasana, 2010, p. 33). The result of the analysis shows that positive declarative sentences dominate Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech, then “will” as the modality, and “we” as personal pronoun are also dominantly found in the speech. Declarative sentences are dominantly found in the speech since Leonardo tries to share information to the audience. Modality “will” is mostly used since Leonardo wants people concern with the climate change in the future. Personal pronoun “we” shows that Leonardo expects people, including him, will take responsibility of the climate change. |

Pelangi novel (2009), The Rainbow Troops, based on Transitivity. As the unit of analysis, the
data are 30 selected clauses, both uttered by Lintang himself or the narrator. The clauses are
arranged chronologically based on the plot of the story consisting of phase 1 (opening), phase
2 (conflict & climax), and phase 3 (closing). This research employs qualitative descriptive design
(Fraenkel & Wallen, 2007: 430). The approach for this research is narrative inquiry. According to
Croker (Heigham & Croker, 2009: 16), among disciplines using narrative inquiry are anthropology,
sociology, history, psychology and literature. The results show that based on transitivity theory,
the characterizations of Lintang are represented and portrayed by the types of process and
participant in every clause. Among his emerging characterizations are: hyperactive, brave,
never-gives-up kid, heroism, and willing to sacrifice for his family. |
