Foreign Language Anxiety in Student’s Speaking and Writing Skills | Author : Dede Rohadi Fajri, Siti Hikmah | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This research is focusing on the level of Foreign Language Anxiety that experienced by students. In this research, the researcher was use the Qualitative research as the method in implementing case study. The sources of data were 30 students of the second semester of Banten Jaya University. For collecting data that used in this study include classroom observation, questionnaires and interview. The questionnaire used to obtain specific information data was gathered from the participants by FLCAS of Horwitz et all (1986). From the result of FLCAS questionnaire, there were 10 students who felt very anxious with percentage 33.33%, 8 students felt anxious with the percentage 26.67%, 8 students felt mildly anxious with the percentage 26.67%, 4 students felt relaxed with the percentage 13.33% and there was no student who felt very relaxed. Then, the result of WAT questionnaire were 7 students felt very anxious with percentage 23.33%, 8 students felt anxious with the percentage 26.67%, 9 students felt mildly anxious with the percentage 30%, 6 students felt relaxed with the percentage 20% and there was no student who felt very relaxed. Based on the findings of the present study, several conclusions can be made: First, students’ anxiety in speaking showed that the students never felt quite sure of themselves when they were speaking in foreign language class. Second, students’ anxiety in writing above showed that most of students avoided writing in English. |
| POLITENESS STRATEGIES USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE | Author : Ina Mutmainah | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The objective of this research is to analyze the SpongeBob movie with the title SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water Food Fight. It is to identify the politeness strategies applied by the main characters in SpongeBob Square Pants. The researcher uses qualitative research. The data was taken from Video movie in SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water Food Fight. The result showed that Bald on record strategy is the most frequent strategy (14 out of 42 total data). It is followed by positive politeness strategy (12 out of 42), Off-Record strategy (8 out of 42) and Negative politeness (7 out of 42). This film prefers to apply bald-on record in conveying their utterances to the other, especially Mr. Crabs toward SpongeBob and Patrick as employee in his office. It concludes that there is a good relationship between SpongeBob and Patrick, SpongeBob and Mr. Krab, so the conversation used positive politeness. |

When these factors are well identified, they can be used to determine certain action plans so as to effectively maintain and promote the native language. Applying a qualitative approach, the study was performed by using observation, interview, questionaires, and document study techniques. The data and information obtained were qualitatively analyzed, summarized, and compared to relevant theories and studies to draw conclusion and recommendation. It appears that the internal factors are (1) Continuity of mother tongue transfer, (2) Loyalty to mother tongue, (3) The role of Cikoneng young generation, and (4) Educational and cultural institutions. Whilst, the external factors are (1) Accommodative attitude of Sundanese and Javanese people, (2) Positive attitude of Sundanese and Javanese young generation, (3) Geographical location: Cikoneng as an open society, and (4) The role of Anyer High School. It seems that Banten Government and Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University could play a very important role in order to assure that Cikoneng Lampungese language will be properly maintained. |

The source of the data in this study was status written on social media in this case Facebook. The data collecting technique was content analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that the educational background, the type of work which is owned as well as social institution belonging to the users of the language are very influential in content writing, word choice and writing text in communication. Although, those are not only the usually factors because there were others influenced factors such as psychology, writing style, and others. |
| Improving Student Motivation and Reading Skill by Using Literature Circles | Author : Haeroni Hani, Nurhaedah Gailea | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The objective of this research is to find out the improvement of motivation and reading skill by using literature circles in SMAN 1 Cinangka. The researcher used classroom action research. The sample of this research is students who sit in the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Cinangka with 35 students. There are three cycles which was used by the researcher. In order to improve the motivation and reading skill, literature circles was implemented in four weeks. In the last circle pre-cycle and post cycle were compared. The researcher found that there is significant improving of motivation and reading skill by using literature circles. The first cycle students reading skill improved 42,9%, and the students motivation improved 41,%. The second cycle gradually students reading skill improved 68,6%, and the students motivation improved 80,%. The third cycle students reading skill improved 91,4%, and the students motivation improved 91,4,%. It means that there is significant improvement of motivation and skill which focused on discerning main idea, specific information, understanding the sequence, and inference, in SMAN 1 Cinangka by using literature circles. All these suggest that improving reading motivation and skill by using literature circles is highly encourage. |
| The Effectiveness of Applying Mind Mapping Strategy on Student Speaking Ability | Author : Ida Nuraida | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The Objective of the research are: 1) to know the effectiveness of applying Mind Mapping strategy on student speaking ability. 2) to determine the effectiveness of applying Mind Mapping Strategy to student’ speaking ability 3) to ascertain the effectiveness of applying Mind Mapping Strategy to student’ speaking ability. 4) to know the impact of applying Mind Mapping Strategy to student’ speaking ability. The population of the research was all of the six grades student and the sample was VI B with 40 student as an Experimental Class And VI A with 40 student as a control class. The methodology of the research was quasi-experimental design with the equivalent Control group design, in which the writer provided the pretest and posttest which are given to the experimental Class and Control class. The score was taken from the pretest and posttest which are given on the student belong to experimental class and control class. The average score of pretest of experimental class and are 66.625, and posttest score area 79.625, and also the pretest for control class are 64.750 and the posttest are 74.875. To prove the hypothesis, the writer counted the significance by using t test. Based on the distribution table t 5% significance and of 78, the t table is 0,02 0.05(0.050-0.05), so all the t count in the table is higher than t table. Therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is received. |
| The Effects of Cognitive and Focus on Form Instruction toward Efl Learners’ Achievement of Grammar in Vocational School At SMKN 3 Kota Serang | Author : Cucum Rohmawati, Yudi Juniardi | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The objective of this research is to find out the effect of cognitive and focus on form instruction toward vocational high school EFL learners’ achievement of grammar in vocational school at SMKN 3 Kota Serang. The researcher used quantitative research implementing the true experimental design as research method. There were two groups used in this research, the mainly; the experimental and control group. Sample of this research is students of SMKN 3 Kota Serang, 39 students selected for experimental group, and 38 students selected for control group. The research found that there is significant influence of cognitive and focus on form instruction toward vocational high school EFL learners’ achievement of grammar, it was indicated by the value of t-test higher than the value of t-table (0.950 > 0.000) at the level of significant of a 0.05 and the degree of freedom of 75. It means that the hypothesis was accepted. From those findings, it can be concluded that the use of cognitive and focus on form instruction is effective to influence learners’ achievement of grammar in vocational school at SMKN 3 Kota Serang. All these suggest that the use of cognitive and focus on form instruction in the class of English is highly encouraged. |

