| Leftism in Republican China: A Historiographical Review | Author : Qian Zhu | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The research explores the historiography of Chinese leftism in the 1910s and 1930s, known as the Republican China, the studies of which was conducted by the Euro-American scholars from the 1980s to the 2000s. Framed under the modernist theory, historians of China in the 1980s investigated the rise and the fall of leftism in Republican China by focusing on state formation, party politics, militarization, as well as the capitalist development of industrialization and urbanization when imperialism, colonialism and global wars had fundamentally changed China’s politics and the state-society relationship. In the 1990s, especially after the PRC’s reform of market economy in the post-Mao era, historical studies of leftism sought for the roots of liberal democracy in the past that led to the political liberalism in the post-socialist China. It was until 2000, that historical research on Chinese leftism eventually departed from the nation-state/party politics and modernization paradigms. Instead, critical research of China’s political and intellectual history has positioned Chinese leftism and leftists into the global history of anti-colonialism, internationalism, and national independent movements in the 20th century. |
| Can they Speak Louder among Men? Women and Leadership Positions in Southwest United Methodist Church, Gainesville/Florida | Author : Felicien Masanga Maisha | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Male social dominance is well documented toward the history of humankind. The male domination draws women in a position of subordination. However, gradually it changed through a long feminist movement activism. Nerveless, in many religious groups and denominations, female subordination is still the rule for several reasons including the (mis)interpretation of the Holy Scriptures and local understanding of male-ness and female-ness that supports the dominance of the first and the subordination of the latter. This study conducted in a small Methodist congregation in Gainesville Florida examined the roles of women and their perceptions regarding the roles they played. Using a fieldwork of six months mixing participant observation and in-depth interviews, the research concluded that in this congregation, there was a culture encouraging the emergence of women leadership. Women were pastors, lay leaders, directors of departments, and chairs of committees. Most of the mentioned positions helped women leadership to develop in this congregation. Finally, it can be noted that this Methodist church is a religious model for female leadership and a source of inspiration to other religious institutions where women are maintained in subordination position using Holy Scriptures. |

| Does Gender Matter in Achievement Emotions? | Author : Shuxin Di | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The current study examines whether gender differences exist in general academic contexts within three achievement emotions domains: prospective outcome emotions, retrospective outcome emotions and activity emotions. One hundred and forty-five undergraduates from a southwest public university participated in the study. Participants were asked to complete twenty-four items assessing their experience of emotions in learning. Discriminant function analysis revealed that gender differences exist statistically and practically in prospective outcome emotions and activity emotions, but not in retrospective outcome emotions. Moreover, female participants scored higher on prospective outcome emotions, retrospective outcome emotions and activity emotions than male participants. This study fills in the gap of prior studies only focusing on investigating gender in selected individual emotions (e.g., anxiety). Future studies may explore if other factors (e.g., culture, age) interact with gender differences in achievement emotions. Since gender matters in achievement emotions, assisting female and male students to develop effective strategies of managing emotions in studying may improve their academic performance. |
| LITERARY IMPACTS OF GOVERNANCE NARRATIVE METAPHORS ON SOCIAL WELL-BEING | Author : Cletus O. OKUGUNI, Roseline Adebimpe ADEWUYI, Chidinma Linda N. OKUGUNI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Narrative and literary-metaphor are literary forms and formats of literature employed by writers in scripting historical archives, mediating structural realities, intervening in socio-cultural contexts and moderating contemporary textual creativity. They are also employed by artistes in translating literary texts and interpreting them into contrived-reality, pseudo-reality and virtual-reality scenarios in our globalised post-modernist world. The intersections of popular democracy and government narrative metaphors amid the resource-curse dilemma, is the focus of this study. Governments globally derive from the people, and narrative literary elements guide the communication and interpretations of policies and determine how the people can be focused on these policies and goals. However, governance narrative elements and its metaphorical intents do not always serve noble purposes for the peoples’ benefits and aspirations for nationhood, but can be altered, adjusted or contrived to serve other nefarious purposes in governance. This paper draws from the assertions of narrative theorists such as Todorov, Propp and Barthes to deliver an assay of the consequences of literary narratives within the context of mixed-metaphors and resource-curse dilemma that impinge upon good governance dynamics in Nigeria and Africa. |

| Guide me so that I can imitate you: Revisiting the Elisabeth Vigee Le Bruns Julie Le Brun Looking in the Mirror | Author : Joana Vitkute | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The article revolves around the Elisabeth Vigee Le Bruns 1787s canvas Julie Le Brun Looking in a Mirror, depicting the artists daughter. The text takes a deeper look at the possible inspirations behind the portraits intriguing composition and tries to find out how the artwork might be responding to the Enlightenments changing conception and depiction of childhood. After presenting the circumstances of the effigys creation and its visual qualities, the attention is drawn to the impossible perspective depicted in the portrait and its plausible ties with the earlier iconographic examples or The Paragone debate. The article also looks into what influences the painter could have experienced from her colleagues, when it came to the changing rendering of children. Finally, the question, how Vigee Le Brun personally, as a mother and as an artist, may have been affected by the new perception of childhood, defined in Jean-Jacques Rousseaus seminal work Emile, and whether it is visible in Julies portrait, is discussed. In this context, Julies portrait gradually emerges as one of Vigee Le Bruns most unique portraits, presumably directly corresponding to the social and artistic novelties of its age by bringing the image of the individual, sensible and enlightened child forward. |

However, metaphysical exposition on inactive agent producing conscious things has become controversial issue. This paper presents the metaphysical concepts in Samkhyakarika |