In this study, the researchers used qualitative research. The instruments of this study are observation, documentation, questionnaire, and interview. The teachers and students took part in completing questionnaires and interviews for the purpose of study. The final goal of this study is that English teachers have certain theory and strategy in selecting materials that will be brought into classroom. The result of this study showed that the teachers designed the activities in teaching and learning based on curriculum, but most of teachers of Senior High School in Serang City did not use the theories and procedure to select the materials in teching learning process. The result also showed that the students were not interested in reading materials, and understood the reading text easily or they had low motivation in reading. To ovecome this, it needs special training for teachers, and the schools should have literature facility of self-access center. |

This research is a qualitative research through content analysis method. The data in this research was collected through documentation and key informant with expert. In analyzing the data, the researcher used character table by Bohlin’s theory (2013) that consists of moral starting point, 1st morally pivotal point, 2nd morally pivotal point, challenge point, and new change. The result of this research showed there are some moral values in Up and Doctor Strange film that can be used as material for teaching character education involve in curriculum. The moral values are responsibility, caring other people, work hard, appreciate achievement of other people, curiosity, like to read and caring environment. These moral values also include in 18 that should be taught by teacher in teaching character education. |
| EXTROVERSION VERSUS INTROVERSION, INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES, AND READING COMPREHENSION PERFORMANCE IN MULTILINGUAL EFL CLASSROOM | Author : Devi Hellystia | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :This paper tries to investigate if there is any positive correlation between personality types (extrovert and introvert), instructional strategies (cooperative and individual learning), and the success of students’ performance in reading comprehension. This is a pilot study which was conducted in one of secondary school in Indonesia. This research employed experimental research. The subjects were forty students. The finding of this study shows that; (1) the success of students’ performance in reading comprehension which applied cooperative strategy is higher than those applied individual instruction. (2) There are no substantial differences in the success of students’ performance be tween students who have extrovert type of personality and those who have introvert type of personality. (3) There is a positive interaction between instructional strategies and the type of personalities (extrovert and introvert) on the success of students performance in reading comprehension. (4) The success of extrovert type students in their performance on reading comprehension which applied cooperative strategy is higher than those applied individual instruction. (5) The success of introvert type students in their performance on reading comprehension which applied individual Instruction is higher than those applied cooperative instruction. |
| ENGLISH REGISTER USED IN SOCCER COLUMN OF “TOP SKOR” NEWSPAPER | Author : Endah Yuniartiah | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The objectives of mini research done the writer are to describe the linguistic forms of the register used in soccer column of “Top Skor” newspaper and to describe the meaning of register used in soccer column of “Top Skor” newspaper. The writer uses descriptive qualitative in conducting this research. This is due to the fact that the purpose of this research is describing the facts or phenomena systematically and accurately. In this research, the data are taken from ‘Top Skor column. The data of the research are sentences containing the register words and phrases used in soccer column’s language in ‘Top Skor’ newspaper. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method. The ways are searching and collecting the newspapers. The writer analyzes the data by classifying the data which can be categories as the register, analyzing the data by identifying the linguistic form of the words and phrases, analyzing the context of situation of the data, identifying the differences between lexical and contextual meaning, drawing conclusion and suggestion based on the data analysis. The writer found 46 data of word (42 nouns, 2 verbs and 2 adjectives). The percentage is around 64% of the total findings (60% noun, 2.7% verb and 2.7% adjective). The writer finds the high frequency data of register meaning are in contextual meaning. The analysis based on the content of word shows that 55 contextual meaning that covers 78.6% of the total findings. There are 15 lexical meaning that covers 21.4% of the total findings. |

In conducting of the research, the researcher uses the qualitative research. The data are collected from the dialogue on “Anna and the King” movie. The researcher observes the dialogue and writes down the manuscript which uses the form address. The data are collected by doing an observation on “Anna and the King” movie which will be played for several times and then write the data manuscript which are needed in conducting the research. There are some term of address based on Braun theory which are found in “Anna and the King” movie. The term of address are; Firstly, Kinship terms (KT) which shows blood relations and for affine. Secondly, General forms which need not be regarded as particular titles and are in common use. The third, the title is bestowed, achieved by appointment (such as Mr. Prime Minister). Next, the abstract noun which belong to some abstract quality of addressee (such as Your Excellency, Your Honor, Your Grace), words for certain types of relationship (such as colleague, neighbor, friend) and lastly, the forms of address define addresses as father, brother, wife, daughter of someone else by expressing the addressee relation to another person (such as son of teacher). |
